Re: [Avid-L2] Cinedeck workflows & Wiredrive at the next Editors' Lounge

I assume given you recorded a switch feed that there was a switcher involved in the production.  Did you feed the Cinedecks through the switchers aux busses?  Was this done in a full tilt production truck environment and did you have to have them rent the cinedeck units for your shoot?  Did anyone record bars and tone?  ;-)

I used Cinedeck MX recorders (for the first time) shooting a live multi-camera event last November, for a 3 hour prime-time ballroom dancing show for PBS, airing in April.  I loved the Cinedecks, which performed flawlessly, and which were the starting point for the most streamlined post workflow I've ever seen.

I had zero problems with the Cinedecks, so I'm curious to hear why you express reservations - have they let you down on a job, or have you avoided them because they lack some feature you need?

Here are a few of the reasons for my praise of the Cinedecks:

* They easily record multiple simultaneous streams onto cheap industry-standard hard drive arrays - no need for expensive proprietary drives with limited capacity.

* They run all evening - I recorded 5 iso'd cameras plus a switched line feed, on multiple nights of performances, for 5 hours straight without a pause.  And it sure does simplify media management when your camera originals are 300 minutes long!

* They record DNxHD MXF OP-Atom files.  Avid can directly see and edit the camera original files without importing, transcoding, consolidating or AMA'ing.  It's "real" Avid media.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: New Sony Plug-in v3.40 for XAVC/XDCAM

Drastic Technologies is working on a version of the Media Reactor AMA Plug-in that will only support a single format for $99. XAVC-s is one of the first formats. If interested please contact James at Drastic.

[Avid-L2] FR: Project window height

I was glad to see that my desire for a bigger opening Project window when you first launch Avid was finally recognized in the latest release. The only thing when you launch is this window, so it could be the full size of the screen, but the old Project Launch window didn't even let you see the full length of your project names.

With that out of the way, let's go the opposite direction with the Project Window itself. WHY WHY WHY - in this age of people cutting on laptops with limited screen real estate - can you not shrink the size of the Project window vertically past a certain point? I've only got two bins in this current project and yet the Project window can't be shrunk to a space smaller than 12 bins.

I'm assuming it's because of the Format Tab.

While I'm looking at the Format Tab, when did they add the Mask Margins button in the Format Tab? I've never seen that and could have used it on my last project. You learn something new every day.

[Avid-L2] Re: Multiple 3rd Party IO Devices Installed

The production company I've been working at has four edit systems that have to support both MC8 and FCP7 (with Premiere Pro once in a blue moon). Last week I was doing a Media Composer job, and it was crashing constantly -- I couldn't make more than a few edits without Avid crashing to the Desktop or hanging up with a beachball.

The system was using an AJA box, but Blackmagic drivers had been installed (for testing purposes) before I started the job. Normally it's a dual-boot setup, but with those Blackmagic drivers installed on the Avid side, it became unusable. When the Blackmagic drivers were uninstalled, the system worked fine again. YMMV.

Take care -- Mark Block

Thanks for your response, but I probably wasn't clear with my question.

On a system with *no* Avid hardware installed, will MC play nice if the computing platform has both Blackmagic and AJA IO interfaces installed?

I will want to use a Thunderbolt-connected AJA Io 4k for MC, but I need to have a BMD DeckLink installed for use with Resolve.

Just want to make sure MC will tolerate 2 (two) 3rd party IO devices (from different manufacturers) and that I will be able to select the AJA device for use with MC.

Thanks

Re: [Avid-L2] Multiple 3rd Party IO Devices Installed

It can. Avid will default to the Nitris DX/ Mojo DX if another video I/O is detected.

I remember reading that Avid hardware (Nitris DX, Mojo DX) co-existed well with a 3rd party interface -- more specifically, a Blackmagic card installed for use with Resolve.

Just wondering if anyone has experience with MC tolerating two 3rd party IO interfaces (e.g.: Blackmagic DeckLink and AJA Io 4k) attached to the hardware platform -- obviously with only one being used at a time.

Thanks.
