Agreed on all points.
However, Avid is known for "announcing" at NAB -- and "delivering" in June. If W8 drops in late 2011 or very early 2012 -- how far away from that timeline are we?
Furthermore, were I responsible for the Windows dev of MC v.6 -- I'd have to think good and hard about developing for W7 -- knowing full-well that thousands (or tens of thousands) of hours of labor would be staring me in the face just 6-12 months later -- in order to transition to W8.
No matter how you cut it -- that's a tough position to be in.

Re: [Avid-L2] Windows 8 Conjecture
Based on Avid's track record, you are probably not going to see W8
support for about 6 months after the official retail release.
I am just hoping that MC 6 is much better threaded, 64 bit and a lot of
performance tweaks (AMA, waveform redraw, continuous play mode, etc.).
Windows 7 has been MS best OS to date IMHO.
And not really excited to have GUI similar to their mobile OS :/

I'd like to throw my hat in on a somewhat related topic.
In the year 2011 -- why does repeatedly pressing the delete key in Media Composer -- end up backspacing over one's text. I mean, I think Apple solved this issue a long time ago.

[Avid-L2] Windows 8 Conjecture
I was just reading some articles about the projected release date for Windows 8 -- and how it represents a sea-change "under-the-hood" departure from previous Windows architectures (and supposedly for the better).
And I wondered, is MC v.6 for Windows being written for W7 -- or W8?
And, how could it even be written for W8? I mean, it's not been released -- nor has it been even qualified as being a stable OS platform for this application.
And if it's being written for W7 -- how long will it take -- and how much effort will it take -- to port it, once again, for a radically different W8 environment?
Mind you, I'm not advocating a mass conversion to an untested OS -- especially one that represents a such a big departure from the past. But if W8's new architecture ends up leaving the previous OS versions in the dust -- how long might we be stuck on W7?
Just thinking out loud.
[Avid-L2] Re: 31 character limit - even twitter allows 140
I hear ya, and I do use folders but when the shoot days break 100 (current project is up to 120) even that doesn't help. I like to have bin names that start out specific (person interviewed, or shoot date) and then be able to add a few reminders of what's in there, but in 31 characters my abbreviations become silly.
It's easy to break matchframe/find bin when you're autosyncing clips, often the wrong bin will open.
Anyway, I still would like more than 31.

I find the app GrandPerspective is very helpful in figuring out what's bloating your hard drive in the first place. Great visual tool.

[Avid-L2] Best High Quality Preset in Squeeze?
Im looking to archive some videos at the highest quality possible so that I can come back to them at a later time if I have to and compress them.
What are some good presets to use?

I might also suggest:
1- DUPE your sequence
2- Do an Audio Mix Down
3- Cut the Mixdown into the sequence
4- Lift out the Unmixed audio tracks
5- Then output to Squeeze

Re: [Avid-L2] Bloated boot drive
Check ALL the user's HOME section. This is the primary offender of
bloated drives. Avid Attic, FCP documents, Downloads, iTunes library,
etc by default are located here for EACH user. So make sure you log-on
to each user to sort through these folders.
