Re: [Avid-L2] Continuing Quest to output Dolby Vision over HDMI from Resolve 15.4 using Avid DNxIO?

HDR support came with HDMI 2.0a which I'm not sure if Avid DNxIO/UltraStudio 4k Extreme(TB2) are rated for.
DNxIQ/UltraStudio 4K Extreme3(TB3) should definitely be compatible.

Also, you need to be on 10.7 or higher Desktop Video drivers.

cheers, B.

Currently, HDR metadata is not transported over SDI. There is no standard agreed upon... yet.

Have you tried another cable ?

Dynamic metadata is optional under Dolby. If your deliverable requires only L1 XML and ST.2086 then you are not delivering dynamic Dolby Vision HDR.

Interesting.  How will it get metadata from Resolve?  Or do you configure it it in it's own config software and just tell it what Resolve is sending out?

Pick up an Aja Hi5+ (or 4k+).  attach the usb cable to your system,  load the config software,  and then you can turn the HDR metadata on and off for HDMI.  Has to be the + model.

Here is more from the Resolve manual:

To master with Dolby Vision in DaVinci Resolve using the built-in software CMU, you still need a more specific hardware setup than the average grading and finishing workstation, consisting of the following equipment:

Your DaVinci Resolve grading workstation, outputting via either a DeckLink 4K Extreme 12G or an UltraStudio 4K Extreme video interface

Mastering Monitor capable of outputting Dolby Vision levels suitable for the deliverable you're required to produce

NOTE: At the time of this writing, the software version of the CMU in DaVinci Resolve can only output a single standard through a single HD-SDI output of your connected video I/O device. For simultaneous display and trimming of HDR and SDR on separate displays, you'll need a hardware CMU.

So I'm wondering could using an HDMI 1.4 cable stop this from working.  As far as I know the Avid DNxIO has HDMI 2.0 but could it be that only the listed BM I/Os work?  "outputting via either a DeckLink 4K Extreme 12G or an UltraStudio 4K Extreme video interface"  I've always thought the DNxIO is an UltraStudio 4K but maybe that's not extreme enough.  I've emailed Black Magic to find out if the Avid DNxIO can do this in theory.  Oh the fun.

[Avid-L2] Continuing Quest to output Dolby Vision over HDMI from Resolve 15.4 using Avid DNxIO?

Ok there is a lot here.

1. HDR project in Resolve is very tricky. There are a lot of settings you need to do properly in order to get the correct color and gamma output.
I suggest creating a project that is Rec 2020 / ST2084 gamma for input, timeline and output setting in Color Management.

Maximum timeline Luminance timeline value at 10k ( don't ask why for now ).

HDR mastering to 1000 nits.

2. When bringing in material to your HDR project, make sure Resolve is interpreting the color and gamma correctly. Right click the source and manually change if needed in media page.  In your case your, the IMF should be set to 709 and likely 2.4 gamma.

3. Don't use any LUTs in this case as it complicates things. Do this after you are generating the proper HDR signal to your TV.

4. Under Video Monitoring / Video format / disable Dual SDI.
This will prevent the second SDI output from generating a trim level signal. It will be the same as SDI 1, your mastering settings.

5. Dolby should be active in Color Management. I assume your hardware can do HDMI 2.0.

Enable HDR metadata over HDMI.

6. Enable HDR scopes in Preference / User.

If you have everything right, your peaks should be hitting around 100 nits. If not, can your force DV HDR mode manually with your TV?

So far no luck.  I've got a Resolve project I'm using to make IMFs.  I bring a Rec 709 IMF back into the project to check it.  This is an SDR Rec 709 IMF.  I make a timeline using the IMF clip, not creating timeline using CPL.  I then set an output lut to gamma 2.4 to 2084 1000 Nits.  Not the output on my scope and the LG 2016 OLED fed by HDMI 1.4 cable shows a darker signal.  The Rec 709 peaks are at approx 50 percent on the scope, like I would expect them to be.

I go to project settings color managment tab and enable Dolby Vision for 1000 Nits, setting target in the settings to 1000 nits.  I now see the Dolby Vision Tab in the color page.  I also in project settings IIRC Master Tab enable Dolby Vision Metadata over HDMI.  I don't see any way to turn off the trim mode in the color page Dolby Tab.  There is a pulldown menu with various target displays but there is not choice to turn off or use no target display.  I also haven't found the dual monitor mode.  Have I missed a step and need to turn on something like 3D stereo mode?

So I have an output that seems correct to feed a monitor that would interpret the levels as HDR but the LG is still running in a Rec 709 mode as far as I can tell.  Do I have to do the analyze stuff to make this work.  The manual says don't use a tunneling monitor for grading but I'd at least like to see a reasonable representation of HDR.  Could my 1.4 HDMI cable not carry Dolby Metadata.  I thought as long as it had the ethernet capability it was good enough for short HDMI 2.0.  What I'm expecting is to see the dolby vision logo pop up briefly when I swttich into this software tunneling mode.

I don't thinks I'm clear when you say disable dual output mode, it read like I shouldn't confuse it with Dual Link mode.  Where is this dual output mode I should disable?  Is this somehow tied to being in a faux 3d mode to get and HDR and and SDR output simultaneously, which is what we did in class but we didn't get deep into the set up.

I'm just an SDR guy thrust into an HDR new world.  Help me MR. WIZARDQQQ

I can't seem to find the thread I had going on the Yahoo Group here.

Here was the last advice I got to try to get Resolve 15.4 using an Avid DNxIO to feed a proper DolbyVision signal over HDMI to my 2016 LG OLED TV.

I think I joined the list late '93 or spring '94, jumping over from the BBS, I might still have an archive of stuff from avid-l@calvin.edu. The wise messages from Steve Cohen, the quarrels between Frank Capria and Pete Gould, all the weirdness of pglue … good to see this community get a new retirement home.

I'm with the two Tims on this one. Given that almost everything I do is short format, I now do most of my grading in After Effects or Premiere.

I still miss my DS though. 🙃

Re: [Avid-L2] What is your #Color Correction Tool of Choice

I've been doing some teaching of the Baselight plugin. It's a ice solution that works well.
It's what Symphony should have been. Worth a trial run and a lot slicker than a round trip to resolve.

The one customer I have that does a lot of color uses the Baselight plugin…they pretty much never have picture lock.

I'm with Tim Mangini on this.

What do I prefer? Resolve.

What do I end up using most of the time? Lumetri. (occasionally Colorista)

Re: [Avid-L2] What is your #Color Correction Tool of Choice

In terms of the number of shows, Symphony is still by far the most common for our clients. Resolve attracts more one-offs such as features and docs. The workflow from MC to Resolve is just too slow and problematic for multi-episode shows with tight fixed deadlines.

Symphony just needs an overhaul. It still lacks a decent Dolby Vision workflow.

Re: [Avid-L2] What is your #Color Correction Tool of Choice

The poll is a little limiting in giving only one option.  Forced to pick one I selected Resolve, as that is what most of our colorists would choose if given the time and budget, but we use Baselight plugin and Symphony almost in equal measure based on each client's requirements.

Re: [Avid-L2] Adobe Media Encoder crashes running in background with Avid or Resolve running?

I think I tried that but it still failed.  I will give that a shot again later to see if it works.  I'm using the Nvidia driver instead of the Mac OS driver just because I wonder if that could also factor in.  I also just had issues opening Resolve while Avid was creating a video mixdown.  Resolve worked after I shut off the hardware but upon quitting Resolve the GUI got wonky, which I've seen before.  Before I added the expansion chassis and upgraded to Sierra I would crash running out of Vram.  I think maybe some aspect of this still exists and creates some of the wonkyness.  I would have thought all that time with a Radeon 5770 would have had more hiccups than the GTX but I guess there is some Cuda battle going on under the hood.
