[Avid-L2] Re: How to access GPU usage on MacPro Mid 2012?

Pretty sure the GPU history came in with High Sierra.

[Avid-L2] IMF Photon QC in Resolve requires Jave Runtime Environment?

I found that Resolve supports Photon QC if the jave run time is installed. Can anyone think of any reason installing Java runtime would be a bad thing?:

Performing Photon validation on IMF packages
DaVinci Resolve Studio now supports validation of IMF packages using Photon. In order to activate this feature, the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) will need to be installed on the machine.

Photon validation can be performed by right clicking on IMF packages in the Media Pool and selecting "Perform Photon Validation". Additionally, there is a checkbox in the Deliver page advanced video settings to perform Photon validation after the IMF package is rendered.

[Avid-L2] Re: Sharing some of my experience with Netflix IMF Test

I should have added that I took all the Assets into Avid first to sync and line things up as that's my home field.  I then AAF'd into Resolve to make the IMF.

[Avid-L2] Sharing some of my experience with Netflix IMF Test

Mark S has been very helpful as I sort out the Netflix IMF SDR onboarding.  I thought sharing my experience might help others.

I just wanted to share some experience I'm having with Netflix IMF creation that I didn't pick up in class.

I'm going through the Onboarding process for Netflix SDR IMF creation and I found some gotchas in the supplemental package creation.

The first thing is in order to take an existing IMF and insert patch fixes the first thing to do is select the IMF clip in the media pool and right click and select Create New Timeline Using Composition Playlist.  The new sequence now has an XML box icon at the front of it's name in the media pool.  Then when you go to the deliver page the "supplemental package" checkbox will appear.  If you just create a timeline from the IMF clicking Create New Timline using Selected Clips you won't get the option for Supplemental Package in the delivery page.

An additional frustration/curiosity/chance for a learning experience ;-) is that I first just made a sequence using the IMF but didn't choose Using Composition Playlist.  Of course the subsequent sequence did not offer the supplemental package checkbox.  But then when I remade the sequence using the correct choice of Using Composition Playlist I still did not see the Supplemental Package checkbox in the delivery page.  I bounced around the interface and checked to make sure the use Easy DCP in the preferences configuration tab was not checked as I googled and read that if that is checked on the supplemental package option won't be available in delivery page.  The Easy DCP wasn't check so that wasn't the problem.

Finally after quitting Resolve and restarting I got the Supplemental Package checkbox to appear in delivery page.  I don't really know what happened or what changed but I'm guessing perhaps because I originally created a sequence without choosing to create using composition playlist that even after I deleted that incorrect sequence and created a new sequence with the correct choice to use content playlist perhaps Resolve was somehow still tracking the new sequence as if it was the original incorrect sequence.  As I said I deleted the original bad sequence but still I've seen software like QTPro 7 make similar mistakes until it was quit and restarted.  I'm just guessing but it's possible that's what was confusing me.

I've found that quite often various aspect of the Resolve GUI don't seem to update when I click on something but when I switch to a different tab and go back the change is in fact displayed.  I can't put my finger on exactly when this happens but throughout my classes I would scratch my head trying to keep up with the class and not be able to change something then voila I bounce around the GUI and come back and the change is there.  It really makes it tough when learning the new platform but it's been pointed out this is what makes it fun.  ;-)

[Avid-L2] How to access GPU usage on MacPro Mid 2012?

I'm testing IMF export in Resolve 15_4 from an Avid AAF.  I'm wondering how to access how much Resolve is hitting my two TitanX GPUs in a cyclone microsystems expansion chassis.  I google and found there is supposedly a GPU history in Acitivity monitor available in the Activity Monitor View Menu.  It says cmd + 4 will open the window or under view menu.  I don't see it as a choice and the keyboard shortcut doesn't bring up anything on my mid 2012 macpro OS 10.12.6.  I also don't see it on an older iMac with OS 10.12.6.  What am I missing.  Is this not available in Sierra OS?

I have the Resolve set to not use the GUI GPU for processing, which is a GTX-680 in the tower but to use the two TitanX GPUs in the expansion chassis.  I was told on this list by Bogdan that Resolve will use the minimum Vram of all GPUs so I eliminated the GTX-680 which only has 2GB vram so that hopefully then Resolve would take advantage of the 12GB vram on the two TitanX GPUs.

I'm getting approx 7 to 8 frames a second processing UHD DPX to IMF with 5.1 and 2.0 audio tracks.  My source drive is also the destination drive so I know that will slow things up.  I will try the same to a different drive next.

My main question is why can't I find this so called GPU history tab/window in activity monitor?

RE: [Avid-L2] Avoiding burnt in subtitles (IMF?)

With IMF you can create supplemental files, so you make as a UK version with subtitles burnt in and then do supplemental packages for other languages and also for textless if you want. Or any combo because basically you are making alternate versions of just the changed elements.

So that's the clever IMF thing.. especially if you do Dolby Vision.. One master version that you can use to play as HDR or SDR and various int versions all in one file.

Although I'm not actually sure that for example Netflix are taking textless in this way at the moment.

Subject: [Avid-L2] Avoiding burnt in subtitles (IMF?)

Normally when delivering a doc (usually UK, sometimes AS11, with international variations) we burn in the English language subtitles and provide textless elements at end or seperate clean show.

Now we are delivering UHD and HD that is 4 masters to wrangle.

Seems like we should try to migrate to a sidecar file for the subtitles, so I'm interested to know how that is working for folks in the real world. And is this something made easier with IMF?

How do you review the resultant file? eg is there a play this version of IMF with subtitles?

Also how to control subtitle sizing so that the sizing is correct (4:3 safe, over 1 or 2 lines, reposition to avoid areas of screen etc)?

Thanks fo any pointers
Thanks for any info
