[Avid-L2] Re: MC, Symphony, Newscutter 6.5.2 / 10.5.2 released Marker Window Updates

I'm confused. Does this mean a marker on a lower track will show up in the marker window list as being on the highest track available? I don't use a lot of markers but in the marker window it lists the track the marker is actually on, right? Maybe I'm just not getting what this is talking about.

Also what does the comment option actually do? What is meant by the saved graphic? I recently exported markers as a text file. Is this part of including a frame image when printing the marker window list? Clearly not a big part of my workflow but recently I've been using a lot of markers to point out things down the post production food chain.

Good info. It has also been suggested to me that a better grapics card or additional graphics card is more effective than a faster processor.

Re: [Avid-L2] MacPro 12 Core 2.66 vs 3.06 GHz?

I'd say it depends on whether the 3.06Ghz model has more L3 cache. The
higher the amount of cache you have, the more functions the processor can
anticipate. If it does have more cache, then it's probably worth
considering. I'd personally spend more money on fast storage... makes a
much bigger difference than a slightly faster processor.

[Avid-L2] Re: Default capture device

I think I'm that guy with 5 bins save settings and I've noticed it clear out the attic on the current edit share I'm working on. So far no problem but I should up that to a bit more just to be safe. Anybody got a good bench mark for number of saved bins? I auto save every 3 minutes as I've had some instability that makes me a bit anal about saving.

[Avid-L2] MacPro 12 Core 2.66 vs 3.06 GHz?

I know a 12 core 2.66 GHz will be fine for a symphony nitris DX but I'm curious what others think about the same model with 3.06 GHz processor.  I got my MBP with 3.06 GHz and have been pleased with it.  For an additonal $1,200 bucks is the 3.06GHz worth it?  I know Avid benifits more from processor speed than cores but will this make a noticeable difference to me in my everday life?  Or would the extra horsepower help to benefit me down the line with Resolve etc.....  Also the ATI Radion 5770 vs the 5870.  My VAR has the 5770 so I'm sure it will work for my present needs.  Curious what others think.  Santa needs to know pronto?

[Avid-L2] MC, Symphony, Newscutter 6.5.2 / 10.5.2 released

6.5.2/10.5.2 installers and updates are available on the avid.com
Download Center ( login and password required) and the Installer will be
located in the Avid Product folders and Avid Editor Patch folder within
the Product List.

Who is Eligible:

The 6.5.2/10.5.2 installers and updates are free for any customers
already on 6.5.x/10.5.x

Update Instructions:
Please make sure to download and read the Patch instructions document
located with the 6.5.2/10.5.2 Update downloads.
Besides fixing a ton of bugs, there are some new features:

Set Source Settings

The editing application allows you to select Set Source Settings for
media that is created with codecs that are not natively supported, for
example, H.264, RED. If your media was created with a codec that is
supported natively, Set Source Settings will not be available. If you
try to select Set Source Settings for a natively supported codec, you
will receive a "Selected clip cannot accept source settings"
message.

In previous releases you were able to select Set Source Settings for
ProRes QuickTime. With this release, ProRes Quicktime has been promoted
to a native codec for increased performance and the ability to
consolidate files. As a result, Set Source Settings is not available for
ProRes QuickTime at this time.

4Changes in Media Composer v6.5.2, Symphony v6.5.2, and NewsCutter
v10.5.2

Excluding Filler when Selecting Multiple Segments

With this release, you can use a modifier key to exclude filler when
selecting multiple segments.

To select segments on enabled tracks using the multiple segment
selection buttons:

1. Move the position indicator to the first or last segment you want to
select. 2. Select Tools > Command Palette, and click the Edit tab. 3. Do
one of the following:

t Click the Select Left button to select segments under the position bar
and all segments to the left.

t Click the Select Right button to select segments under the position
bar and all segments to the right.

t Click the Select In/Out button to select segments intersecting In and
Out marks if both marks are present.

If the Timeline has only an In mark or an Out mark, or no In and Out
marks, the Select In/Out button selects all segments under the position
bar.

Holding the Alt key (Windows) or Option key (Macintosh) while selecting
the Select Left, Select Right, or Select In/Out button will exclude
filler from the selection.

Sequential Files Marker Export Update

(UDevC00174545) Additional options have been added to the Settings when
Exporting as a Graphic. When you select the Sequential Files option in
the Export as Graphic setting, your Avid editing application produces a
series of still images, numbered in sequential timecode order.

When you select Markers Only, images are produced only for those frames
that contain markers.

Two additional options have been added to the Sequential Files option
when Markers Only is selected.

5

Fixed in Media Composer v6.5.2, Symphony v6.5.2, and NewsCutter v10.5.2

• Topmost Image: When this option is selected, if you have multiple
tracks, and a marker is on a lower track but is obscured by a higher
track clip, the highest available track will be used in the sequential
list over the lower track.

• Use Comments: When this option is selected, the marker comment
will be used as the name for the saved graphic.

Interplay Sphere Support on Macintosh Systems

Interplay Sphere allows you to edit media either stored locally on your
system or stored on an Interplay server back at your production facility
or broadcast station. If your Avid NewsCutter, Media Composer, or
Symphony application runs on a Windows system, you can quickly upload
your content from the field using a Wi-Fi or wireless connection and
check it in to Interplay as you work.

With this release of Media Composer and Symphony, these editing systems
on the Macintosh platform support edit and playback media that is either
local or remote on Interplay Sphere. Remote upload and remote Interplay
check-in are not currently supported on Macintosh systems. See Interplay
Sphere documentation here for more information.

Thanks so much Steve. That means a great deal coming from you. And you are very right: it is a lot of work -- more than I ever imagined! There were quite a few challenges along the way (that's practically a book in itself), but in the end I feel it's a worthwhile book with some helpful information, and an approach, not available in other books on this topic. In the end, I truly hope that it helps those that read it.

Thanks again Steve -- much appreciated.
Have a fantastic holiday break!

[Avid-L2] [PR] New Avid Media Composer Book + The Bronx Boys Still Playing at 80

RE:

1- New Avid Media Composer/Symphony Editing Book Published.
2- "The Bronx Boys Still Playing at 80" Completed with help from Terry Curran.

Hello all,

Two bits of PR all in one message for you:

[PR-1] --- I'm am pleased to share with you that the Avid Media Composer book I was asked to write for Packt Publishing is finally complete and now available through the publisher's website (and soon through other online retailers like Amazon.com).

I think it will be helpful for Avid editors at all experience levels, using all versions of Media Composer or Symphony (it was completed just before the release of v6.5). The book is the latest addition to Packt's "cookbook" series of step-by-step approach books. However, I worked very hard with the publisher to be able to include lots of background information, examples, tips, and tricks both in the chapters themselves as well as in the 3 appendices. It actually exceeded their page count limit for print, so they made one chapter downloadable for those that purchase the book.

I would also like to thank (I really can't thank them enough) Michael Phillips, Roger Shufflebottom, and Oliver Peters for technically reviewing the book while I was writing it; and there are lots of additional folks thanked at the links below.

Information about the book on my web site:
http://www.hershleder.com/avid-media-composer-book-by-benjamin-hershleder

On Facebook:
https://www.facebook.com/mediacomposerbook

[PR-2] --- I'm happy to relate that the Shapiro-West feature documentary "The Bronx Boys Still Playing at 80", which I directed and edited, was recently completed with the help of Avid-L2 guru Terence Curren at AlphaDogs in Burbank. Interest in the film has already been expressed by an Australian distributor (for those territories), and we'll see what develops in terms of broadcasts and festivals over the next year.

Thanks everyone . . .
Have a great holiday season and a healthy & prosperous new year!

Cheers,
Benjamin

When did upgrading become such a nightmare?   Day two now of trying to go from 6.0 to 6.5.   Dongle is updated to 6.0 so now 6.5 wont open.  Scouring the site to find a versioner update.  But all codes Avid sent me don't work.   Aggg!  Just spent 20 minutes on the only Avid support number that worked which was Audio support. Nice guy but transferred me to Pro video....of course....without a support contract code you cant even get through the menu.   You would think that Avid would give you someone to help with any installation issues, in the email thanking you for buying their product.   Can you tell I am a bit frustrated?

But all codes Avid sent me don't work. Aggg! Just spent 20 minutes on the only Avid support number that worked which was Audio support. Nice guy but transferred me to Pro video....of course....without a support contract code you cant even get through the menu. You would think that Avid would give you someone to help with any installation issues, in the email thanking you for buying their product. Can you tell I am a bit frustrated?
