[Avid-L2] OT: Google Toolbar Bookmarks Server Unavailable?

It seems like for the last 2 or 3 days I can't get access to bookmarks through the google tool bar bookmarks.  I've used this since google browser sync is no longer supported.  Anybody else have this problem.  I did try uninstalling and reinstalling no luck.  Still get server temporarily unavailable.  Hmmmm

Alltop has become one of my favourite sites. Now it could be among yours
too.

With the co-operation of Neenz at Alltop there is now one site to rule
them all. All your Avid and/or editing related RSS sources in one spot.
Or rather all the ones I am aware of.

P.S. Sorry no direct hot dogs, turducken or GFIs. I do not think I could
explain the importance to Neenz, explaining a Media Composer was tough
enough.

QT 7.5.5 is probably wrong. I was going by what the "Plaintif" said. Probably 7.6.5 or whatever is current is what was upgraded to.Jimmy got a spare room for me and Rubin? Till QT do us part was in our wedding vows IIRC.

[Avid-L2] Re: End credits roller

From Adam Wilts web page, http://adamwilt.com/Tidbits.html

Character Generators & Titling:

I spent almost four years writing software for the Abekas A72 in the early '90's; I learned a lot about what works and what doesn't work when putting text on a video screen.

Doing good CG in interlaced video is trickier than you might think. Doing it right in compressed interlaced video (such as DV) is even harder. With interlace, you can have problems of line twitter on static or moving text, as well as roll-induced "crawlies" and distortions. With compression, you add problems of codec pathologies. And there are always pitfalls associated with colors and bandwidth.

Line twitter occurs when you have fine, single-line detail that appears in one field but not in the other. The detail so rendered will flicker at the frame rate, while the rest of the image updates at the field rate. The frame rate (29.97 Hz in 525-line NTSC; 25 Hz in 625-line PAL) is slow enough that your eye notices the flicker, and it's very annoying.

First, make sure that the fonts you use don't have fine, single-line horizontal strokes that will show up as line twitter. Look at heavier fonts in the same family: instead of light or roman, look at bold, extrabold, or black variants. But bear in mind that instead of using Coronet or Script Light, you might have to switch to Helvetica or Times Bold. Often I find that the delicate typefaces I prefer in print work just won't translate properly to video, and I have to find something else instead.

If you're dead-set on using a fine, light typeface, try building a font that thickens up the strokes: use outline, soften, glow, or extrusion (solid drop shadow) effects in a similar color or brightness. Sometimes a soft drop shadow in a similar color with a minimal offset can be used — even Premiere 4.2's limited text capabilities will give you that much!

The problem with interlace and rolls is that as the text moves up the screen, its position with respect to each field's line structure can either change, or stay the same. If it stays the same, your text will look as good moving as it does when it's still. If it changes, the text will lose resolution and may flicker, distort, and crawl around as it rolls.

Imagine characters in a screen font with a height of 10 lines. When placed on a page at its starting position, the even scanlines in the character all fall on the even video field, while the odd scanlines fall on the odd field. As the text sits there, the even fields show lines 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 in the text, while the odd fields show lines 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9. All ten scanlines in the text are seen over the course of any two fields.

Now start a roll. Any decent CG updates the roll on a field basis; after one field is displayed, the text is moved up a certain amount for the next field, up the same amount for the next field, and so on.

Let's say that the director wants a nice, slow roll, to kill some time. You've selected 60 lines/second (CGs that allow you to set the roll rate usually use scanlines per second as the measure, and in NTSC-land the 59.94 Hz field rate is rounded to 60 Hz to keep operators from getting bogged down in fractional math. If you're in PAL-land, assume you're rolling at 50 lines/second for this example), and pushed the "go" key on the CG.

Now in the first even field, character scanlines 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 are shown. Next the text is moved up one scanline because at a nominal field rate of 60 Hz, one scanline per field results in 60 lines per second. So when the odd field is displayed, the text, being up one line from its even-field position, has lines 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 displayed again — and lines 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 don't get put onscreen! The next vertical interval comes along, and the text is moved up one line again, so that the even scanlines once again appear in the even field. The next vertical interval arrives, and up goes the text again — one line! — so that the next odd field, like all the even and odd fields before it, shows the even scanlines of the text. The odd scanlines in the text never appear onscreen!

The result is half-vertical-resolution text that looks awful. Thin horizontal strokes will either appear about twice as thick as they should, or twice as thin, depending on your luck (sometimes you get the evens, sometimes the odd scanlines, depending on the CG you're using, the initial position of the text, and the field timing when you press the "go" key).

Now go back and double the roll speed, to 120 lines/second (or 100 lines/second if using a 625/50 CG). Now, the first even field shows the even scanlines. Come the vertical interval, the text is moved up two lines (two lines per field times 60 fields per second gives 120 lines per second); the relative positioning of the text with respect to the field structure remains the same, since the even scanlines are moved up two lines to the next higher even scanline, while the odds are moved up to the next higher odd line. When the odd field is displayed, the odd scanlines in the text are shown, just as they should be! The full vertical resolution of the text remains.

You may have noticed a pattern here. When the roll rate (in lines/second) was the same as the field rate (in fields/second), the roll looked awful. When the roll rate was twice the field rate, things looked fine. As it turns out, this relationship holds for all integer multiples: roll rates that are odd multiples of the field rate look awful. Even multiples look great. Thus for 525/59.94 (or 525/60, more or less) video, good roll rates are 120, 240, 360, and the like. In 625/50, the good ones are 100, 200, 300, 400, and so on.

Unfortunately, in 525/59.94 the only two decent rates that are slow enough to be read are 120 and 240 (and the latter only on a good day!). 625/50 video is better — not only are the roll rates about 20% slower, there are almost 20% more active scanlines in a frame, so in 625 you can roll at 100, 200, and 300 lines/second without straining any eyeballs.

What about roll rates that aren't integer multiples of the field rate? As you might guess, as the text moves, its positional relationship to the field structure no longer follows an integral structure, but changes on a field-by-field basis. This leads to two things:

Unless the CG you are using offers sub-pixel positioning, the roll won't be able to execute smoothly, and the text will stutter or judder up the screen.
The roll motion will "beat" with the field structure, as the scanlines themselves appear to roll through the text (at a rate proportional to the difference between the roll rate and the nearest integral multiple of the field rate), causing time-dependent rippling distortions of the text (the "crawlies") that look really horrible.
What real CGs do to avoid this is to offer only the "good" rates by default; extra work is required to set arbitrary roll rates. When you select timed rolls (the total time is set, rather than the speed), better CGs will fiddle things to wind up with a good rate. Some may just pick the rate that comes closest to meeting the desired time; some Chyrons run part of the roll at one rate, then "shift gears" to finish at a different rate to get the desired total duration; the A72 (and probably the Texus) "adaptively spaces" the text in the roll, stretching or compressing the vertical line spacing to allow a good roll rate to be used and still meet the time target.

What crummy CGs offer in the way of speed control is none at all. For example in Premiere 5.0, where they've finally understood that folks want to roll credits, there are no tools for setting or even reporting roll rates in the titler: one just has to adjust things by trial and error. This stinks: if you're stuck with such a CG and need to produce for interlaced video, complain loudly to the vendor about their lousy non-video-aware tools, and then go look for a CG that does things right ( Inscriber Technology's CG is one of the few that does; you might also check out Pinnacle's TypeDeko on the PC, McRobert's Comet CG on the Mac, and Boris Graffiti on PC or Mac. These may offer proper controls... and there may be others out there as well. Let me know what you come up with and how well it works — or doesn't).

[Avid-L2] End credits roller

I remember that someone posted a "scientific" way of calculating the
duration/speed of a rolling credit so that it doesn't flicker. I tried
to search the list but couldn't find it. Anyone remembers?
I'm looking fir tips on how to do a neat roller.
Have a good weekend if you don't spend it in a cutting room. ;-)

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Clip Colors Reappear Quandry?

Definitely something wrong with clip colors. I have sync clips that have
been color coded, but sometimes, when removing the color ("none"), the
picture part of the sync clip will keep its color, but the sound part of the
sync clip will not have the color.

But I fear the problem is bigger. Sometimes my clips will lose metadata. For
instance, I have a few bins open with organised sync clips and some
sequences. I open the media tool, and all the Camroll information will have
disappeared. If I first open a bin with all the master clips, then open the
media tool, all that metadata is still there.

Did not manage to create a reproducable scenario for this, so could not
supply tech support with enough info on it, but something's rotten with
metadata in v4.

Another error comes from the new feature of retaining dissolves when
dragging clips around the rimeline. Sometimes, not always, just sometimes,
when I cut away filler between two clips with fades, both fades are
remembered by the Avid and the track will be corrupt. In a zoomed out view,
the timeline looks fine. As soon as you zoom into the timeline, you will see
that this track is now out of sync by the amount of one of the fades. Takes
some time to find exactly which is the offending one, and especially nasty
if you have more than one.

[Avid-L2] Re: Clip Colors Reappear Quandry?

I actually am dealing with the color of the master clips changing. Many of the editors cut from sub clips that may be the source of the color reverting back to something. I think having both bins open including the sub clips might get everything in sync but it might be buried in the sequence metadata and if a mob updates or the sequence gets relinked by someone else that might also be the culprit. Not a big deal but in makes me scratch my head and wonder. I think it all might fall under the blanket of MOB conflict that Steve Bayes use to talk about. Of course he found the solution to MOB conflict, work for Apple and FCP. ;-)

[Avid-L2] Semi-OT: Soft Sync issues out of Compressor / DVDSP?

Source is self-contained Quicktime file - 720/24p (23.976) HD ProRes.
Everything is in beautiful perfect frame accurate sync.

After encoding, building the disc and then burning, by the end of the 3
minute piece, the audio seems to be "ever so slightly" out of sync (less
than a frame, I'd say) but enough to catch your eye.

Browsing the Cow, it sounds like there's some issues, but I haven't seen
anything like this until a few weeks ago.

Anyone seen this before? Is there a fix?

Re: [Avid-L2] Clip Colors Reappear Quandry?

I've noticed that if I put a color on a subclip that is different than
the master clip that after a while the subclip with switch back to the
color of the master clip. This could be a thing where you need to go
find the original master clip and change the color on that and then
open the bins together so that the copy of the master clip then picks
up the new color.

I've found the same strangeness on adding comments. If I add comment
text to a master clip the subclip will pick it up and keep it. If I
add the comment text to the subclip then there is a good chance that
it will go away or switch back to whatever the master clip has.

RE: [Avid-L2] Recovery software.

Alan

It rather depends on the nature of the crash.

You could start with Spinrite from www.grc.com but if it is a
destructive mechanical crash then that wont help.

If you can't hear it spinning up then a brief spell, in an antistatic
bag, in the freezer til all the metal components have contracted can
sometimes help.

It was my understanding that the "Patches" are complete installs on the Mac side. Do I have this correct? I seem to recall this from a thread a while back.

Is the only difference between LE and PE codec packages the mpeg codecs? Or do I have to get the PE codecs from the links below? I thought I saw the PE codecs being loaded during the install of 4.0.5.1 but I might have been mistaken. Is there an under the hood folder that can be checked to see if I have the latest codecs package? Would this new codec package work on my 3.1.3 on an older Imac?

[Avid-L2] Clip Colors Reappear Quandry?

I've been using clip colors to help me distinguish newly aquired master clips for sequence additions or revisions.  I take the existing sequence master clips and remove all clip colors and then the new clips I give a color usually blue.  I can then sort and see where I have new clips that will have similar color correction.  After a while I notice that suddenly I see clips with green and yellow etc...   Why are these colors returning after I removed them?  I haven't found the exact pattern of steps that makes them appear but I'm curious if anyone else sees this behavior.  I'm on Mac SNDX 3.5.4.

I'm finding clip colors are almost as hard as free loading relatives to get rid of.  I'd appreciate a solution to both my problems.  Anybody got a spare room for me to put my uh, well clip colors in so they don't return?  (biting my toungue)   ;-)

That sure was a lot of keyboard and not much mouse for working with video. Great though. It's just another example of how much TV sucks ass.

[Avid-L2] Re: OT: Enhance

This stuff is always painful. I am a master locksmith from earlier in life and when I see the "master key" or the single pick that can magically open any door it kills me. And I used to get requests to bring the "master key" to open the door for people who locked themselves out. Yikes!

I have to imagine every professional cringes when they see the same stuff pulled with their particular craft on the screen. Dramatic license, Ptoooey!

What would be the Best way to burn a DVD from Avid MC? Program length is
about 3 hours 15 minutes.
I have tried splitting the program in two parts ... 2hours and 1hour 15mins.
From MC I Export to Sorenson Squeeze, using the DV codec setting, In
Sorenson I use the default setting of either 2 pass VBR setting or 1 pass
CBR for Video and PCM for Audio, the transcoded files are xxx.m2v for Video
and xxx.wav for Audio.
On my attempt to burn with Nero, the files are not accepted.
With Sonic MyDVD, it re-transcodes takin up almost 12 hours and then aborts
the process... the partially burnt Video (on 8.5 Gb Dual Layer disk) Video
shows up in good quality but there is only static for Audio).
With DVDit 6. The Video file is accepted but Audio is missing! So cannot
attempt to burn!
I have even tried only importing the .mov files only, generated by MC...
with the same results.
Any Solutions, please?!!!
Regards
David Deane

RE: [Avid-L2] Re: New Avid QuickTime Codec's Correct Black Exports

The PE Codec package is installed when installing 4.0.5. I don't know if it's installed when installing the patch. Yes the only difference today is that the MPEG-IMX codec is missing from the LE codec package.

Although we don't go back and qualify the codecs on older versions of MC they should in general work fine. The one caveat is that the DNxHD QuickTime codec will create media that may not play correctly in 3.1.3 unless you install one of the codec patches available.

If I just downloaded the latest Mac MCsoft 4.0.5.1 patch which is a complete install will that give me the latest PE codec package? Is the only difference between LE and PE codec packages the mpeg codecs? Or do I have to get the PE codecs from the links below? I thought I saw the PE codecs being loaded during the install of 4.0.5.1 but I might have been mistaken. Is there an under the hood folder that can be checked to see if I have the latest codecs package? Would this new codec package work on my 3.1.3 on an older Imac?

Re: [Avid-L2] Procedure/Method for Best quality DVD burn?

You may simply be putting too much on the disk. Will Nero accept
AC3? At that program length, WAV (or more precisely uncompressed
PCM) is ta bad choice and probably just too much. Sorenson can make
AC3. In any case, even with AC3, that much video will need to be on a
dual-layer disc for decent quality (or two discs). Does Nero
recognize that this is what it should be making? Not sure if Nero can
transparently handle a dual-layer DVD.

Me. I'd export to MOV and move to a DVD Studio. ;) On Windows with
a limited budget, I'd consider TMPEG. I have not used their authoring
software but their encoder is hands-down the best value in MPEG
encoding. Has saved my but many, many times, and I have many tools.

I have had audio missing, you need to choose "programme" (muxed)
setting instead of elemental, - may not be exactly those names but
there is an option somewhere.

[Avid-L2] Re: MediaLog

Hi all,

Of course any older Xpress DV or Xpress Pro version could do the job.

But I'm pretty sure that Media Log can control devices via FW since several years - at least the PC version. I remember that the PC version suddenly had this new feature, but the Mac version not and some users complained about this..
Of course I haven't used ML sind years so I don't know if the current Mac/PC versions support FW deck control..

If anyone has success with ML & FW deck control, please keep us posted! :)
