Re: [Avid-L2] New title tool

The shared title thing and the location of the project storage are very problematic to me a stand alone user and the tendency to end up with title projects having the same name for a particular title page seems hard to manage.  I would imagine that and having to wait for the cache to finish it's not fun.

NB Titler Pro has its own set of issues. We have bought 30+ licenses last year and wanted to roll out NBTP as our main titling solution. It has great features that would allow us to build complex motion graphics (this is where MOGRT integration in Premiere shines). It has some missing features (likes bezier curves for animating between keyframes), but overall it has a robust feature set and an intuitive UI. We have not been able to roll it out though, because of major issues concerning stability and behaviour in our Interplay environment.

NBFX is actually pretty good at support and the stability issues (like crashing when having a title on top of an unrendered effect) have been addressed in recent updates. Starting next week, we'll have an engineer remote into our system to sort out the Interplay issues (they have no own Interplay environment) like titles changing across sequences when changing one title (which is an absolute dealbreaker of course). So I still have hope for NBTP :)

Re: [Avid-L2] New title tool

I just started a low-stress job last week without a firm deadline, but the stress of having to use Titler+ instead of the old Title Tool, which I was still using in early April before 2020 was released, is getting to me. I've watched the tutorials, but I just can't get it to work consistently. Simple things like selecting the text box and aligning it or animating it into position, which used to take seconds, is now five minutes of cursing.

There's a famous quote misattributed to Albert Einstein: "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." Well, insanity, thy name is Titler+. I do the same thing over and over; sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, and sometimes I get to perform mindful meditation by staring at a spinning beachball.

I had the choice of doing this new job in Premiere Pro or Media Composer, and now I'm regretting my choice. -- Mark Block

I don't really have an answer for you, but does the spec require a QuickTime file? Or is MXF a possibility?

Lou I agree but I have to say I'm in cabin fever mode.  My experience with Titler+ is it's just plain bad.  They have turned simple tasks into an arduous nightmare.  The vocabulary is strange and non intuitive.  All I want is a text field but there are layers and IIRC objects.  The selection process is foreign to the traditional Title Tool even though much of it looks similar it works very differently.  And when I say works I've never used it successfully so I opted to New Blue for very basic stuff.  It's astonishing but in my limited tasks I've found New Blue does a better job promoting Title Tool to New Blue than Title Tool to Titler+.  That in and of itself is astonishing.  Don't get me wrong New Blue promotion of Title Tool is not great but it gives me a fighting chance.

The biggest thing I just learned a week ago is that there is a green circle around the play button in new blue and it indicates that the title has been cached.  It can take several minutes for the cache to complete for something like a roll.  If you close new blue before the cache is complete it will continue to cache in the background but it caches slower.  This is why it took me four hours to add one line to a credit roll.  I didn't realize it was stuck caching so for 5 or more minutes I'd just get the scrub to refresh window and no amount of scrubbing would refresh it.  So I kept quiting Avid thinking it was a ram or vram issue.  New Blue reacts very slowly on my MacPro mid 2012 with 64 GB of ram and GTX-680 with 2 GB vram.  I'm wondering if a GTX-780 with 6GB vram would improve performance.  I have and expansion chassis with two Titan X GPUs but I don't think New Blue uses them.

So this is me, the guy who hates fonts and misses title tool, telling you in my small world I've found New Blue less painful for the simple things I've done.

[Avid-L2] Opening /Copying User Settings

Hi all,
So I am on my brand spanking new homemade PC (I am a mac user, but could't see spending 12+k for a new macpro when I could build something  with the same (or more ) power.

Traditionally what I have always done is make a new user for a major new version (plainly a Windows version qualifies for me ; ) and then with that user open I have always opened my old user file and copied the keyboard. Everything else I remake from scratch but the KB has evolved over the years.

It seems that when I go to Settings/Users, I only get the option to open my previous user as opposed to just opening the user panes I want (in this case KEYBOARD) and copying a keyboard into my new USER list.  It used to be a really neat trick, you'd just get a second window full of your setting s and you could copy what you wanted to. Now all I get is CREATE, IMPORT, EXPORT, and UPDATE.

I imagine this feature is still there but how do I get to it? Other wise I am going to have to do what i used to do before I discovered this trick and print out the keyboards and then hope I can find all the commands I need, which is not always easy.

Please someone tell me that feature is there somewhere and where it is?

Thanks...eli

Re: [Avid-L2] MC crashes on exit

Food for thought on the same note.
Since Avid implemented its Cloud voodoo thing, I had to modify the settings of my firewall and made sure when I install any update I do not install the Cloud voodoo app.
Before that, because Avid was looking for my cloud thing that does not exist, is was long delays starting and closing the application. Never had a crash though.
I occasionally have some short delays when closing the application but a save just before quitting solves it.
Me think there is a "merde" somewhere in the code that needs to be wiped.

Re: [Avid-L2] MC crashes on exit

I'm using v2018.12.10 on iMac with Mojave (10.14.6) and do not experience any crashes on exit at all.

So, something must be up with your system. It should not be crashing everytime you close the program.

Is your storage local connected or network?
What else is running on the system?

Re: [Avid-L2] Catalina 2020.6 Avid UME and or QT linking?

QuickTime Reference files are dead in Catalina.

Same as Source self contained Avid QuickTime files are also dead in Catalina, as QuickTime no longer supports third party codec plug ins.

You can still export as MXF OP1a but not QuickTime using The Avid codecs.

I gave up on QT Ref a few years ago. If this helps, I am running MC 2020.6 on Mac OS 10.14.6 (ie not Catalina!). I can do a same as Source export but QT Ref comes up either green or black.

From the link I see at the end QT Ref not supported but they also list "same as source" but I can't tell if that is same as source QT Ref or Same as Source in the typical Avid sense:

* AVI Import is still supported on Windows systems without QuickTime installed
* Linking for BMP is not supported without QuickTime, however Import of BMP is supported without QuickTime
* Note this is just PNG in a MOV container; PNG image files will still be supported

Please Note: Media Composer often used QuickTime to link/import files when the preferred method was not available (if the file used an unsupported format, etc.) This could mean that additional files not listed here will not link/import properly without QuickTime installed.

Re: [Avid-L2] No Java Enabled and No Tektronix Scope Applet?

Playing around with a Tektronix WVR-7100 and I can get the IP Connection to access the scope in a browser to work but I can't get it to launch the Applet.  I get error that Java is not enabled.  Googling how to enable Java I found steps for Firefox Add Ons but I don't see Java listed.  I've also found the Java is no longer supported in later versions of Chrome, Firefox and I think maybe Safari.

I read things about Java Run Time Environment or some way Java is accessed without the plug in.

I'm not in my experience zone. But I've been able to access my wfm-7020 and run the applet in the past, but maybe I haven't tried it on recent versions of browsers.  Usually I just grab screen shot and don't bother with the applet.  I'm having trouble using the panel to save presets and getting an error message and the help menu mentions you can get and save presets in the browser.  So far I see that I can get each of the 5 presets but I don't see anything on the Tektronix WV7100 Remote Interface page that says save a preset.

So is Java dead to me in firefox, chrome or safari?
