[Avid-L2] JBL LSR305 audio monitors on sale (my fave low-cost monitor for audio post).

Hey! The JBL LSR305 is on sale for $100/each at a bunch of places. That's $50 off regular price, and $100 off for a pair (<== For the mathematically challenged).

Looks like this is a Black Friday sale, but it could be that JBL will soon announce an update/replacement speaker coming out soon (what with NAMM not that far away). But even if there is an updated model coming out, this is a great deal.

One of many vendors offering this price:

I don't know how the current line of Event monitors, especially the lower-priced ones, compare to what I have.

Especially over say 90dB (which we shouldn't be at anyway)…and seems like they're a little more room-dependent than some other monitors..in the right room, they seem good. Some older mixers I know, who've perhaps lost some of their own high-frequency response, seem to like them. :-)

Have you tried the highest rated email app?
With 4.5 stars in iTunes, the Yahoo Mail app is the highest rated email app on the market. What are you waiting for? Now you can access all your inboxes (Gmail, Outlook, AOL and more) in one place. Never delete an email again with 1000GB of free cloud storage.

I'm not sitting in front of my system, but in Adobe Media Encoder you set up a watch folder and assign encoding profiles to it. When media hits that folder from any application, it automatically encodes it. If memory serves, you can also set up automatic uploads once the media is encoded.

I've not used an Avid for over 5 years, but looks like i'll be switching from good ole Final Cut 7 to an Avid on a Mac Pro (cylinder) in the very near future. (the Mac was bought early 2015).

I'm a little rusty on Avid developments though, so have a few questions.

The last Avid system I used was hardware based (Adrenaline)
This Avid system is a MacPro cylinder with Media Composer software only.
Assuming the 6-core 32GB cylinder will be way more powerful than anything i've had before, so will there be any need for an additional hardware accelerator (Mojo or Nitris).  I wont be needing any tape input or output, so what would i gain from the Mojo or Nitris?

Dumb question - How do get video output from the Mac Pro? I see there's an HDMI port on the cylinder? Or do I need a Mojo or Nitris for video output options?)

Is sorenson squeeze still the recommended third party application for background batch exporting?

Finally, i've always used local raid storage, but looks like the move onto this system involves ditching the local storage and doing everything over the network (10gig fibre channel).
In theory this should work, but any reason why this is a bad idea?

Finally, are there still London user group meeting, (or failing that, anyone willing to give me a quick 10min run-through on the main software advances in the past 5 years?)

I'm looking forward to getting back into Avid.  I guess you never forgot the first system you learnt on.

Many thanks for taking the time to read.
Cheers,
Chris

Re: [Avid-L2] Mac Pro (cylinder) Avid setup questions

I have had a MP trashcan for a couple of years.

1. You must use Thunderbolt or USB 3.0 based break-out-box like BM's UltraStudio series or AJA's Io 4K or T-Tap.
The MojoDX is officially supported via TB to HIB converter (if you can find it).

I have had great luck with the T-Tap to drive a reference monitor.  It has Thunderbolt in, and both SDI & HDMI outputs.  Avid, Premiere & After Effects all run well on it.  It is a bit finicky with respect to firmware matching the MC or Premiere versions.  Of course Resolve needs BM hardware to drive a client monitor.

2. Sorenson Squeeze, Adobe's MediaEncoder, Apple's Compressor and Telestream Episode are all capable encoders. Even BM's DaVinci Resolve Lite is more than capable for converting files in prepariation for post.

Haven't used Squeeze in years.  Adobe Media Encoder screams on my 8 core trash can.

FWIW, Avid runs okay on the MP, but the Adobe apps seem to be much better optimized for it.

[Avid-L2] timeline scroll using Apple mouse

After being off a week, I came back to the system I normally use and found I can't use the mouse's trackball to scroll forwards and backwards in the timeline. Instead, a left/right movement of the scroll ball zooms in and out. That's sort of cool, but I've gotten used to moving quickly in the timeline with a flick of the scroll ball. Another editor used the system when I was away, but I can't find a setting that puts the mouse's scrolling behavior back to normal. BTW, when I'm in a bin, the Audio Mixer, or any other Avid window, the left/right scrolling is normal; it's only in the timeline that it doesn't work.

The system is on Media Composer 8.5.3. Thanks in advance for any advice.
