Re: [Avid-L2] Anybody using the LG OLED Pro 32inch

[Edited Message Follows]

Recently a place I worked at for a long time bought a used Sony X310, it only had 27 hours on it according to the calibration technician, but she could only get 877 nits even with the white patch down to 5%.  It was the first X310 she had calibrated and she thought it might be a limit of the panel.  I recall the ECinema monitors would have to be very selective of the backlight elements they used to make sure they were bright enough.  IIRC many of the same back light elements didn't have the output necessary so they couldn't be used in their displays.  I wonder if there is a similar variance with the X310 Sony LEDs.  For 20K I'd expect to get the full 1000 nits especially on a 5% patch.  I realize the difference between 877 and 1000 nits isn't much to the human eye but 20K sure is a difference to my pocket book.  Oh wait I just googled and B&H is listing the X310 at $29K.  Wow I guess that's another victim of the supply chain.

None of these will do peak brightness on a full screen higher than around 200 nits. Is it even necessary for most mastering? They will hit above 800 nits for a 10% window, which I think is more than adequate for a non-reference HDR monitor.

By C2 I assume you mean the larger LG OLEDs.  I have a 55 inch C9 that's been calibrated for SDR and HDR with the Calman software.  I got some info that this OLED Pro 32inch is 400 nits but can be tweaked for more and it does talk to a Calman software/probe.  My C9 speced out at over 700 nits on the calibration report.  I'll have to look into the Alienware 32 inch just so I'm more aware of what's out there.

Now there you go being logical.  I'm thinking the new feature is the special, "Parents don't know anything" macro key.

To be serious my feeling is the same as yours that Excel is such a standard workhorse the basics, which is what she is learning, are not going to be different.

[Avid-L2] MC 2022.4 "EssentialResourceNotAvailableError" leads to failure of the editing application to open

Chased my tail for a short while during a fresh install of MC 2022.4 on a new Dell 7760.  I've been on MC 8.10 forever so the process was a learning experience.

After what appeared to be a successful installation MC refused to open and presented an "EssentialResourceNotAvailableError" with the only option to QUIT.  Uninstalled and reinstalled a few times with no change.

A little online digging lead me to the solution of uninstalling MC and then unchecking "NDI Support" when that option was presented during a new installation.  Looks like it really isn't an option after all.

So far all is good.

Thanks for the input.  After a brief google it seems the iPad Pro is more like phone IOS so it doesn't seem like a good fit as you said.  I keep hearing how great the iPad Pro is for confirmation review of HDR H_265 files.  Not critical QC but for decent confirmation.  I may just go full tile macbook pro again and not sweat the details.  Any other suggestions would be welcome.

Re: [Avid-L2] Mac Book Air vs. IPad Pro?

Don't get the iPad. It doesn't work the same as a laptop in Office apps. Odd things like copy and paste behave differently and functionality in Excel is just not there.
Get the MacBook Air. The battery life is unfriggingbelievable. You can do light editing on it. I have a MacBook 14. It's great but the battery life is less than half the MacBook Air.

I started freelancing at a place and bay swapping is the norm.  It's time for a new laptop/Pad.  I see the IPad pro has a keyboard, I hate touch screen.  My old 2009 MacBook Pro 17 inch won't boot so I'm limping along with an old mac book but it's unreliable.

I'm not looking for a super robust workhorse but mostly emails and possibly light duty work in Adobe or Avid.  Does the IPad Pro even work like a laptop?  Is it conceivable to run Avid on a Mac Book Air?  I'm just starting to look and I need it somewhat small and agile but it would be great to be able to do small Avid work like opening bins to check things or manipulate them.

I suppose I could just update to the latest MacBook Pro 16 inch but I'm trying to weigh my options.  Any suggestions welcome.  I'm just not much of a PC guy these days but I do know I could get more bang for the buck going PC.

Re: [Avid-L2] 2021.12.2 vs 2022.4 for fresh install

Hi Karl,
I am on Mac and 2022.4 so I don't now how relevant. It has been stable for the week I have been on it. There is some weird behavior with group clips that are 4k sources in a HD project. I believe it is a bug. That is the only problem I have encountered so far.

Re: [Avid-L2] Avid MC 2019.12.5 Floating Panels vs. Bins opening in Active Bin? Titler+ Promoting

Many systems are maintained at a certain level because it works well for them.  Why change to a newer version if the application is working well for you?  That seems to be the point of view at ABC, where I'm working weekends.  They're on an older version and it's solid and reliable.

Development of MC is a constant focus on the next release, not in going back and bolstering old ones.  So by running 2019, the facility is missing out on three years of fixes and actual feature changes -- as I'm sure you can imagine.  The two things this is most apparent on is how bins and tools work, and in the titling apps.

That being said, I came from the PBS system, and know all about being forced onto a specific version.  No worries there.  I often cheated... I was not allowed to upgrade the Win10-based MC that was attached to the ISIS 5500 we had, but I was totally allowed to upgrade the MC I had installed on my email computer.  So I ported a lot of workflow over to it... and... don't tell anyone... but also connected the main Avid's ethernet cable to my email computer when nobody was looking ;)

Re: [Avid-L2] Avid MC 2019.12.5 Floating Panels vs. Bins opening in Active Bin? Titler+ Promoting

Yes, I did hear that Titler+ has been improved somewhat in the latest versions so that it is workable, but I remember trying to use it on some 2019 version of Avid and it was pretty much unusable!

Since you're stuck with the current version of Avid and you don't want to run through the Marquee/title tool hoops, the only thing I could suggest is using the titling tools within something like Boris Continuum. I think it's called 3D objects and you can create some very fancy titles! If it's a budget problem with buying the plugin outright, - you can rent monthly for about $60.

Because you are on PC you should be able to use old AVID Titler or Marquee. It's only on Mac that the older 32 bit apps can't run.

I'm finally working at a place that has gone past MC 2018.X.  I'm on Avid MC 2019.12.X  on a PC.

I generally hit the float all panels under workspaces menu but it seems whenever I open a new bin from the project window it opens as a new tab in an existing active bin.  Is there a setting that will make it open in it's on window.  I can drag it out of the bin and it is it's own window then but I want to emulate the behavior I've always had.  Is this possible.

Also the Hide/Show Sidebar options seem to be inconsistent and often greyed out.  I found if the bin is too narrow that effect the ability to show the sidebar but it often seems random why the three sidebar related menu items are functional or not.  Can someone shed some light on the Spirit of how these controls are supposed to work?

Bonus is they are having to use Titler+.  I promoted one title and it came up with the text but totally positioned wrong but 3 others came up blank.  I know Titler+ is iffy but to not even bring up the text at all is maddening.  Upgrading is not an option as this is a big facility and I have no control over that.  If anyone has found the be all of tutorials on Titler+ I'd appreciate the link.
