Re: [Avid-L2] MC 2021.12 on a new MacBook Pro Max 2021

[Edited Message Follows]

If the only option now is to link an transcode that makes me wonder if what I've experienced in the past will now happen all the time.  When I've linked and transcoded and the source .movs are still available I've had Avid randomly relink to an ama link when the media has been linked and transcoded.  I've had to move the location of the original source files to avoid this happening.  I'd get things that would just unrender or suddenly I couldn't export a QT Ref because the sequence had reverted to some ama linking without me asking it to do that.  The traditional import was a solid way around that issue, perhaps less elegant but at least consistent.  I'm wondering how that will work moving forward.

Background

Avid-L was established in 1994 at Calvin College by Steven Koster.

It was created to be a forum for Avid users to meet, discuss, and share

information.

Avid-L quickly grew into the premiere on-line users group for

professional film and video editors. It was one of the earliest examples

of an Internet community, allowing hundreds of editors worldwide to

share their experiences and expertise with their peers. There was no

better place for a professional Avid editor to get such wealth of

informed professional advice.

At various times, individual subscribers volunteered services to the

group. Searchable archives were maintained by Germany's Berlin Users

Group as well as the UIUC. A tips & tricks list was posted by Andy

Birkhead of Innovative Edit. Wes Plate, a longtime contributor, not only

shared key techniques on his Web site, he also created a photo gallery

for members' portraits.

In 1997, several subscribers began a tradition of meeting in person at

the NAB trade show in Las Vegas. The first gatherings were organized by Jaime Fowler. In 1999,

Avid Technology itself began sponsoring these gatherings as an exclusive reception and seminar for Avid-L members only.  In 2002, this changed to the "Avid Users Group" meeting.

By 1999, Avid-L boasted over 1600 subscribers, exhibiting a true

international scope with over 300  international members. The community

included participants from a wide variety of well-known corporate

organizations in broadcasting, technical, and content creation fields,

as well as and  multiple local TV stations, colleges, and universities.

In 2000, Avid-L joined AvidProNet.com, and then, in 2002, was integrated

Into Avid.com.

In 2005 Due to problems with signal to noise ratio and abusive posters, the Avid-L2 was formed. A year later the Avid-L was discontinued by Avid.

At the middle of 2006, the L2 has around 1100 members, with plenty of "lurker only" members who simply use the web version of the list.  The L2 is spam-free, by moderation and with Groups.io’s tools and will remain that way.

In 2019,  the Group has migrated to Groups,io from the previous Yahoo engine-   the Groups.io page  maintains the complete Avid-L2 archive.    The original Avid-L archive has been lost to the history of the interwebz.

Welcome, and Enjoy!

Extras!

Re: [Avid-L2] MC 2021.12 on a new MacBook Pro Max 2021

Don't you have alpha linking options in the link settings? I believe that's the last place I saw them, and they should be the same as you used for importing (ignore, as-is, invert).

Brief update. It does seem I can import jpegs and png files; mp3 audio can be linked via the Source Browser and then transcoded. ProRes .mov files can also be linked via the source browser (or option-dragging) and then transcoded. So the only sticking point is bringing in a ProRes 4444 .mov file with the alpha channel correct. That and the inability to fully quit.

Perhaps there's a different format that will work if the alpha needs to be inverted on import.

Re: [Avid-L2] MC 2021.12 on a new MacBook Pro Max 2021

Thanks, Jay. I knew the old Quicktime was no longer supported, but I was assuming that Avid had a workaround now that Monterey and M1 Macs are supported. And it's weird that I can't import jpg or png stills, or mp3 audio files. Those didn't depend on Quicktime, did they?

I wish that Avid Support could give me a definitive answer. I'm being told to try things that take time, but is it pointless? There's nothing in the support documents about no longer being able to import files with an alpha channel. I know it works in 2021.12, because the Support guy tried it last night with one of my files. This morning I asked him if he was on an M1 Mac or running Monterey, but didn't get a response. I have a feeling he's in the Eastern part of the world, because he only replies after 6:00 pm my time in the NY area. - Mark

Re: [Avid-L2] MC 2021.12 on a new MacBook Pro Max 2021

That import feature is for users like me that are still on Mojave, but are upgrading from 2018 finally.  Mojave still supports QuickTime, where I don't think that Monterey does.  Not sure though since I haven't touched Monterey yet.

I'm not positive, because I do not yet have a M1 computer and have no plans to upgrade to Monterey anytime soon, BUT… my understanding is that 'Import' of files like .mov was support through QuickTime.  And since Apple ended QuickTime that you can't import those files anymore.  So you have to link and transcode them now.  I have absolutely no idea how that works with alpha channels.  I would be interested in knowing if you figure it out.  Maybe you have to take them trough Resolve or After Effects and output as something better supported under Monterey.

My understanding is that 2021.12 is supported on an M1 Mac running Monterey (according to the Knowledge Base as of Dec. 17, 2021). Good timing, because an M1 Max MacBook Pro that I ordered in November arrived last week. This week I tried to make some minor client-feedback changes involving graphics on a roughcut from a week earlier. Two issues: 1) The Input>Import Media function seems to be broken for most media formats; 2) Media Composer will not finish quitting, so I have to force-quit after it has saved the project and bins.

I was able to option-drag a new .mov graphic (ProRes 422) into a bin and then transcode it. However, several animated titles needed to be composited; they were ProRes 4444 with alpha. Option-dragging them into a bin created clips with the alpha reversed.  My settings are for "invert on import" but it's not working because I can't import. Testing things, I found I could import WAV and AIFF audio files, but no video or still files (mp4, mov, png, etc.). I can't select import options because I can't import.

I have a support ticket open, but it's not going well. (I'll spare you the details.) This morning I tried a few things, checking at each step to see whether I cured anything: 1) created a new Avid user; 2) uninstalled then reinstalled 2021.12; created a new Admin user on the MacBook Pro 2021, then created a new project with new user settings. No joy. Still have the same issues: can't import, can't quit.

Has anyone had success with Media Composer on a new MacBook Pro 2021? TIA -- Mark Block (Oh, and Happy New Year!)
