Re: [Avid-L2] OT: Good source for learning more about codecs and exporting.

Focal Press had a book or two if I recall.

[Avid-L2] Re: Odd Bin disappearing after closing after consolidation?

No shared storage. My macpro came with 10.8.2 but by the time I purchased the OS 10.8.X upgrade so I could upgrade my existing 10.6.8 startup drive the App store was selling 10.8.3. Is there a way to still get a full tilt bootable 10.82 version? As it is I had to go through the Lion Disk Maker site and ended up doing the manual proceedure they suggest to make a full tilt bootable USB drive of th 10.8.3 downloaded installer.

Re: [Avid-L2] OT: Good source for learning more about codecs and exporting.

Compression for Great Video and Audio: Master Tips and Common Sense (DV Expert) by Ben Waggoner. This is from 2009 so it's a bit dated, but there is a lot of info that will be of use. I would only use these kinds of guides as references rather than trying to read the whole thing.

Even if you don't use more full featured software like Episode Pro, manuals will often explain the ins and outs of many of the settings within complex codecs like H.264.

The compression-L is useful, though there is very little traffic on it currently. But folks will still answer your questions: http://www.media-motion.tv/Compression-list.html

[Avid-L2] Re: The state of the competition

Uh, that was meant in sort of a colloquial way. Though I guess you could say it was "good" when it came out... but now it's very "old".

What's a good source of info for learning more about codecs and settings? I seem to only find the two extremes, first books that say basically "choose the right settings and hit the go button" or else deep theory about the codecs that go way further into it than I need or care to go.

Any good guides come to mind?

Re: [Avid-L2] Drive Recommendations

For a fast, cheap, reliable solution, get an empty SATA drive enclosure:

http://www.datoptic.com/four-hot-swap-sataiii-6gb-enclosure.html

Fill it with drives. I've been using Hitachi drives for years (now a
division of Western Digital, marketed as HGST) and I buy from B&H, but
YMMV. Dunno whether you have sufficient motherboard SATA ports (in
which case you'll just need a rear-panel connector bracket and some
internal SATA cables) or if you'll need a port multiplier, but either
way is cheap.

Props to electropura12 who posted about this last year on the list - thanks!

We'd need at least 12TB of storage fast enough to edit with. Our main system is a MacPro with 3 empty slots running MC6.5. (but no thunderbolt port). It would be ideal to have a 12TB unit that was somewhat portable as we may be splitting up the work between editors in different locations. Also, the media is already backed-up onto numerous 3.5" drives at least twice, so we don't think this new system needs to be concerned with media redundancy.

[Avid-L2] Odd Bin disappearing after closing after consolidation?

Resource forks have been deprecated for a long time. Apple wants file
extensions and discourages developers from using them. They are supposed
to still work, though...so perhaps avid or OSX is corrupting them after
consolidate.

Are you on shared storage?
10.8.3 is not approved by Avid, however, the only problems with it I have
heard of involve shared storage.

[Avid-L2] Drive Recommendations

This topic frequently gets discussed, but as tech rapidly changes, I was wondering if any of you would like to offer an up-to-date recommendation.

We have about 12TB of footage - mostly ProResHQ - from a feature length doc ("The Anonymous People") we just finished. There are many additional shorter stories we plan edit for web and other uses that didn't make it into the feature.

For the feature we offlined at DNx36 and then relinked back to the full rez material for finishing. This allowed us to use the internal drives bays of the MacPro for about everything. For final grading we consolidated and moved media via a FW drive over to a Symphony with its own CalDigit drives at another location.

Now, we'd like to get a better drive solution that allows us to cut these other stories at full resolution without all the media management.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
