Re: [Avid-L2] Relink Issues

As has been suggested drag the .mob file to an empty bin. Highglight all the clips in the new bin. In you sequence bin show referenced group clips. Drag those group clips to a new bin show referenced clips highlight the clips and relink to highlighted clips in open bins. Also do you have reling to all clips in a group checked when you relink the sequence?

Re: [Avid-L2] Relink Issues

It looks like the clips that aren't relinking are grouped clips.

But even if I show reference clips in the bin, select that master clips and try to relink, I can't get them back online.

Stumped.

Thanks for your help. My responses below:

- No!

What do you mean by "renamed the Avid MediaFiles folder"?

- I changed the name of the "1" folder, just trying to force Avid to re-build the data base.

When you deleted you mdb files, did they rebuild? Did you do that for
all the individual media folders? Have you tried dragging the mdb files
to an empty bin?

- Yes. This caused scanning and indexing but didn't get the relink to happen

You said that "most" of your media is offline. Is that part that is on
line on the same media drive as the offline? Same media folder?

- All in the same folder.

I just looked on my laptop Symphony 6.5.3 and I don't see that folder.  I assume it came along at Ver. 7 when the "AMA mediadata base" came along.  Does that make sense?  Nice trouble shooting job, bet it felt good to nail it in the end.

[Avid-L2] Relink Issues

I'm having some trouble getting a bin to relink on a home system, and any help would be much appreciated.

Bin originated in Avid MC v.8

I had my AE copy the Avid Media folder to a shuttle drive. We dismounted the terrablock, opened the bin and were able to to get everything to relink to the shuttle drive. OK, so we know everything is definitely on the shuttle drive.

On the home system the bin opens fine (MC 7.0.3 - that shouldn't matter, right?) but most of the media is offline.

I've tried:

- every permutation in the relink window I can think of

- trashed the mdb file

- renamed the Avid MediaFiles folder

I'm pretty much out of ideas. How do I get this media to re-link so I can work for free all weekend?!?!

Thanks for your advice.

[Avid-L2] Re: OTish: Dolby Digital 5.1 vs PCM Center channel Matrix Errors on OTA signals in L.A.? [1 Attachment]

I received some Tektronix documents regarding various Dolby/audio information.  I'm gong to upload to the files section if the attachement doesn't come through in this post.  Time to get my nerd on.

I think I was saying the stream coming from OTA (not OVER OTA) is Dolby E. It's E at the head end, then gets packed into OTA as regular Dolby AC3. But yeah, doesn't change the explanation. I was just pointing out how E is the container at the programmer's end, and if it has 5.1 +2 buckets to put audio channels in, it will always have those buckets, no matter how many they decide to fill.

For the acurracy's sake there is no DolbyE over cable, satellite or OTA - only DolbyD a.k.a DolbyAC3.
The other thing worth mentioning is that the majority of receivers have different surround modes, where they remap/remix incoming decoded streams to match the number of speakers - including creation of phantom channels to fill up the listening space - which can also be a factor in what John's experiencing.

Job is correct here. The stream coming from OTA is Dolby E. That provides up to 5.1+2 channels of audio. Much of primetime programming is 5.1, so that's getting passed through the E stream. However, most of the commercials and promos are not mixed for 5.1, so the two channels (stereo) get encoded into the same E stream and passed through, coming out in stereo (no center channel or surround) from your receiver (since the receiver never has to switch decoding modes).

When you switch the TV into PCM, you're telling the TV to decode the E stream into two channels of PCM (likely a 5.1 downmix to Pro-Logic). Then your receiver is now decoding Pro Logic into LCRS, and performs that decode on everything. That decode is done in time and phase domains, so it's just math (not discrete) - therefore, something that is not surround can come out sounding like surround if the mix has certain time and phase relationships. An easy point to make here is that Pro Logic decoding always takes whatever is common phase and common level in L/R speakers and puts it out C channel. So if there's a stereo mix that has dialogue mixed into the phantom center, the Pro Logic decoder will attempt to isolate this and put it out the center channel speaker.

Ideally, I would leave the TV set to Auto, let your receiver decode the stream, and anything that's true surround will come out that way, and anything that's not will come out its appropriate channels. Then we can talk about how most promo and many commercials' post budgets do not accommodate for surround mixing.

You're confusing Dolby Digital encoding and actual channel use.

If you create a stereo mix, you end up with an L and an R channel. You can create a 5.1 DD signal from that with just the L and R channels addressed.

My bet is that some of those commercials were simply mixed in stereo, and do not use C, Lfe Ls or Rs.

[Avid-L2] Re: WAY OT: Web Hosting

I just switched to Squarespace.  A small learning curve, but the web building tools, including a library of templates geared mainly toward visual artists, produces a great website for those who may lack in artistic and technical GUI designs for web.  For example, they have a "logo generator" that spits out some very cool looking logos... something cheap, easy and already properly HTML coded for the web.  I have a small site (no e-commerce, etc), and for my particular set up, I get a year of Squarespace, INCLUDING hosting, and free domain name registration, 24/7 support for $89.00 per year.  They also will give you a 14 day free trial of their full suite.  I think I saw that they have a workflow to import wordpress files into their system (along with a variety of other types of media).  Worth checking out for your needs. [Avid-L2] Re: AMPI Session count?

Is your bin in script or frame view with lots of clips.  I haven't had that error on my 5.5.5 SNDX but things do get a little wonky when a big bin in script view is open.

However, we don't have pop-up monitor windows open, and only one bin
window open. Restarting the Avid clears this, but it comes back.

Have not been able to discern a pattern or what activity is triggering it.

Any suggestions from the collective of the "L"?
