Your idea of using a preset and 'dialing it back' is similar to my approach when using these plugins, as they're generally far too prominent at their default settings. As you mention, there's many parameters to get your head around, and you can end up chasing your tail with these as you gain experience with the controls.

If you're looking for more useful presets, you could take a look at the free preset collections on the manufacturer's websites. Sapphire has something called FX Central, which boasts that it has presets designed by some industry leading artists. Could be you'll find something more suitable for your project. Since you only have Sapphire 6, you'll need to be aware of the possible problems with some of the presets only working with newer versions, but there's collections going back to 2013, so you should find something that works for you.

[Avid-L2] Star Filter Effect Suggestions?

 

I got a request for a Star Filter Effect to liven up the lighting.  I'm using BCC 8 Glint but this is not something I generally use for subtle effect.  I have Sapphire 6 available.  This is a last minute request on a deadline so if anyone has a suggestion to mimic a Star filter effect with BCC8 or Sapphire 6 I'd appreciate suggestions.  My limited experience with star filters is on cameras where the director would say, "drop in the star filter" on a certain camera(s) for a subtle glinting on highlights.  The BCC glint seems to be doing that but of course there are a billion parameters and I started with a preset and dialed it back.

Yes, in the Audio Data selection in the Timeline hamburger menu there's a selection that says 'Allow Per Track Settings' but it down' actually seem to actually allow that — if that's the functionality that's being suggested.
