Re: [Avid-L2] Avid says F/U to Symphony owners

Here's the problem Nigel, Avid's long standing model of deliver a feature 80% done and leave it at that. The platform is rife with examples of this. And it's not just the small users this happens to. When I sat in on the "ACA Executive Board" two years ago what I heard from everyone else on that board is that they had features that Avid sold them but never finished. This was Disney, Fox, NBC, ZDF German TV, etc.

Here's a recent example, Avid gave us audio syncing to clips. Is it as good as Plural Eyes who no longer supports Avid? Nope.

In my universe, the color corrector, it will cost about 1 million dollars to completely rebuild it. But we are only talking about this as Avid never added anything to it after the initial build. At bare minimum, they should have increased the bit depth when they went 64 bit. And they should have increased the granularity of the interface when they connected the Artist Color panel so it would actually be useable. But no, it's only useable with third party software like Resolve.

Everyone here has stories of not quite finished features. There was a time, when selling new units and upgrades needed new flash bang features. But now we are in the subscription model. Avid could easily dedicate huge resources to bolstering the existing feature set. How many of you would leave because you weren't getting new features if the ones you use daily were being fixed and expanded?

But that approach takes money. And when the bucks are being drained by folks who are trying to take as much as they can before the company fails, as opposed to folks who might be willing to take less and invest in the future of the company, you get the current state of affairs.

Move from HD to 2K/4K and the rest, more audio tracks background rendering etc. DPP delivery, more files in and out DPX , LUT's colour stuff…. You could argue long overdue and more to go but I'd say there have been a lot of improvements and a much faster pace of change..

That sure seems like what's happening after recent posts of various execs seemingly high compensation while Avid customers are left with very little improvements to the core product.  Sure seems like Greed isn't all it's cracked up to be despite what sounds good in a movie line.

It's part of the "take money from the company for the execs" approach to bleed it dry and then they will move on. The sooner that happens the better. Then we can hope someone who wants to improve the product buys the company.

I'm more concerned about when Transjammer is getting an update.

That is a valid concern.  However, most of the professionals on this list are much more concerned with an update to the Plasma Wipes.  I use them on literally every show.
