[Avid-L2] Re: OT: Grass Valley 110 switcher tally lights

Can you believe that you have to find the manual on Ebay? I was surprised perusing the GVG sight how little effort is being put into info on old equipment. I know their product line has moved on but these are the guys I use to call at 7:00 pm Sunday night when I'd perhaps overstepped my technical limits and buggered up something and I'd get a call back from some tech who was on call. Has Thompson's reign really F'd up support for legacy equipment. I recall sending in a Thompson Digibeta for warranty service and it took them 6 weeks to get the machine back. It was a Sony with the Thompson moniker. They even wanted us to ship it to Neveda so they would then ship it back to Burbank for repair and back to Neveda and then back to us and we were in Burbank. I think we were able to avoid the shipping nonsence but 6 weeks was really long. Oh well time marches on with the race to the bottom.

I actually talked to one the other night and he sees this as a good thing. He is thinking of using them to add Smoke editing stations. He said a lot of commercial offline work wants all the comps and fixes done in the offline since clients have no imagination anymore. And this would be a good solution to that.

Thanks.

Basically, I can either go for something like that or for a Matrox
DualHead2Go, which will span two monitors as one display, or use an USB
solution, or use an extra GFX card.

As for the latter, it remains unclear to me whether the remaining 16x PCIe
slot in my XW8400, which is 4x electrical, will allow me to run a second
NVIDIA card or not.

One thing we have not heard in this discussion (at least here) is the thoughts of current Autoscreet shops that paid full cash for their smoke suites. I wonder if they see folks like Marc and McSmoke as an asset to be used or competition that will drive down rates and erode their client base. I imagine the client experience on a McSmoke will be "different" from a full-on system, so what does that do to the rate structure?

[Avid-L2] Re: Additional video card

That's what I do on the Machine I use at the moment : MacPro with a second gfx card (same as first) which drives a 42" LCD monitor plugged with a DVi-HDMi adapter. The third screen (Full Screen Display) is not aligned with the others so that my mouse doesn't wander there too often. On each reboot, the window setup stays the same with no problem.

Back to the subject of your question and since your setup isn't Mac anyway, maybe this gizmo might do the trick:
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/VIDU2DVIA/

OWC ships to Europe, I bought quite a few things from them.

[Avid-L2] Re: OT: Grass Valley 110 switcher tally lights

Much to my dismay the GVG website didn't seem to or I couldn't find the manual. They seem to have passed of most of the old switchers to outside vendors for support. Not very Grass Valley like from my past experience. Here's the 100/110 support link they provide:
Our Service Partner, Effective Engineering in Burbank, CA provides long-term support for this product. Please contact them at 818-841-4437 or at gvgservice@effeng.com

[Avid-L2] Re: Why scale values disappear from JPEG

What he said.

To elaborate a bit. The two choices are DV25 (720x480) and ITU601 (720x486) - you want the ITU601 setting. If you import a graphic that is 486 pixels in height into a DV25 project it will be scaled to 480 in height. On the other hand if you import a graphic that is 480 in height into a ITU601 project, say 1:1 or some other resolution that supports the 486 image raster height, it will be scaled to 486. However, if the General Settings Effect Aperture for NTSC setting is set for DV25 then anything that gets rendered, like a dissolve, will be cropped to 480 in height during the rendered portion. This is fine in a DV25 project but causes the behavior you are experiencing in a ITU601 project.

That's just a long way of saying change the setting ;-) I leave mine set for ITU601 all of the time even when doing DV25 work and haven't seen any negative results from that practice. Anyone know of a reason to ever set it for DV25? If not, perhaps that setting shouldn't even exist.

[Avid-L2] OT: Grass Valley 110 switcher tally lights

Of all the message boards that I frequent, THIS ONE is the most likely to have an answer to this question. I help out a local non-profit with their studio shoots and recently their old Echolab switcher gave up the ghost. Fortunately they received a donation of an old Grass Valley 110 switcher just in time. Unfortunately it came without a manual and I'm having no luck in sorting out how to hook up the tally lights to the Sony camera control units. The Sony's want a contact closure to light up and while I see a group of pins on the back of the Grass Valley labeled Tally I'm not measuring a voltage or a contact closure from any of the pins labeled 1-8 and the pin labeled ground.

Anyone here have experience with the Grass Valley 110 switcher and can you shed any light on what I should do to make this work? Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.

[Avid-L2] Why scale values disappear from JPEG

DV 16:9 sequence: I have two pictures imported as JPEG - one is thin rectangle, both use "rescale" to fill frame in timeline. With a transition between them (doesn't matter what transition), I see a black line top and bottom ONLY during that transition.

I remember the answer was something trivial - but what am I missing? (my L2 search with seemingly incorrect keywords revealed nothing)

Exactly the same as NDF versus DF. Both read 1 hour in timecode value, but NDF AND 23.98 are longer in actual running time, because numbers aren't drop to adjust for slow video time.

In reality, true 24fps (not 23.98) WOULD correspond to actual time. An hour of TC in TRUE 24fps would be accurate because the video is running faster.

Oh come on Tony. A really good tracker will spice up any marriage! That and a lively conversation about SCH and you are set.

P.s. Just kidding about the SCH my wife makes me leave the room when I bring it up.

[Avid-L2] Re: Additional video card

Where I'm at they are all Macs and run with 3/4 monitors and two video cards. I'm told they rarely have the monitors switch around. Usually if one of the monitors is unplugged they system gets confused but for the most part I'm told the systems are very stable as far as monitor configuration. Just wanted to share this to the thread.

[Avid-L2] Re: Additional video card

Glad to be of assistance.

Two minor issues that I failed to sufficiently clarify in that post:

1. When I indicated that I have given-up on the 3-monitor approach (largely because I run non-Avid applications on my third monitor) -- I failed to mention that I accomplish that goal by completely disabling my secondary nVidia FX1800 graphics card outputs in Windows Display settings. When I am finished editing -- I reinstate those heads for "productivity" applications.

2. This may be obvious, but if you do go down this road, you will want your third (and maybe forth) displays to be running in the exact same screen resolution in Windows as your primary displays -- not because it is a necessity -- but because the screen mapping can make mousing back and forth a real PIA if the screens are not aligned.

Again, good luck.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Smoke on Mac Update

funny, i think we're all on the same page, at least the general public is. Excitement.

Smoke is out on the mac, and available at a price point that makes most of us look up and pay attention. Autodesk is doing what Avid should have done 3 yrs ago when they came out with the software version of DS. They're making it attractable/attainable to people who otherwise wouldn't be able to..

They're marketing this as a product they're proud of. Avid still brushes DS under the carpet. Look at all the info on the web for the last 2 months about Smoke.. they built up the hype, and got everyone excited, and they didn't fail on the delivery. at least not in the demo Terry and I, and a whole room full of other editors, saw.
when was the last time you felt excited about anything avid did?

And the argument about building your business on a platform, and having that be the reason you survive or fail is about the worst argument for or against a product i can think of. remembering of course, Smoke for the last yr has been cheaper than a DS. (At least for the Smoke HD version, not the 2k-4k Advanced version. ) now they're about the same. That;s like a Symphony Editor blaming his tools, instead of his/her lack of knowledge about how to do something.

ok. i'm off. trying to learn Smoke.. and use DS. and learn Lustre, and Nuke, and Fusion, and anything else that makes me more attractive as a freelance editor/Colorist/vfx artist. (no pun intended!)

[Avid-L2] Re: Protools and MC 4.x tiny bug.

You may find some AVid services or processes are still running after you quit MC.
Start the computer up from cold and let it settle down for 10 mins or so. Don;t start MC or PT. Make a not of the processes running (screen grab maybe)
The start MC and do a little work then quit MC. Wait a minute or so and then see what processes are running. Any that weren't in the first list try manually ending the process. When they are all closed off try running PT. at the end of PT again check what processes may have been left running and quit them before re-starting MC.
Worth a shot. If it works out it may even be possible to make a little batch file to run that does the work for you.

[Avid-L2] Re: Additional video card

I've had a fair amount of experience with this over the years. I ran MC with 4 monitors using high-end AGP and PCI cards -- and I do it now with 3 monitors on my z800 with an FX4800 and FX1800 cards (as they use the exact same nVidia driver).

While it is nice to have 3 or 4 monitors worth of "real estate" -- be prepared for the very real possibility of having to manually (and repeatedly) move your Source/Record and Timeline windows to the correct monitors every time you launch the application (regardless of your Workspace setting). The extent of this will be highly dependent on your preferred MC screen layout configuration -- as well as how your screens are numerically ordered in Windows' Display Settings -- and which monitor is your primary (Main) screen. There's a fair amount of trial and error involved in achieving the best possible result -- but some amount of compromise on your part will most likely be involved.

Additionally, while it is nice to have a different applications like an email client, Photoshop, Squeeze, Word or [fill in the blank] running on the third (or the third and fourth) monitors -- there is a nagging problem with Avid dialog boxes and status windows that spawn themselves in the background of applications running on those screens (screens that MC is not actual running) -- and therefore are invisible to the editor -- and some of them are important. I have discussed this with Avid a number of times and there seems to be no apparent resolution.

This, of course, may not be an issue for you -- as your post seems to imply that all monitors will be running and displaying MC -- but it's good to know this reality before you sink too much money on the extra card and monitor.

As for myself, I have largely given up on the 3-monitor approach -- unless I'm cutting a project that requires it. I currently run MC on screens 1 and 2 (from left to right) -- and run Black Magic Design's UltraScope on monitor 3.

Whatever you do -- you want to make sure that the second card you install is capable of using the exact same nVidia driver as your primary card. It's not that it can't work otherwise -- it's just that you don't want to invite yourself to a party or endless troubleshooting and disappointing performance.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Protools and MC 4.x tiny bug.

They won't run simultaneously... but, once they started working
together, they used to run... sequentially... but it's still better
than having two CPUs... but I could do without the reboots.

RE: [Avid-L2] Re: Protools and MC 4.x tiny bug.

Yes, Avid specifically states that you can install them on the same machine,
but cannot run them simultaneously. This is a massive improvement over the
not-so-far past.

To my knowledge, Avid only maintains you can install these on the same
machine without crashing, not that they'll actually run together. Not like
FCP and STP ;-)

Exactly the same as NDF versus DF. Both read 1 hour in timecode value, but NDF AND 23.98 are longer in actual running time, because numbers aren't drop to adjust for slow video time.

In reality, true 24fps (not 23.98) WOULD correspond to actual time. An hour of TC in TRUE 24fps would be accurate because the video is running faster.

[Avid-L2] Protools and MC 4.x tiny bug.

Mac, MC 4.x, Protools LE 8.01, and Mojo. Anyone else got this combo?

It's awesome to be able to run both apps on the same CPU, but whenever
I got to Avid (to, say, capture sound or add sound back and output
picture and sound together) then shut down and go back to PT, PT hangs
during startup. A reboot solves it.

A pretty minor complaint... any one else seeing this? I'm assuming it
has to do with the software getting a 'hold' of the Mojo.

Yes, I recently discovered the 'non-stop' timeline problem.

Easy enough for me to uninstall and find these older drivers?
