65% is a safer bet. Whenever I pass that just creating a title can kill the system.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: "Failed to get the same temporal offset from the AMA Plug-in"/ XDcam H

Hi Nick:

I haven't been working with XDCam material, so can't address that
detail.

The Mac I've been working on with this R3D material also has 12GB
RAM, but Avid only gets 2 GB max as I understand it, and the percentage
memory reported used can climb pretty quickly. I try to restart
whenever I notice it's gone above 80%.

Cheers,
--Michael

Thanks Greg. Will try manually re-loading plugins. Presumably I'll want to trash the old ones before I do so, or will they by automatically replaced?

Also, still a little confused on this AMA re-link/bin open issue. Presumably the bin would have to be open in order to do the re-link?

Nick.

Hey Lou -

Where I teach a couple classes (ahem: HOW ABOUT THOSE VCU RAMS?), one thing we require is our students have online portfolios. In addition to SquareSpace and Wordpress, a lot of them use Cargo Collective (http://cargocollective.com/) with good results. Just one more to check out.

Precisely. With AMA, you give up Avid's rock solid media management in exchange for FCP style ease of import. You also lose a lot of RT performance a la FCP. AMA can make things very sluggish.

Good Info! Are you saying that clients are offlining with AMA and not transcoding for a more reliable work flow? I'm shocked. ;-) Now with AMA, "Avid Media Almost", I can pretend I'm on FCP even if I'm on a PC.

Thanks Oliver, I rolled back to 10.6.6. I had an issue after I installed MC 5.5.1 where it would not load. I had to call Avid to resolve it (needed to delete some files) and they did confirm that OSX 10.6.5 was the highest version they "officially" support. Try reloading the AMA plug-ins. I had an issue when I installed and then launched MC 5.5.1 with OSX 10.6.6. According to Avid the AMA plug-ins have to be loaded manually with that config so they sent me here:

http://www.avid.com/US/products/Avid-Media-Access/plug-ins

They also did confirm that OSX 10.6.5 was the highest version they "officially" support. I was told off the record that 10.6.6 works but there might be some crashes.

[Avid-L2] Re: "Failed to get the same temporal offset from the AMA Plug-in"/ XDcam Relink?

This can be true, but not always. AMA is far from an exact science at this point. I have had projects that reopen without the AMA bins and everything works. I have also had projects where the AMA bins were closed and nothing relinked until I reconnected to the AMA files. I have also had sequences where some of the clips relinked, and some didn't until the files were reconnected.

And I have even had sequences where some of the clips refuse to ever relink and have to be recut into the timeline. As I said, it is an inexact science, and should be used with caution.
