[Avid-L2] Re: Thank You Editor's Lounge

Between all the discussion of dimension and disparity, inter axial and inter ocular, optical flow and depth mapping etc.... I'm still seeing double and I'm not wearing any 3D glasses. What a fun discussion in Fusion/Dimension Land. Silly me I thought 3D was shot with only 2 cameras but you can add a bunch more in certain instances. Now my head is spinning with perspective depth and a dash of planar tracking with a little Mocha on the side. Fun stuff and I'm really glad someone else get's to do it. ;-)

[Avid-L2] Re: FR - Color correction

Same functionality as Tape based color correction is now. Not something I have used but certainly a reasonable request. Since the functionality of master clip based color correction has been broken since I believe version 4 I can only rely on src clip name which really clamps my color correction workflow because now every time I have to break the relational color correction link for a particular shot I have to rename that shot or resort to Src clip which negates merging any color correction for that shot later. I've recently been informed that the break in master clip based color correction is a result of adding the ability to keyframe color correction. As yet I have never used keyframes in color correction as it's much faster for me to do an add edit and use a dissolve like I always have. Until there are things like keyframable masking which might make them useful to me it is a case of a useless feature breaking what was a powerful feature for some of us. ;-(

Of course, in an instance like a single long shot that takes up the entire card, you'd just do it based on the name and Avid can already do that. So the only time this feature request would really be needed is if someone shot a lot of different shots on the same card and screwed them all up in the same way. Otherwise, for one or two or even a half dozen shots, you might as well use clip names and saved color corrections that you can just drag and drop.

[Avid-L2] Re: 50mbps MPEG into a PDW-F70?

XDCAM HD 50Mb disks are formatted differently from 35/25/18Mb.

An XDCAM HD 50Mb MXF file can't be recorded to a disk that has 35Mb... on it and the other way around.

The Read/Write access of the F70 is also very slow and don't think you'll be happy with it. The U1 is significantly faster.

Keith,

Exactly what I has hoping to get -- straight info from someone's
who's been there and done that! Thank you so much! (And why
didn't I think to call my Sony guy? Doh...)

Well, Bouke, look's like I'll be getting in line for the U2...

Hmm.
Wasn't 35 vbr not 16 bits sound?
So perhaps the unit will do the transfer of the files, but won't be able to
play it back.
(Perhaps over AMA avid can...)

I would try before buy...

[Avid-L2] 50mbps MPEG into a PDW-F70?

I've got a line on a PDW-F70 deck for a very good price.

This older XDCAM HD deck is limited to 35mbps recording through
the HDSDI. But it would seem to me that if I export to device
from the Avid via the deck's FAM/iLink -- sending the deck a data
stream -- it ought to record the Avid's 50mbps output.

Is my thinking right? Has anyone else exported 50mbps data to a
35mbps XDCAM device?

Google has /not/ been my friend on this one :-/

Thanks!

Re: [Avid-L2] FR - Color correction

I definitely get the Symphony "tape" association. That's why I think it's a good idea. Just as with tape, if it's all one clip, you don't really need the "tape" option, since the "name" option will do. And other than that, there are a LOT of tapes that just aren't all the same correction, so for those instances, you don't need it. But for a select number and style of projects, it would be absolutely fantastic.
