Re: [Avid-L2] Avid offering free 90 day subscriptions so folks can work from home.

The computer that is running the app needs the license.
Once you VPN, what app are you using to control the host system?

MS Remote Desktop does not work well.

When things started going pandemic last week, I thought back to an old consumer box that I had for remote working with clients, and considered digging it out from the attic.

The unit was called Slingbox, and it would take a video/audio feed from your Avid and stream it to whoever you gave the login details to.  Sadly, it looks like it's been abandoned.  But ten years ago when I last used it, it was pretty useable, albeit with a five or six second delay.

Best wishes,

Chris

Re: [Avid-L2] Avid offering free 90 day subscriptions so folks can work from home.

If you can start a remote session under VNC and get Media Composer running then switch to RDP that works.  RDP sessions will not see the Sentinel Driver . Of course you can always start a trial license and work that way. The other option is to use the HP RGS software and Media Composer will start up under that and be licensed via the dongle too. The performance is way better than VNC or RDP as well

Re: [Avid-L2] Avid offering free 90 day subscriptions so folks can work from home.

The Skype screen-sharing options work well for this, depending on your connection. If you're working a dual-monitor setup, you can turn off your hardware display and send MC into full-screen mode, with your output on one monitor and your timeline in the other monitor. Screen-share the output monitor and you're good to go.

Theoretically you can also use NDI Tools. In that case, make sure you installed the NDI tools when you installed MC. When you run Skype, NDI should be one of the source banks for the screen-sharing options. I say theoretically because I tried it a few years back and couldn't get it to work. But I haven't tried it recently.

If you're on Windows and need to use multiple audio sources with Skype, try the Voicemeeter virtual audio mixer. I've found it very useful.

There are times when I need to work with the director, trying things in real time as if we were together, so I'd like to be able to show him my monitor output. TeamViewer doesn't send sound, so that's out. I could skype/facetime and point the camera at the monitor, but it's not ideal even with a pretty good internet connexion. Any suggestions?

Teamviewer does send sound for me.  If your avid is sending sound out to a board, you have to disable that to have it run in software mode.  Then it'll send sound.  It's a button above the timeline in most setups.

The most 'old school' option would be to run OBS on another machine, feed your Avid output to the other machine and stream to Youtube.
Ok, will set you back a BM recorder and another stupid CPU, but it'll work (with a bit of delay.)

Will also help freelancers who don't own their own or rent licenses convince their clients not to postpone their projects...since they can now edit them at home.

This isn't my present situation, but if this occurred a few years ago it would have been very helpful.

Haven't seen the Cyan screen of death.  My titles are very simple text cards and nothing involving any of the preset effects or animation other than an occasional fade up or fade out that sometimes has a drop shadow on the text.  It just went unrendered after I opened a different project and then opened the sequence bin from the original project I had rendered the safe color upper track.  Now I have rendered the New Blue effect and also the safe color.  I'm thinking because the New Blue App launches automatically when you park on an unrendered New Blue Effect that the process of it relaunching the Titler Pro App/Program makes New Blue recreate the title finding the font etc... and this probably sends a message to the upper track that it's new media therefore the safe color unrenders.  At least that's what it is acting like.

Tonight with multiple sequences I find I render a safe color over a new blue then go to another project and in that project open up the sequence I just rendered the safe color over the new blue title and it's now unrendered.  Now I render the new blue title underneath the safe color and I'll see if the safe color render sticks.  Nothing changed I just went to another project and opened the sequence from the previous project.  This happen on all three project sequences I'm working and all are in separate bins.  It's like new blue has to recreate itself everytime a new project is opened even if nothing has changed except the project.  I did not quit the new blue program that runs when you start using new blue in Avid.  Very troubling.

Re: [Avid-L2] Whither NAB?

Bouke, from what I read the elderly are more vulnerable, but this is not an old people only disease, and I do not believe that people can die based on age, or race, religion, sexual orientation, for that matter. The kids seem to rarely develop the infection, but still carry the virus, this is why closing the schools is very important: the kids bring the virus home and spread it around. Other than that, and very simply put, there are two approaches: 1) saving the economy, misleading the people talking about herd immunity, or 2) saving lifes, trying to limit the damage. Saving both is not an option. Option 1 will cause a lot of deaths, option 2 will cost a lot of money. You don't have to take my word for this, I could provide unconvenient links in italian, but if You spare some time on Google You will certainly find food for thought in the language of Your choice, since it is pretty clear that You don't find toilet rolls because the media are doing their job: providing You with information, it's not their fault if some people are morons and buy more goods than they need.

Regards, Luca

Re: [Avid-L2] Whither NAB?

The virus is going to spread.  The world is beyond being able to stop it.  In the US we have limited resources in our medical care system.  Limited beds, limited testing, limited medics, limited personal, limited masks, etc.  If the spread is fast and unchecked it will easily overwhelm our medical care system.  Thus putting more people at risk of receiving no medial attention at all when just a little could be beneficial to them.  The measures taking place, while much of it seems like knee-jerk over reaction, is hopefully going to slow the rate of spread so that our medical system doesn't get overwhelmed.

A comparison you may be able to relate to is the lack of TP.  Everyone decided to go to the store at the same time, so now all the TP is gone.  They system couldn't handle the demand and was overwhelmed.  Now you can't get TP.  If everyone had just gone to the store when they needed TP and just bought the amount needed then there would be plenty to go around.

So yes, CV is here and it will spread and we can't stop that.  But we can try and slow the rate of spread to have a overall minimal impact.  But as humans we will probably fail at that.

Hi Luca,

Since you're in the middle of it, I take it you follow it more closely than I do. Perhaps you have some answers:
As fas as I know, it's not deadly perse (most people survive it, with or without symptoms), but mainly morality rate is high with elderly.
(Unlike the Spanish flu, that strangely enough took the most healthy group. (Granted, at that time that group was mostly in the army, underfed and worn out.)

Now, for this to blow over, everyone has to get resistant.
That means either getting a (not yet existing) vaccin, or getting infected and survive it.

Or, what am I missing here?

(Oh, my points about the media making things worse instead of better still stands. I can't buy toilet paper anymore, without any valid reason.)

@ Bouke, this is not flu, it is a deadly virus spreading very fast. This is a fact, it's not the media. Everyone is entitled to her/his own opinion, but not all opinions are sensible, nor sensitive. I'm glad You don't claim to be right, and I beg to differ. The World Health Organization questioned the herd immunity approach by the way, the scientist in You can Google for some readings with normal capitalisation from reliable sources.

@ John, I feel your pain. Since an upgrade to COVID-20 is in the pipeline I'm saving my mother in law for betatesting prior the release.

You have NOTHING to apologize for, Luca.

John,
Do you get the CYAN SCREEN OF DEATH?

Or are the Plug-Ins just going GREEN DOT unrendered for you?
