Re: [Avid-L2] OT - Coolest iPhone app

 

For those of you interested in what's going on behind the scenes on this,
it looks like the FX comes with the alpha in a separate file. I thought it
would be an image sequence of pngs with transparency, but this likely
allowed for greater compression control.

The dust in the Car Smash effect looks like it's in a jpg image sequence,
overlaid in "Screen" mode.

Pretty impressive how they crammed decent looking visuals into such a small
app, and that the iPhone is capable of doing it, and quickly.

I recently bought a Samsung led TV to use with my personal bay at home.

Yesterday I bought a wall mount for it. I think it was $79.99. Should be fine as the TV without its stock stand weighs about 15 lbs.

Well after prying a screw cover off I found that I could tighten the resistance on the tilt and it works. Oh well guess it's time to read the manual.

[Avid-L2] Re: Media Archiving. LTO?

 

This is a really interesting area currently

LTFS is relatively new and is a method of allowing an LTO-5 drive and it's
tape to appear as a drive on the host system and via that on a network.

However this is quite different from sing the LTO as a backup up restore
route.

One of the big attractions to using data backup techniques for managing post
files is it's a very established technology and industry and adopting it
buys into that. So it's as safe a bet as you can make on continued support
and access to your data in decades to come. However that didn't really suit
the needs of the post industry and the LTFS method has been developed to use
the LTO-5 tape and drive more like a sort of VTR come hard drive.

But will that still be carried forward and supported over the next 10, 20 or
30 years as the more traditional backup restore process are likely to be?

So my view is there are two different uses for an LTO-5 setup. One being
LTFS and something like a Cache-A for near line storage of media allowing
reasonably fast and easy access to content. And also a more robust
traditional software based backup solution for longer term backup.

But a lots happening in this areas so who knows what this year will see.

In trying to save some desk space on my home edit setup I got a new 23 inch lcd monitor and an articulated monitor desk mount from SIIG at Fry's.  I set it all up and it seemed to work fine until I found the monitor didn't support audio so I'll be swapping it with something else.  In the meantime I've got another older ViewSonic Monitor that had the necessary Vesa mounting holes.  I put it on the SIIG unit and the weight was too much and caused the mount witch would tilt back and for with the first monitor was now tilting the screen facing down due to the weiight of this particular monitor as soon as I let go of the monitor.  The ViewSonic is probably 6 ish years old but shouldn't an $89.00 mount kit handle the weight?  Curious what others have found with mounting kits.  I can see how the older monitor which has the power supply built in unlike the wall wart on the new monitor has a different weight distribution but I'd think anything with a Vesa
