Re: [Avid-L2] Connecting Thunderbolt 4 to Thunderbolt 2 on Avid DNxIO?

I didn't realize that with M1 there are no compatible expansion chassis.  Given the new mac studio had TB4 which is compatible with TB3 and there are many TB3 expansion chassis options I thought that would just work.  Given TB3/4 is a standard I wonder what under the hood aspect of the M1 chip doesn't allow for an expansion chassis?  Oh wait IIRC Apple released that special SDK know as "Crush John Moore's Hopes and Dreams of a new Computer API."

This is a very informative thread for me and I hope others.

Re: [Avid-L2] Connecting Thunderbolt 4 to Thunderbolt 2 on Avid DNxIO?

Marianna,

that's good to hear!

However, as my knowledge is for know: M1 is not supporting TB1/2 at all. Since, for know, there is no PCIe-card extension working on current Apple Silicon (M1 and all derivates) there is no way connecting any TB1/2 devices to a current (except: MacPro2019) machine. I don't know about WIN-machines, however, this seems more likely to be an issue with Apple Silicon and not Intel/AMD-CPU drioven machines.

For John it's the main culprit: Avid DNxIO (since it's TB 1/2-version) will not work on this week released Apple Studio, no matter what Avid MC-version he's running then.

Still, glad to hear Avid is on the case!

Thanks, Marianna!

Best

Re: [Avid-L2] Aces and other color managed workflow Production Side to Post?

There are choices in Resolve Color Managed settings Input Color Space ACES (AP0) and ACES (AP1) then for Input Gamma ACEScc and ACEScct.  There are also a myriad of other Color Spaces and Gammas.
I found this too:

What is IDT and ODT?
IDT (Input Device Transform, now known as the ACES Input Transform) – The IDT takes the original camera data and converts it into the scene linear ACES color space. ... The RRT converts scene referred linear data to an ultrawide display referred data set. The RRT works in combo with the ODT.Oct 1, 2016

It seems that various softwares will export EXR files in ACES (AP0)

Here is something else to add to the alphabet soup of color managment:

"At our studio we have an ACES pipeline, still under development though. We convert footage on set to ACES conformed EXR:s throught Colorfront Express Dailies. They say that they convert the files into ACEScc to be able to do color work on them. But when I render them, without any ODT, they should be transcoded to AP0 shouldn´t they? It´s the same in Resolve. The color science is ACEScc but if rendered into EXR:s without any ODT should give me files in AP0 shouldn´t it?

The way I get it ACEScc, ACEScct, ACEScg is just working color spaces or color science. All the real data is always in AP0.

The problem is, if the software really converts the file into ACEScc then everything is just wasted and also if it does convert it then I would have to render to two online paths, one with ACEScc for grading, and one with ACEScg for vfx.

Please tell me someone that all ACES conformed EXR:s without any ODT rendered from any software is always, by standard in linear AP0 color space. And that ACEScc or ACES cg is kind of a virtual color space only used by the software to be able to handle the ACES (AP0) color space."

So to start with the basics does anybody know if the cameras provide an ACES transform so the camera video tap is taking the camera image and running it through and ACES transform to display it in Rec 709 SDR for video village or an ACES transform to take the camera image and feed HDR 2084 to a video village HDR monitor?  This would make sense to me.  I would think the theory would be then video village would be seeing something that would be identical (or very close) to what would be seen in Resolve Color managed ACES workflow because the input Color Space and Input Gamma would get the same transform as the on set video tap did.  I'm just speculating out loud but this would make sense to me.

Re: [Avid-L2] Aces and other color managed workflow Production Side to Post?

This is what I know, which isn't expert level but might be helpful.

First - it's ACES, not Aces. ACES stands for Academy Color Encoding System, which is comprised of a colorspace (larger than even Rec2020, and closer to the perceptual limit of the human eye) and a system to transform various inputs to that colorspace and transform out of that colorspace to the real world (displays, projection, etc.).

No cameras can "shoot in ACES". So whoever said that isn't quite understanding what ACES is or how cameras work. But that's not far off, and pretty much useful to you, since you would safely assume when someone says this, they really mean we "shot in RAW" or "LOG" or "camera sensor native". You know that it was shot in Panasonic V-Log. And you got some on-set CDLs that might help in the Input Transform to get that media into the ACES colorspace.

Going into the world of wider gamut than 709, LUTs are way less useful than before. Rather, you should be using the Color Management System of whatever software you use (Resolve) to handle the transforms. The reason is (allow me to quote the Academy) "ACES transforms are capable of handling colors that fall outside the expected color spaces. They generally provide a smoother and more accurate translation to the target colors." So abandon ye LUTs, which you seem to allude to knowing. Or just know that if you use them in a creative way, you are subsequently limiting the gamut.

I like the idea of ACES but it's a large commitment of a post pipeline. As you probably have seen, Netflix's delivery spec requires graded and ungraded masters, and working the ACES workflow in Resolve can make that easier to handle come delivery time.

Does shooting in "Aces" mean the video tap off the camera used an Aces transform to be displayed on the video village monitor?

If I receive Panny Vlog/Vgamma is there anything inherently Aces about the media?

Is there a way to shoot directly to Aces instead of Vlog or Sony Slog 3 etc...?

I recently found in Resolve the Vlog/Vgamma that I received with CDL works properly in an Aces mode in Resolve.  This seems to deal with the conversion more appropriately than my standard approach which has been the Lut for Vlog to Rec 709.  For a long time I've been asking why there aren't Luts to take Vlog to HDR P3D65/2084 but have never found such a Lut.  It seems either Aces or Resolve's Color Managed workflow allow for input color space and input gamma to achieve a proper conversion to the timeline color space and gamma.

Not sure I've wrapped my head around the various steps and proper approaches in Post.  Anybody got some suggestions?

The issue is in Resolve but you are correct that it's proper to install the Video Desktop after MC is installed IIRC.

Well, not to be the devil's advocate here: me were saying TB 1/2 does not work on the M1+ (any Apple Silicon). The chart you linked is dated 2017.

So, the plan on the new Mac Studio might not be _the_ answer. But let's have Avid inhere.

Marianna?

M1 support: Avid's DNxIO, with adaptors? Does it work? and if so: is it supported?

Re: [Avid-L2] Getting embedded audio out of Resolve through Avid DNxIO?

HI john,

For us, the latest BMD Desktop Drivers work fine with MC 2021.12 (on Catalina, MacPro 2019). However, we are utilising either the UltraStudio 4K (1HE-version not the "Extreme" 3HE) or the 12G-Decklink card. New to the systems is one UltraStudio 4K Mini, which also works fine in said environments (and if attached to the M1 MacBook Pro (see other post).

Just give it a try and let me say:

Juggling cats is something we left behind since Navin Johnson explained it to all of us.

Re: [Avid-L2] Connecting Thunderbolt 4 to Thunderbolt 2 on Avid DNxIO?

Hi John,

for what I can tell on our findings here, and that's also "approved" by Apple: the M1 (Apple Silicon) architecture does not support TB1/2 anymore, even not over adaptors.

We are sitting on two BMD UltraStudio 4Ks sporting TB 1 / TB2 respectively and if attached to the M1 MacBook Pro (Max) we have here they are not recognised at all. However, they do work on the latest MacPro Intels we are running as the main brains. The Avid DNxIOis the 3HE-Version, formely branded "UltraStudio Extreme" but if it's the TB 2-version my guess is: it won't work on the M1. Maybe Marianna can confirm?

Do I need to change sequence to 1080,

If you relink to the camera originals and highlight them all in a bin then as suggested open the sequence in another bin.  Then choose relink to selected items in open bins.  That should work if the original clips were transcodes from ama linked clips.
