Re: [Avid-L2] baselight vs symphony

The only thing that keeps Symphony 'special' is relational CC. Would they allow AVX CC plugins to access the source metadata, then those plugins should be able to pull it off too, I reckon.

So my bet is that Avid is going to artificially limit these 3rd party CC plugins for as long as possible. In fact making the product sub-optimal for its end users, in favor of clinging on to an old business model, hoping to be able to keep selling this one metadata feature to users that need relational CC.

The more I think about it, the more I think they should kill the artifical separation between MC and Symph. Why not let stuff like CC for companies like Baselight, rather than spending Avid R&D money on inventing the wheel? Let Avid spend their time on opening up AVX so Baselight (and others) can use it to build on the MC base? Everyone would win, and the resulting product could be a killer.

Haven't spent any time on a SMac. Is it necessary to render on SMac to see a grade? Is this true for the newly redesigned smoke too?

I use the track enable/disable all the time - especially since the introduction of the tiny mute buttons.

There is also an important difference between muting and track disabling. Disabling actually stops that track being processed and improves performance slightly. If you have a nest of effects that don't play smoothly in real time, disabling the audio tracks may improve the smoothness slightly. I find this particularly useful when I have to play difficult AMA material on the timeline. Sometimes just disabling a couple of audio tracks makes the difference between stuttering and smooth play.

Also, I don't know about v6, but in version 5 you can simply hold down the ALT key (on a PC platform) and press the A1,A2 key etc to toggle the track(s) on or off. I'd hate to have this function removed. You can of course right-click on the relevant slider in the mixer and select enable/disable, but the shortcut keys are easily the fastest way I've found - even faster than hitting the mute buttons on the digidesign 002 I have connected.

Re: [Avid-L2] Today's HULLFISH TIP

Here's my offering...

I always have locators disabled, but on the occasions when I do want to add a comment when I'm parked at a point on the source monitor, I hit the locator button twice.... And you're able to add a note. Really handy, to me anyway.

Re: [Avid-L2] Today's HULLFISH TIP

We usually add our locators, sans comments. Then using the Locator Window we enter our comments and often use the Locator Window to navigate between different locators. The Locator Window is very convenient tool, but it seems that a lot of people don't think of using it.

But I believe I'm doing something similar with MC. I select "Disable Locator Popup Window" In the settings, and just bang my locator key twice if in fact I do want it to open so I can append text. Seems to work like a charm.

Thanks Steve, good to know.

This is where Final Cut is more convenient. You hit the key twice for the
comment box to open, once if you just want to leave a "marker". What a concept.

Knowing how frequently locators are used, it would be nice if AVID thought up a
similar method. It's all or nothing? Why?

If you set the marker option to 'Disable Locator popup when adding' the
MC behaviour is the same as FCP -- once to add, a second time to open.

Re: [Avid-L2] Today's HULLFISH TIP

How does this make FC more convenient? It's an option. Options are preferable to being forced to work in any specific way. I set my option to ignore it and I never think about it again. If I want, I can make a keystroke that turns it on. I very rarely use comments in locators in FCP or MC.

Controls Panel can be mapped.
You'll find it in the Timeline Fast Menu Hamburger.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Today's HULLFISH TIP

Thanks Steve, good to know.

This is where Final Cut is more convenient. You hit the key twice for the comment box to open, once if you just want to leave a "marker". What a concept.

Knowing how frequently locators are used, it would be nice if AVID thought up a similar method. It's all or nothing? Why?

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: MC V6.0 Effects Editor NOW and ode to V.4

But having the track controls panel open adds another can of worms: takes
up real estate; if you have it closed, forces additional mouse clicks to
open it as it cannot (as far as I know, be mapped to the keyboard); when it
is open, increases difficulty of determining which track panel to turn on
when looking at clips in the time line. Like the smart tool, I find the
control panel cumbersome, and not necessary. It could just have been added
to the ever expanding in size mix tool. I had to scream just to get Doug to
put the ability to map to keyboard the volume in audio track data back in
place after it was removed in the early versions of 6. More form over
function when all I want is a hammer that acts like a hammer. "Tools for
story telling". Form over function has taken a big lead here, which is
disappointing.
