Re: [Avid-L2] Sony PVM OLED 24P flicker fixed

Agreed. I think the way to go is rec709 primaries, 2.4 gamma. Hoping that the ITU 1886 standard where they standardized 2.4 as a display gamma will help with standardizing this.

One problem (among others) is that as far as I can tell, most home plasmas and LCDS have a gamma closer to 2.2, and even THX seems to spec a gamma of 2.2 for THX certified displays. Also, more and more people are viewing content on various sRGB displays like laptop screens, ipads, iphones, etc.

Although trying to take those devices into account will make you insane, it does seem like it makes the move to standardize gamma at 2.4 a little questionable when all those devices are sRGB which has a gamma of 2.2

Yuck.

p.s.
have you put your OLED next to a plasma or CRT and shot both with a probe, and compared them visually? I'm very curious for someone to do this, and see if their results match what I saw with the OLED and DLP projector.

When put side by side with a 3chip DLP projector and calibrated to the same primaries and white point with a PR655 (and confirmed with a i1d3 probe) the OLED views as far too green. Apparently this has to do with the spectral distribution of the light emitted by the OLED.

The Sony just paid for itself, at least as far as my eyes are concerned. My wife might feel differently. Oh well she just got a new car so I needed a new gadget. ;-)

Yeah, the writing is not awesome. They exaggerate slightly too in some
ways, but it's a pretty good outline of our process.

Re: [Avid-L2] XDCAM EX AMA Weirdness

Good thinking on the volume label. It wasn't especially odd, but didn't try
changing it.

The card folder structure was definitely intact and AMA plugin loaded, btw.

[Avid-L2] Audio problems with Mbox2 and Blackmagic card on same Avid

I'm trying to help someone with their system, but unfortunately don't
have too many details. They are running MC 6.0.1 on a Mac tower, OS
10.7.3 (not yet officially supported, I know.)

They are unable to get audio output from Avid through an Mbox2 on a
system that has a Blackmagic card installed. Other applications are
able to use the MBox OK. I'm guessing the blackmagic card has
commandeered the audio output from Avid. Audio Project hardware
settings point to the blackmagic card, and video input and output
settings open the Blackmagic system panel.

Is there a simple way to tell Avid to ignore the Blackmagic card? I
guess they could uninstall the Blackmagic Video Desktop, but I'm
wondering if there's an easier way to disable and enable it.

Thanks,
--Michael

Re: [Avid-L2] XDCAM EX AMA Weirdness

Yep this sounds like the issue you are having.

Treat folder structure like you would a Avid bin name and path - keep it
short, simple and no unusual characters.

Re: [Avid-L2] XDCAM EX AMA Weirdness

Dylan,

One thing that you don't mention is checking the names in the complete path
(volume name/disc name/folders). Any time I have issues like the one you're
having where AMA linking seems to work but doesn't, the cause is invariably
the folder names. They have some character or something that Avid doesn't
like. When you move the structure to another place and it's able to link,
it's because the naming in that path is free of weirdness.

Re: [Avid-L2] XDCAM EX AMA Weirdness

you can check the directory structure with Sony XDCAM Transfer and rebuild the structure database files with Sony XDCAM EX Clip Browser. I use those to check stuff when I've done finder level file management of EX footage.

Did you try a 'known good' disc? I'm guessing the AMA plugin isn't loaded.

Re: [Avid-L2] Shooting specs

A world that so alien to us in the sane PAL world.... :)

It would seem to me that the most obvious different between the video
people are used to and the 24P look they seek is the P part of it. The
extra 5.97 frames per second hardly counts for much - especially given the
way our eyes play tricks on us.

Re: [Avid-L2] media composer 6 trim bug

I had trim problems on Mac in 6.0 but they are fixed in 6.0.1. I checked just now - all OK. I don't suppose your loop values are set to zero? Are you on a Mac? did this work in 6.0? Have you done the usual (new project, new user, trash MCState?). There were/maybe are trim issues on some Macs (not all) with 6.

[Avid-L2] XDCAM EX AMA Weirdness

I got a call from the assistant on a job I've been doing some freelance
consulting for, she was totally unable to get Media Composer 5.5 to AMA
link to a whole shoot's worth of XDCAM EX clips.

Over the phone I verified that the file structure seemed to be correct and
other basic things. No luck.

I went in this evening and tested a few things out - I was totally unable
to get the clips to link in Avid either. Even weirder was that I received
no error message as you usually do when linking fails. It also didn't pop
up the bin naming dialog.

We verified the files were fine by using the Sony XDCAM Browser. We upgrade
the AMA plugin to the latest version. We completely reinstalled the AMA
plugin. We disabled AMA then re-enabled it. We sucessfully AMA linked EX
clips from the same cameras on an earlier shoot.

I turned on all AMA logging in the console (AMA_SetLoggingLevel 0xff) and
there was absolutely nothing. We'd try "Link to AMA Volume" navigate the
the right place, and then nothing - we were back in Media Composer as if
nothing happened.

Eventually I tried copying a whole card from the drive it was on to another
drive. It worked fine.

I checked all the permissions on the drive, I verified I could read and
write files on that drive and in the EX folders (I deleted the TAKR folder
and XML files and had the XDCAM Broswer recreate them - no problems).

No idea what it going on but we're now moving 790GB of EX media from one
drive to another in the hope that it will just somehow work on that drive.

You may try to enable "Render on the fly" in the trim settings.
