Re: [Avid-L2] What is the logic of not installing Sentinel and NitrisDX drivers automatically?

Hi John,

It's just a guess, but in the case of the NitrisDX, it is out of date in AVID's view, and they are treating it like the redheaded stepchild they had with the previous firewire only DNX box.

As far as sentinel driver, there were some permission issues it was causing for a while, and I think they deferred the installer to eliminate some issues while the drivers were getting sorted.

I recall a few versions back that when Apple started locking down 3rd party installers one had to jump through hoops to enable the permission to install them.  Possibly it's now less of a hassle because the folks that make the sentinel drivers got straight with Apple again.  (probably paid some "license fee" to Apple to bless their installers)

I'm trying to understand the logic of not just installing the NitrisDX and Sentinel drivers automatically like it use to be.  Is there some downside to having these installed if you don't have a dongle or a NitrisDX?  On my home system I bounce between the DNxIO and the NitrisDX when I have to bring the DNxIO to a remote job.  So far I haven 't had a problem but I'm just curious as to the reason Avid removed these drivers from the standard Avid Install?

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Mac Vaporizes in Resolve with Avid aaf Nvidia Web Driver?

Last night I did a combo update from Mac OS 10.12.5 to OS 10.12.6 and in the process I got a prompt that it was in fact reverting to the Native OS graphics driver because the current version of the Nvidia driver was not compatible with the new OS.  I think the term they use is system build available in the system report.  So I guess I'm fortunate that my older GTX-680 in the tower works with the native OS GPU driver.

After the prompt I went into system prefs and had the nvidia driver check for updates and updated that.  I also updated the Cuda driver.  I don't really know what effect an out of date Cuda driver would have as I've never done that before.

At least this explains why I found the native OS driver active when I had thought I had selected the web driver when I did my initial updates a year plus ago.  I must have lost the web driver selection along the way and missed any prompts that might have appeared.

So it seems my Resolve is now stable even after updating the video desktop to the latest Avid build that is compatible up to the DNxID.  It seems to work with Avid and Resolve.

Hi,

It is my experience that the system would revert to the native OS gfx driver after an update as well as after a restart following a crash.

After more time the system doesn't seem to be hanging so hopefully I got this sorted out.  Is it possible that as I did Mac OS combo updates along the way that the OS would revert to the native OS graphics card driver without me doing anything.  I like to think that when I went through all the trouble of getting the matching Nvidia driver for the exact system build number that I also set the settings to use the web driver and not the native driver but I can't be sure.  So many ways to shoot myself in the foot.

I'm cross posting this to edit list and Avid L-2.  This is more Resolve  Mac related but I'm testing an Avid round trip type workflow.

About a year ago I finally installed my Cyclone Microsystems Expansion Chassis on my home MacPro mid 2012 12 core 2.66Ghz, 64GB Ram, GTX-680 GPU in tower.  I have two Titan X GPUs in the Expansion Chassis.  I know Avid won't take much advantage of them but I figured they would be a big plus for Resolve.

Initially I was running OS 10.9.5 or maybe 10.10.5 IIRC.  When I installed the expansion chassis I found that the Titan X GPUs showed up as some sort of generic without the correct GPU name.  Some of this seems to be related to the expansion chassis.  Even in Resolve IIRC the GPUs were recognized in a generic form.

At that point I think I went through the process of getting the proper Nvidia driver for the mac OS build.  Once I did that IIRC the Titan X GPUs started being listed by their correct name.  I was also informed during this process that multiple GPUs could only work properly in OS Sierra 10.12.X.  I upgraded the OS to where I'm at now of 10.12.5.  I know I should get up to 10.12.6 for proper Avid spec but I haven't bothered as yet.

Part of the reason I decided to go expansion chassis was running the GTX-680 and trying to run 4096x2160 DCI in Resolve tests the computer would vaporize randomly.  I got prompts about not enough GPU Vram.  When I say vaporize I mean just that.  System would hang and no opt, cmd, esc would get me to force quit and cursor locked etc...

Today a year or so later I'm finally trying to do a 4K test with my current project and it is still vaporizing every 10 minutes or so.  It seems to happen when I right click but I don't have any pattern.  As I was about to try a clean install on another drive I decided to check the Nvidia driver to see if it was up to date.  To my surprise I found that the Nvidia setting window showed that it was using the native OX X Default Graphics Driver.  I switched that setting to NVidea Web driver and checked for updates.  It said I was up to date.  So far it hasn't vaporized as I poke around and do a bunch of right clicks.

I'm guessing that because I downloaded the proper Nvidia drive last year that made the Titan X cards be recognized properly as far as their name but it would seem that because I wasn't running the Nvidia Web driver  set in the Nvidia Driver Manager there might have been a glitch that was causing the vaporizing in Resolve.  Does anyone know if Mac OS 10.12.5 has a TitanX compatibility in it's OS X Default Graphics Driver?  If it does is it possible that that native OS driver isn't what Resolve likes and the the Web Driver should be used?  I'm going to do more research on this but so far it seems more stable on the web driver and not the OS driver.  This makes sense to me but it is only a guess as I'm very new to the Resolve ecosystem.  Vaporizing doesn't help build my confidence but then I learn more from failure than success.

Re: [Avid-L2] OT: Need photo database/DAM suggestion for big photo library

I would strongly suggest NOT to buy anything, but use open source tools available.

You need to hire a coder anyways to deploy a site / do cloud storage, so why not use what is freely available and will never get you into a hostage situation as it is open source?
(Eg, everyone who has worked with SoundMiner knows how hard it is to find anything outside the SM world. (And no, the abbreviation is not a coincidence.))

If you have lightroom touched files, they contain XMP metadata. That is a good start.
XMP allows for custom metadata fields along the pre-defined. (Dublin core being one simple example)
Now, next step is to fill a database..
Examining a gazillion files, extracting the existing metadata, create a jpg thumbnail and placing the whole shebang in an open source (mySQL) database is quite easy.
A decent web developer should be able to make a front end to search such a database.

Then you have to make a decision if you want to store all possible downloadable files, or generate (low res / alternative quality / watermarked) copies on request. (Using ImageMagic or alike.)
And of course you have to make a decision how to store. Raw is nice, but big and most of the time huge overkill.
(This morning I made a 6.3 MB TIFF file into a 43 KB PNG without any loss. That is 130 times smaller, and still uncompressed, but granted that was a simple CGI..)

And you have to decide if you want all storage in the cloud, or just your database and thumbnails / previews. (Think about cost of space, but also safety. Everything WILL be hacked, and you MUST have a local backup anyways.)

So far it is all easy and cheap, and can (and should!) be done without any form of paid / licensed software. (With cheap I mean only cost for coders to make it happen to your liking.)

The biggest challenge is to improve the quality of the database so stuff will actually get found.
But that is a totally different discussion.

Sorry for the OT post but I'm banging my head against the wall on this one.

My company has been using Lightroom to organize stills for our clients, but there are a bunch of limitations that are killing us.

Mainly - Lightroom isn't really designed for server based, multi-user access. With the growing number of photos and the increasing number of people that need to access them, we are hurting to come up with a good solution.

We want to cloud-host multiple Terabytes of RAW photos and be able to download multiple formats depending on use and permissions.

I know the stock photo houses have this type of thing down, but we're not at the enterprise level of service (yet).

Can anyone here point me in the right direction?

Thanks

ResourceSpace, Software

It's free and relatively easy to deploy.

I have struggled finding a good solution to that problem as well. Frankly, we still rely primarily on MacOS itself which is pretty deft with images. Unlike video, stills should not require specialized storage, but most of us want an application that is adept at both stills and video. So far none of the video solutions I've looked at handle stills particularly well. (I have not looked a EditShare for this purpose)

I can recommend Neofinder for cataloging everything. Because Neofinder creates thumbnails and is location agnostic, it is a great solution for archiving and retrieval, but Neofinder does not actively process files. It's just a great media catalog.

I am intrigued by MediaVault from DBi (www.digitalbcast.com) which I just saw at a show, simply because I liked the basic interface and it appeared to handle stills as deftly as it handles video. According to the sales rep, the development team is heavy on photographers and they have clients that use MediaVault primarily for stills.

This was a superficial review so I'm not endorsing. Just suggesting. If anyone else has an opinion on MediaVault, I'd love to hear. I also did not price it. ;)

Cheers,
