Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Failure to Launch -

Howdy-

Since you said you did a clean install this is a puzzle. Normally when this
happens to me, it¹s because someone has installed a third party sound or
screen capture app. Peek at the settings in the Sound preference pane and
double check that there is nothing unusual installed. The most notorious is
Soundflower.

Other than that, try installing an older version of MC. I¹d try 5.5.1 first,
and if that won¹t work, 5.0.9 or whatever is the last of the 5.0.x series. I
consider it a risky practice going back and forth between versions, but I
have a client that does it fairly often with no issues yet.

[Avid-L2] Don't get burned on digital cut tip. Sony deck aborts edit but Avid marches on.

I know better than this but almost got burned on an HDCam output.  Fortunately while spot checking the tape found that the first 3 plus minutes of the output were out of sync by 8 seconds.  I had done pickup insert edits starting from 3 plus minutes on and all those sections were fine.  Why were the first 3 minutes out?  I had to reember that Avid doesn't care if the record machine actually goes into record and it rolls the timeline even if the record machine aborted the edit.  The Sony machines will recue and make the edit again on their own and unless you are watching the output of the record machine you might not notice.  The nine seconds ish off in sync was the 2nd preoll and reedit time.  Because my main monitor was showing the avid output I didn't see anything odd.  I feed the black magic ultrascope with the record machine's output but I just missed this glitch.  I really wish Avid would acknowledge the record machine strobe that tells it
the machine actually went into record.  The signal use to and probably still exists in the RS-422 stream.  On the ISC/GVG/editware you could enable whether or not the editor listened for record confirmation.  This would be something easy to fix Avid.  I was lucky I caught it.  I do know better but bouncing around in the freelance world I don't always have all the monitoring options I would like.  Hope this saves or reminds others of this potential glitch.

Was able to buy a copy of Snow Leopard from MacMall in Santa Monica, installed 10.6.3, upgraded to 10.6.6 - and am still getting the same error message - can't intialize audio hardware? What audio hardware? Some speakers I have plugged into the headphone jack? I've tried restarting, still get the error message. I've posted to the Avid Forum, but any advice welcome. As I said there, I've got a client coming over tomorrow with a project started in 5.5 and I've got to be able to open it. - Thanks.

Re: [Avid-L2] Avid bin too full...

Sounds like it's the number of items, as it requested I remove exactly 153!
I now believe the limit is 1000 items.

Do you have any other audio software installed? That can be a problem because they're both fighting for the audio card, I believe.

Is it based on number of items,
or the total size of the bin?

Years ago, on an old MC 5.5 system,
I overstuffed a bin to the point I couldn't open it
unless I moved it to another Avid with more RAM.

Now, I try to keep my bin size limited.
Once burned, as they say.

I think the suggested number of items in a bin is 75 to a 100.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: MC v5.5.2 MAC Production Suite: Is "Avid DVD" Windows-Only?

That's where my money is- Hardware 'abstraction' coming with 6.

Why won't your nehalem work with lion? I thought everything from harpertown on would run 64 bit.

I have a Kona 3 and io express running on the same CPU- but I'm guessing you're out of slots. Second graphics card is a great idea! Also, and I'm sure you noticed this- avid can use the serial port on the k3- you don't need an additional keyspan.

Pretty sure making 720 into 480 is in the format tab of a 720 project... But I'm not at a machine right now.

[Avid-L2] Re: MC v5.5.2 MAC Production Suite: Is "Avid DVD" Windows-Only?

Thanks, Greg.

My "Nehalem" has an AJA Kona3 + BOB attached. It was acquired (and
still is) as an FCP/FCS system as barter for a project I completed
earlier this year. It runs that hardware/software configuration on the
primary disk/partition running OSX 10.6.8. MC v5.5.2 is on a secondary
disk/partiton running OSX v10.6.7.

My hope is Avid/AJA will announce support for the Kona3 on Media
Composer *prior* to the release of v6.x. If not, I may have to swap the
Kona3 for the I/O Express (or other viable solution).

It was suggested in the "Avid: Live to Edit" thread on the L that the
Kona3 may not be supported until v6. That suggestion did *not* come
from an Avid employee, and I know Avid employees under NDA right now.
Since I see valid reasons for adding support now or forcing current
users and recent cross-graders to upgrade to v6.x for it, I'll not
speculate myself.

My video cards and CPUs are slow by today's benchmarks. I'll work
within my means for now and see how the expanded third-party situation
susses itself out before adding or swapping hardware. Besides, the
next release will likely be engineered and optimized for OSX "Lion."
This would mean moving away from the "Nehalem" to a newer MacPro
(Westmere, et al) tower to meet the new Avid requirements, yes?

Cheers!

Jess

[Avid-L2] Re: MC v5.5.2 MAC Production Suite: Is "Avid DVD" Windows-Only?

Yes, John.

The DVI signal for the third monitor comes from the primary video
display card, an nVidia GeForce GT-120 (OEM version). There are two
such cards installed, each with DVI Out. I suppose I could run a fourth
monitor if I really wanted or needed one.

The only HD project I've created on this system thus far is a 720p/59.94
project. When in this project, the MOJO's output "goes green" (full
static green screen) as soon as any video is accessed for playback.
Audio still passes through normally. The Video Output Tab does NOT
allow me to switch the output (downconvert) from the project's native
settings. I assumed this is due to hardware/firmware limitations of the
MOJO, and decided full-screen playback on monitor three would
circumvent the issue (hence the face-palm moment).

Happily, the full-screen playback option offers a better viewing
experience than down-converted SD though the MOJO. However, if you can
offer any insight into the Video Tab situation I'd appreciate it. I
likely missed something simple.

Legacy SD projects work fine with the MOJO. If/when switching to one I
can always plug the MOJO back in for firewire I/O when necessary. I
still own my Sony DSR-20 and Canon XL-1. I'm "old-school," baby!

Re: [Avid-L2] Avid bin too full...

I get it with titles on occasion. Especially when a project gets moved around from one editor to another and titles have to be recreated constantly.

[Avid-L2] Avid bin too full...

Has anyone ever seen a bin too full?
I actually had a bin tonight that had too many items.
Avid would not save unless I removed some.
Who knew?
