Re: (Solved... I think) -- Re: [Avid-L2] Please Help confirm: Avid MediaFiles folder on Windows 10 Internal Drive

Hello all,
Thanks to confirmation from Agustín Goya,
and a contact I have at Avid,
the following is true as of MC version 2020.4:

PC USERS:
The latest version of Media Composer will store media in C:\Users\Public\Documents\Avid Media Composer\Avid MediaFiles by default UNLESS an Avid MediaFiles folder already exists at C:\ Root Level.

In other words: if you are on a brand new system with no previous Avid MediaFiles Folder on the C:\ Drive, then Avid MC will place it at C:\Users\Public\Documents\Avid Media Composer\Avid MediaFiles

**** You _can_ still keep using the Avid MediaFiles folder at the Root Level of the system drive as you have for the last 30 years. This is a change that only came into being as of v2020.4.

MAC USERS:
On Catalina the path you must use if media is stored on the internal system drive is:  /Users/Shared/AvidMediaComposer

Cheers all!
Stay well; stay safe!
Benjamin

Are you sure that's what he was referring to? The v2020.4 What's New document states:

Avid MediaFiles Folder Location

With the release of macOS v10.15.x, you cannot write media to the root of the boot drive. Therefore, the default location for the Avid MediaFiles folder has changed with this release. You can now find the Avid MediaFiles folder in the following locations:

• (Windows) drive:\Users\Public\Documents\Avid Media Composer

• (macOS) /Users/Shared/AvidMediaComposer

If you performed an upgrade and Avid MediaFiles already exists at the root, we will continue to use that location. Also, there is no change for non-system disks. We will continue to use the root for the Avid MediaFiles directory.

When they refer to "you cannot write media to the root of the boot drive", I take that to mean that C:\Avid MediaFiles is no longer an option. So, they fixed it to trick the system into using C:\Users\Public\Documents\Avid Media Composer instead. This is bring parity between Win and Mac systems due to a limitation with Catalina and access to the MacOS boot drive.

Thanks Agustín!!
This really helps the confusion.
I'm not sure this was widely communicated.
When I have time, I'm going to make an info graphic about this.
It's confusing for us old timers!

IIRC this is true since version 2020.

Hi gang!

Mac user here, and I'm getting conflicting information about the proper
location on the INTERNAL HD of a Windows 10 system for the Avid MediaFiles folder.

I would have thought it was at the root level of the c\ drive, but I'm also getting
word that it is supposed to go in this path:
C:\Users\Public\Documents\Avid Media Composer\Avid MediaFiles

So, any experts out there able to chime in with the definitive answer?

I appreciate the help!
We're just about to create a Deep Freeze image that will be deployed to about 50 systems . . .
so I'd hate to screw it up! ;)

Thanks again!

I suspect that Ben is in an educational environment, as I am. Different rules apply and we, too, are about to set up a lab full of Windows boxes. On our Macs, the internal drive is partitioned so I'll see if our IT folk will run with that on the PCs.

(Solved... I think) -- Re: [Avid-L2] Please Help confirm: Avid MediaFiles folder on Windows 10 Internal Drive

Thanks J.B.

After my initial post I went back to see if I could improve my Google-Fu,

Media Composer v2020.4 Update New Features

  • Avid MediaFiles Folder Location
    • (Windows) drive:\Users\Public\Documents\Avid Media Composer
    • (macOS) /Users/Shared/AvidMediaComposer

  • I think this is now an _additional_ location on the internal _system_ drive for the Avid MediaFiles folder.  I was aware that there had been this change/addition on a Mac in order to contend with Catalina, but I was not aware of the change on the PC side (since I work 99% on Mac). So, I was a bit thrown.

    Thanks for your help!

    Cheers,

    Benjamin
