[Avid-L2] Re: AMA link to Avid Compressed .mov shows offline?

Well F me skipping again. You mean I get to play Wheel of Fortune with the Video column. Next time I ama link I want Vanna to show up in my edit bay. Mind you this is not the first time I've wished for that to happen. '-)

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: AMA link to Avid Compressed .mov shows offline?

Had some issues like that in 5.5.3 that seem to be resolved in 6 (so far).
The codec showing up with every other letter skipped. Avid Meridien
Compressed says "A_i_ _e_i_i_n_C_m_r_s_e_" (you fill in the blanks!).
You'll likely also see Apple ProRes 422 as "A_p_e_P_o_e_ _2_". Avid bug,
harmless.

Sometimes Avid 5.5.3 doesn't recognize its own codecs as consolidatable.
Transcode or straight import are the only options then. Haven't seen this
in 6 - my assumption is that it's a codec mismatch between LE/PE/something.
As if the QT was encoded on one and you have the other installed. Most of
the time I go to straight import because I've seen weird artifacts with
transcoding those. Grayish frames on transitions. That hasn't changed going
to 6, so I bet it's codec related.

Re: [Avid-L2] Corrupt music files...STATIC!

I wouldn't suggest just re-wrapping them with a file conversion.

If the files are indeed corrupt as you say then converting them isn't going to take care of the corruption.

Better to delete and reimport

Re: [Avid-L2] Turnaround edit suggestions?

I moonlight in OB trucks at ball games, not as a lead EVS but Replay Only.
I've seen lead EVS ops build the highlight "melt" with very rough ins and
outs on each clip, and begin playing it as soon as we're off the air. They
then make edits as they go - adjusting ins and outs to shorten the
highlights to just the necessary action. All the while, the total time of
the playlist is displayed in the playback monitor. Clips can be added or
deleted as necessary.

Again I'm not a lead operator so I don't know the details of what can be
done in EVS, but it would seem to me keeping it all in EVS would be one
option.

At least the current Adobe Premiere driver "works" with MC 6.0.3. There are a couple glitches but I'm able to run these most of the time.

Yes, agreed about unified drivers. Even with the MC 5.5 drive, having to uninstall and reinstall each time I want to switch between Avid and FCP is a PIA. Partitioning with two different start ups is equally painful. I like the MXO2LE but have found Matrox to lag far behind on the updates. Re: [Avid-L2] Avid 6.5 and MXO2LE

Also, if my discussions with Matrox tech support is any indication, the MXO2 and the MXO2LE are a whole different device than the Mini. That need different drivers to work.

I'm really hoping for some long awaited unified drivers...

If you send an email to Wayne (wandrews[AT]matrox.com) they have a soon to be released driver for MC 6.0/6.5 which improves the user experience a lot. Almost as snappy as Matrox and MC 5.5.
Matrox is rather good at replying to customers and they have a very dedicated team.

[Avid-L2] Mountain Lion compatible Serial-to-USB adaptor recommendation

Can someone recommend a Serial-to-USB adaptor that is compatible with OS X Mountain Lion. I need deck control through Avid Media Composer. Thank you in advance,

Dustyn

Re: [Avid-L2] Avid 6.5 and MXO2LE

Sort of - we just bought a couple of MX02 Minis. The 6.0.3 qualified driver does work well for playback with Mac OS 10.7.5 and MC 6.5 but I don't think all the features are there (the HW/SW switch does not work). Not tried capturing. Also, this Matrox driver only works with Avid. If we wish to monitor from FCP7 on the same machine we have to uninstall one drive and reinstall another. Matrox have apparently said that there will never be a single driver to run MC 6.5 and FCP7 together, whereas the FCP7 driver does work with MC 5.5.

[Avid-L2] Turnaround edit suggestions?

It's a lively and learned discussion here so I'd appreciate how anyone else might approach the following scenario.

-----

live music show starts at 8.45pm for international broadcast - continuous 2 hr+ show

domestic tx delayed start at 9pm with it's own open and 6 x 4'45" breaks to be inserted (with in and out bumpers). Part break timings may change during tx.

Some internal edits to be made for timing / legal as necessary - quite possibly during the tx of the part itself. Live international with credits could finish between 1040 and 11pm, domestic tx off-air must be 1110-1118 pm, so may have to lose time in final parts to land the plane.

1080i HD 5.1 discrete audio

---------

With avid or fcp7 I could edit from airspeed or EVS streams and send back completed parts for playback, or even parts in chunks to be assembled by EVS op. but not with just 15 min turnaround. 25minute would be minimum with any safety, and would prob need 3 avids for 7 parts to stand a chance of making air.

Can it be done with one editor only? Well it did in rehearsal last night, so I'm hoping it works for tx tonight.

What are we using? I'll let you know if it works...

[Avid-L2] Re: Network DNX 145 File Delivery vs XDCam 422 vw Prores?

Whatever the preferred codec I'd do the video mixdown to it in avid. That way you can see what you've done on a proper screen / scope.

Xdcam50hd is better than the lower Dnx IMO, but avcintra100 also supposed to be good.

Noticed yesterday that V6.5 offers prores mxf as mixdown option too... Not sure if that was there before.

[Avid-L2] Network DNX 145 File Delivery vs XDCam 422 vw Prores?

I've found the following requirements from a network file delivery spec:

Format:
Wrapper:
MXF or Quicktime
Video:
XDCAM 4:2:2, DNX 145 OR PRORES 4:2:2
Audio:
LPCM Little Endian, 24-bit, 48kHz (Track Assignments above)
Resolution:
1920x1080 (1080i)
Frame Rate:
29.97
Timecode:
Drop frame

Now in the past I've been able to deliver 1:1 Avid media when the network wanted 2:1.  I'm wondering if they will accept DNX 220x which is what we've done the show in.  That will be up to them.  My preference would be to make a dnx 220x Ref QT and use QTPro to make an .mov for delivery.  If the network won't take the dnx 220x file I'm curious what would be my next best choice quality wise.  I know I can make a reasonable prores file with a QT ref out of Avid without a major gamma shift.  I usually see a slight quadrature error but overall top and bottom levels are good.  So would I be better off making a transcode of the hour show to DNX 145 or export an XDCAM 422 or the ProRes?  My gut likes to stay with Avid media just because I haven't had any gamma issues etc...  kinda like delivering a tape, which we have to do too.  Wondering what others think.  Am I a Luddite to want to stay in some form of Avid media?

[Avid-L2] Re: AMA link to Avid Compressed .mov shows offline?

Well F me skipping. I put the file onto the desktop transfering it from a Unity workspace and it worked. I thought wow must be something in the file path but when I tried to link ama to the file I had originally had issues with it worked too. I have restarted Avid a fewa times since then so that maybe it. Here's the kicker I figured just for edumacation I'd see how long a consolidate would take and it errored out saying check console. Here's the console message:

"The clip BS SHOW NET CUT 2 1120 was skipped during the Consolidate operation because it is of a foreign compression type."

According to QTPro the clip is Avid Meridian compressed but in the Video Column in the bin it says, "Ai eiinCmrse" WTF.

Well I can transcode the clip but it looks like it will take about the same time the import took. I sure see a lot of these Ai or other permutations on file types when I ama to things I know are Avid 1:1 SD .movs. What is the reason behind Ai.... as a format that Avid sees when ama linking through QT. I feel some more googling in my future tonight.
