[Avid-L2] Re: Re-encode for XDCAM bitstream compliance?

Yeah, this is a show with footage from various sources, but it has all been converted to Avid media.  I can tell you that I am VERY happy that the delivery went from 30p to 59.94i as I had 23.98 footage in this and...yeah, you can guess at the issues with that.

SO I'm thinking I'll be exporting as EXPORT TO FILE, and not AMA EXPORT.  I'm just curious how it knows how many audio tracks to export...is 8 the default?

Have you tried the highest rated email app?
With 4.5 stars in iTunes, the Yahoo Mail app is the highest rated email app on the market. What are you waiting for? Now you can access all your inboxes (Gmail, Outlook, AOL and more) in one place. Never delete an email again with 1000GB of free cloud storage.

[Avid-L2] Re-encode for XDCAM bitstream compliance?

I see from a google search:

If a sequence contained media from a Canon device, you could not export the sequence to an XDCAM device. You must enable the "Re-encode for XDCAM bitstream compliance" option in the XDCAM export settings dialog in order for this to work.

If I am just exporting to XDCam50 mxf file this option is checked.  I'm not exporting to a device but creating a .mxf file.  Is there any downside to leaving this function checked.  It would appear the spirit of the function is to enable sequences containing Cannon media to be exported to an XDCAM device.  My sequence has no Cannon media so I guess it wasn't necessary to check this feature but I left it on just because it was the default setting.  It does say that this will make the export take longer, which makes sense given it's re-encoding, but is there any reason to think this would effect compatibility of the resulting file.  It seems like it wouldn't but I have no way of testing other than ama linking back to the file which seems to work fine.

Any suggestions from those not watching the World Series?

[Avid-L2] EXPORT XDCAM Op-1a XDCAM

Hey gang...

I have a delivery requirement of Op1a MXF, XDCAM 422, 59.94 interlaced.  I am testing this export option before the project hits...so I open MC 8.9.1 and go into AMA Export and sure enough, there is MXF Op-1a.  But the only options for codec I have are 3 DNxHD flavors, and J4K.  No XDCAM 422.

So, what am I missing?  Is this done via EXPORT TO FILE?

OOOOOhhh...there it is.  I need to choose the EXPORT TO QT and then edit the settings.

OK, so why am I still typing this and posting it?  Because I question the audio export...is it set to DIRECT OUT automatically?  Does it know how many tracks I need to export, or does it do 8 tracks automatically, as that is what the format supports?  And how can I check this output to make sure it was done right?  OH, and do I check off that "re-encode for XDCAM bitstream compliance (slower)?"

Thanks

Shane

[Avid-L2] When did Avid start exporting Anc LTC?

I just noticed today that on my home system MacPro mid 2012 MC 8.6.4 DNxIO that my Tek scope is seeing ANC LTC out the HDSDI output.  That never happened with a NitrisDX to my knowledge.  I wired up my work scope to read the LTC out of the NitrisDX to run error logs and then I'd switch to reading ANX LTC to log SR tape playback error but I don't recall ever seeing ANC LTC on a NitrisDX output.

Is this new with later versions of Avid.  I remember always wanting it to do this.  So is it Avid Version related or IO hardware that the DNxIO opened up?

Is there a way that Avid can reference the source ANC LTC instead of sequence time?

[Avid-L2] Can't Open Red AMA Plugin Installer ON OS 10.12.5?

I upgraded my home Avid to MC 8.6.4 a month or so back but haven't worked on it.  I came from MC 8.5.3.  When I launch Avid it says Sony XDCam and Red ama plugins are not compatible.  I downloaded the Nablet Sony plugin and it installed no problem.  I downloaded the latest AMA Plugin for Red using the Avid links and I got a .zip that uncompressed to the REDR3D_Installer_pkg.  But it won't launch.  I click it and nothing seems to happen.  I get no error message.  Is this installer not compatible with 10.12.5?  I can't imagine that is the case.  I downloaded the minimum ama plugin for 8.6 at first and it didn't work so then I downloaded the latest and neither installer will launch.  I don't see a disk image appearing on the desktop but would that be what I should look for after clicking on the installer package.  I can't seem to manually open package contents either.  Is that new behavior in Sierra OS?

[Avid-L2] Re: BMD PCIe Gen 3 cable kit (DNxIQ) backwards compatibilty?

I have bounce between DNxIO and NitrisDX on the PCIe card that came with my NitrisDX back in mid 2012.  I also purchased a current PCIe card when I bought the DNxIO a few years back when they offered a trade in deal for my aja IO express.  I've used that card on a much older NitrisDX at work that is more of the 2009 vintage.  I knew on that system I would have to use the newly purchased PCIe card for the DNxIO and was happy it worked backwards compatible.  I did however seem to have some user conflicts and made separate startup drive for DNxIO use.  Never really found out the solution but when I would bounce between DNxIO and NitrisDX I had some video output settings issued and would have to trash MC state.  It was frustrating until I just created two startup drives and never bounce IO boxes.

I have not had that issue on my home system so maybe it's the newer computer at home.  So many variables it get tiring sorting through them.

Has anyone tested the backwards compatibility of the BMD PCIe Gen 3 cable kit (DNxIQ) with a Nitris DX?

This post excerpted from a BMD forum has me curious:

"Re: Specs for Blackmagic PCI Express Cable Kit?

Hello, Lee,

Blackmagic Design's Blackmagic PCIe cable kit is a four-lane PCIe 3.0 capable product. It is recommended for use with UltraStudio 4K Extreme 3.

It should be compatible with PCIe gen. 2.0 (4x lanes).

It does not need additional power (card is bus powered)

There is no additional instruction, the only additional consideration as with any other external PCIe is that power is removed from both host and the connected device before disconnecting the cable.

If you have any additional questions, please contact your local Blackmagic Design support office.

Blackmagic Design Technical support engineer
any posts made by myself prior to May 27, 2014 were before my employment with Blackmagic Design."

We did try out the Avid Cloud/Sphere product a few years back, and while it seemed promising, it was too burdensome in practice.  It took a extreme amount of patience to get sequences to come completely online and then upload changes.  But that was like 5 years ago or so.  We did not continue with the maintenance updates on it.  It might be working a lot better now.
