RE: [Avid-L2] OT One for UK fans of the Harding FPA

I'm astonished that the music video for Kanye West's new tune "All of the Lights" made it on air over here, if we'd played that through our harding the report would have been 10,000 pages long, it seems like it was designed to fail on every single criterior the Harding looks for! I've seen it on air though and not even a warning about flashing imagery before it's played. Kind of makes a mockery of the whole system, if that can go on air, why on earth does the BBC reject a few tiny luma flashes? Dr Harding must be laughing his ass off! Here's the link which does include a warning;

Check out All Watched Over By Machines Of Loving Grace ep 1 on the iPlayer if you're in the UK. Watch between 35" and 45" and then tell me that programme got a pass certificate out of the Harding :)

Yes Audio TC database.

I'll have to check the exact version but it's 5.5.

Job;

I understand the principle but can't fathom how it'd work in practice.

Re: [Avid-L2] Audio Timecode only one channel

I'm a bit confused. By 'audio timecode' I generally understand audible timecode recorded onto an audio channel, then deciphered by Read Audio Timecode.

But I'm betting you mean that there is an Audio TC database entry for ch1, but not for ch2 of your source material?

What version of MC are you on?

Is would be done through the Flex-files, AFAIK.
So your clips would all contain data stating the audio source and audio TC.

I would not recommend it as a workflow, though.

[Avid-L2] Audio Timecode only one channel

Good evening Avid-L

Further to my previous e-mail. I'm trying to generate audio EDLs on my
current project. I'm getting audio TC on channel 1 of my audio tracks, but
the avid will not recognise audio timecode on channel 2. When I click one
the "get track info" on my timeline, it will not see any audio timecode for
channel 2 on any of these clips, and EDL manager cannot see a clip name and
defaults time to zero hour code.

Has anyone else seen this?

Regards

Aidan

[Avid-L2] Audio relinking Issue

Dear Avid-L

I'm sure some American clever clog here can solve a issue that's bogging
down bunch of reasonably smart European assistants.

On a feature that was started in the US, and arrived over to Europe, sans
Assistant. I've come across a audio issue.

On a European feature rushes would arrive from the lab, with or without
sound on the digi beta (depending on whether the production wanted sync
dailies ASAP, and were willing to pay the lab to synch rushes)

We then unlink the audio from the digi, load in the locationaudio from
the sound recordist ( on DVD-ROM or drive), and unlink everything but the
mix track.

Then the OMFs or AAFs for the sound department we would give the Sound
department easy access to the multitracks.

In this case this hasn't happened. The audio in the cut is from the digi
beta, and while the Sound Recordist's multitracks have been loaded they are
not linked to the media in the cut.

My editor assures that it is a simple matter for his assistant to give
embedded audio linking to the Bwavs from recordist's source that will
autocoform from the material in the cut, I cannot fathom for the life of me
how to do this.

I also cannot fathom why on earth if this is such a simple matter, why on
earth I (and about a half dozen of even smarter assistants than I) have
bothered our holes going on and synching hours of rushes every day, when we
could have have just done this in the first place.

It's 10pm on a Saturday night in western europe, and I'd love to have a
answer for this by Monday morning our time.

Aidan

PS for those of you about to ask "why don't you just generate audio EDLs?"
There's going to be a follow up e-mail on this topic-

OK, so it looks like a permissions problem with my admin status on the laptop. It works now, but I have to open projects from the folder where they sit, and then it works great. If I change to a new location, I again am locked out till I open a project there.

Weird. Not avid, in house IT to blame for this one I think.

Re: [Avid-L2] Editor Interview

Good stuff.

I was lucky when I started out (as a recording engineer a lifetime or two
ago) to work for a small recording studio that catered to ad agencies and
multi-media production. The owner was a competent, veteran recording
engineer but there were plenty of other good engineers. However, he had
absolutely outstanding client skills. He had his agency clients convinced
that they could not get their sound work done by anyone else - they knew
that whatever happened, he would take care of them.

That's when I learned that it was about more than gear and craft. And in
my years in the business, I have only come across a handful of people who
were true masters of the client relationship. I have tried to learn from
them when I have been lucky enough to find them, and I am still learning.

Thanks for sharing this.

In the message you cited in your first post, it said you were trying to do an "in to out capture." Do you have your in and out marks cleared in the Capture tool? Obviously, if you accidentally set an in and an out point or either one of those, the computer is looking to start capturing at a specific timecode. Double check that you don't have marks set for the capture. That could be the issue.

Both are empty when I hit the record button it'll put the TOD TC in the start field. When it crashes out it clears the field.

are both In and Out fields empty?
If not, clear the fields.
If they are filled in, MC expects 'some' kind of TC to start when the given

I also tried with TC on or off.

Do you have deck control turned off? Look for the button that looks like a
tape deck and turn it off. The TC track doesn't actually matter. Once you
have the deck control off, you still need to assign a "tape name" but that
can just be "DVD." I do this all the time for scratch narration. Deck
control needs to be off. TC can be on (it will just use time of day, IIRC)
