I find it's always best to go via www.avid.com/AMA and then go to the relevant plugin page from there. With RED, Avid always have the latest plugin on their site. It's only Sony, Canon and Arri who keep their software to themselves.
For RED Epic support you need the 1.7 plugin and Media Composer 6 minimum.
Cheers Stuart.

They are right on the exact page you linked to: there were two links for the RED AMA plugins, one for mac and the other for PC. There is also a plugin installation guide and a white paper on the workflow. You are in the right place....

Re: [Avid-L2] RGB vs YPbPr on Nitris component output?
Your assumptions are correct John, with one exception:
outside the Avid world, there are instances where YCbCr is sampled as 4:4:4 as well.
One example is the NVidia SDI daughter card, and apps that rely on it(Assimilate Scratch, AutoDesk Smoke) will allow you to choose 422 or 444 when in matrixed color difference format(YCbCr)
The reason color systems got away for over 5 decades with half of the chrominance information is based on the human visual system model being less sensitive to color, and it was a pretty good assumption, just not good enough in some scenarios.

In playing around with a component feed PVM 20L-5 I found the component input was set different for SD vs HD. I found a menu that tells the monitor whether the input is RGB or component. That fixed my issue but got me thinking. RGB is 444 where as YUV is 422. I believe that when dealing with the Avid RGB vs YPbPr setting for the component output there is not the same difference as in the SDI world. In other words setting Avid component out to RGB or YPbPr is just a color signal difference and has nothing to do with 444 vs 422. Can someone convince me I'm right or wrong in my thought process?

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: How do I install the red ama plugin?
Qe haven't been doing much RED-originated work lately, so I'm a tiny bit out of touch with the moment-by-moment weirdness. The first thing I do whenever I have a RED job coming in is update all their software to 'this weeks build!'
Just happened to have the email open waiting for my lovely wife to dress for dinner- hope you're able to meet your deadline.

[Avid-L2] Re: How do I install the red ama plugin?
WOW Greg! You are not only extremely helpful, but fast as well.
Thanks.
I got the plug-in installed and now the symphony recognizes all the old ama clips. But now when I try to "link to ama files" for the new clips I get an error message:
"There were errors linking AMA files". Does it have anything to do with having Redcine-X open and exporting at the same time?
This is very confusing and discouraging.
Thanks for your help.

[Avid-L2] How do I install the red ama plugin?
I keep getting errors trying to link to Red AMA files and volumes. I looked in the Library > application support>Avid >AVX2 PLUGINS>AMA Plugins and there is no RED plugin listed.
I went to the downloads page:
http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/Download/en394823?retURL=%2Farticles%2Fen_US%2FUser_Guide%2Fen367201&popup=true
and I can not for the life of me find a download link button anywhere. Nor is there any reference to installing the plugin in the manual.
I upgraded to Symphony 6.x from MC 5.5.x about 4 months ago. I had initially used the red ama in the media composer to link and then transcode to Avid mxf but now need to bring in more footage.
I tried the Red website. Nada.
I'm exporting from REDCINE-X but it's painfully slow and I would much rather use the Avid ama/transcode workflow.
What am I doing wrong?

Re: [Avid-L2] Audio Quality and Sync from Cannon 5D into mc?
Yeah. I've got a Canon 5D and the audio definitely sucks no matter what. I suppose it would be a LITTLE more useable from a mixer, but I wouldn't trust it.
I also think that the lip synch is off INTERNALLY on that camera, at least on mine with my firmware version. I would guess that it's off by sometimes 3 frames. So whenever possible, I get subjects to clap their hands in front of their face each time I start recording when I'm shooting interviews with it. Then, even if you're using internally recorded audio, you can resync it. And even if they forget to clap every once in a while, you'll still know the offset for your camera. And even if you're using PluralEyes for syncing, you can still do an offset to compensate for the sync problem. I HAVEN'T ever experienced sync DRIFT though... just sync that's off by the same amount through the whole shot.
Interviews with the 5D need to be treated VERY carefully because of the narrow focus, sometimes I get footage back where the nose is in focus but not the eyes. Or the shirt is in focus, but not the face.

Re: [Avid-L2] Audio Quality and Sync from Cannon 5D into mc?
5D's input is as consumer as you can get both in design and parts. I
highly suggest using an external audio recorder. I don't know any
production that has ever used the on camera audio from Canon's DSLR as
their primary audio no matter the budget.
Regarding sync, yes this is an issue for some camera including Canon's
DSLR. The heavy processing that video goes through leads to audio being
1-3 fields ahead of video. Plural Eyes use the waveform of the embedded
audio to sync external audio. If your internal audio is off, PluralEyes
will be off also. The DVX100 was so famous for this issue that many NLE
makers, including Avid, included a feature to compensate during capture.

Re: [Avid-L2] Audio Quality and Sync from Cannon 5D into mc?
Hi again John,
I forgot to address the sync concern. I've never observed any sync issues after Canon software was modified to make 24p = 23.978. Before that, 24p on the Canon was really 24p and the Avid project was 23.978.
Best Wishes,
Paul Sulsky
