Re: [Avid-L2] Avid Dongle on Apple Silicon (M1 + derivates)

problems remembering my phone number let alone my Avid license code
With Avid Link, I haven't needed to know mine. I may have had to copy/paste it from an email into the activation box once, but after that no brain power is required.

Another plus for SW licensing vs dongles, is that it's much harder for a SW license to grow legs and/or end up in someone's pocket, which is why facilities have likely adopted SW licensing so readily.

Every bit of software or service that I use now is SW based licensing, from BorisFX to Disney+. It's not as scary as you might think.

I'm no programmer but if Pan and Zoom was written over a weekend, as legend has it, how long would it take to write a dongle driver?  That seems like a pretty rudimentary bit of code to my uneducated in coding brain.
It could be a question of need : motivation. Writing the code for Pan and Zoom was something that was filling a need for a majority at the time. Writing code for a dongle driver will only benefit a small percentage of end users, and there's testing, support, etc involved after the fact. I could also rebuild the fuel injectors in my car in a weekend, but do I want to? No. I also couldn't tell you the last time I've used Avid Pan and Zoom as there are better options available now. Pan and Zoom may have reportedly been written in a weekend, but it hasn't been updated in 10 yrs at least.

You might have meant the late Hal Douglas, perhaps more famously known for "In a world…"

Especially this one:

I knew and worked with Hal frequently - a genuinely nice guy. I also worked with Don a few times, let's just say I liked Hal a lot.

I haven't had too many issues with Adobe Licensing so I'm sure I can survive without a dongle but I like my Sapphire, Resolve and still working Avid dongles.  Cue the late Don Lafontaine, "In a world without dongles..."  ;-0

It sounds like perhaps this another reason to look to a PC vs. a Mac in the future.

If I was to guess and this is my take based on 18 years of supporting them… it is a small #, maybe 15-20% and that's generous. All enterprise has moved on for the most part – while a bunch of rentals still have dongles - it is generally only individuals such as yourself that use them.  Revenue streams are part of it….. you are saying we should invest a lot of money into dongle compatibility so a small percentage of users can use them on Monterey.   They work fine on Win and BigSur and lower. It's a small niche and yes it is the right call to trump it and use that $ for other functionality and features… cloud licensing was one and we have other projects in the kitty being worked on that make the dongle a thing of the past.  When ready to discuss that I will….

Re: [Avid-L2] Avid Dongle on Apple Silicon (M1 + derivates)

Welcome, Sentinel. Take yourself out of business.

I mean, honestly: if Sentinel is not delivering a valid USB i/o support on M1(+ <- all future Apple Silicon) - where will your business model end up then?

This is ridiculous.

Or, on the other hand: this is an excuse to push prepetuals rather than dongles. And, as stated before: iLok could be an alternative if "any" company pull itself out of Dongle-business (no, we don't do M1+)

Avid did overhaul the licensing system, so it is now much, much easier and should be more reliable to assign and move licenses.

This lack of a driver seems too convenient to force even more people into a software license.  I know the business model is better for annual subscriptions that guarantee a continuous stream of revenue but it can't be that difficult to come up with an updated driver.  My Resolve dongle continues to work without the need for any driver that I'm aware of. Insert Heston's line, "I'll give you my dongle when you take it from my cold, dead startup drive.”  ;-)

I have three startup drives that usually come from incremental updates.  If I clone a working startup drive to another startup volume on the same mac computer will they both work without having to do a license dance?  This is why I've always preferred dongles.

Given that Avid are trying to move everyone over to subscription-based licensing, I think you know the answer to your question.

Background

Avid-L was established in 1994 at Calvin College by Steven Koster.

It was created to be a forum for Avid users to meet, discuss, and share

information.

Avid-L quickly grew into the premiere on-line users group for

professional film and video editors. It was one of the earliest examples

of an Internet community, allowing hundreds of editors worldwide to

share their experiences and expertise with their peers. There was no

better place for a professional Avid editor to get such wealth of

informed professional advice.

At various times, individual subscribers volunteered services to the

group. Searchable archives were maintained by Germany's Berlin Users

Group as well as the UIUC. A tips & tricks list was posted by Andy

Birkhead of Innovative Edit. Wes Plate, a longtime contributor, not only

shared key techniques on his Web site, he also created a photo gallery

for members' portraits.

In 1997, several subscribers began a tradition of meeting in person at

the NAB trade show in Las Vegas. The first gatherings were organized by Jaime Fowler. In 1999,

Avid Technology itself began sponsoring these gatherings as an exclusive reception and seminar for Avid-L members only.  In 2002, this changed to the "Avid Users Group" meeting.

By 1999, Avid-L boasted over 1600 subscribers, exhibiting a true

international scope with over 300  international members. The community

included participants from a wide variety of well-known corporate

organizations in broadcasting, technical, and content creation fields,

as well as and  multiple local TV stations, colleges, and universities.

In 2000, Avid-L joined AvidProNet.com, and then, in 2002, was integrated

Into Avid.com.

In 2005 Due to problems with signal to noise ratio and abusive posters, the Avid-L2 was formed. A year later the Avid-L was discontinued by Avid.

At the middle of 2006, the L2 has around 1100 members, with plenty of "lurker only" members who simply use the web version of the list.  The L2 is spam-free, by moderation and with Groups.io’s tools and will remain that way.

In 2019,  the Group has migrated to Groups,io from the previous Yahoo engine-   the Groups.io page  maintains the complete Avid-L2 archive.    The original Avid-L archive has been lost to the history of the interwebz.

Welcome, and Enjoy!
