Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Importing PSD or Tiff with alpha ... They look awful

why on earth go trough all this trouble?
A layer that has text on transparancy does not need an alpha. Just create a
PNG and you get your alpha (straight alpha) for free.
And if you have multiple layers, go to ImageReady and export all layers as
PNG in one step.

sheesh, this works fine for about 10 years now...

Many thanks to you all.
I have been playing around with loads of different combinations and I have
found this.

1. Importing psd files with layers looks like sh...t. Only useful when one
is in a hurry.

2. For the best results, I used the HDTV 1920x1080 72 dpi frame in
Photoshop, flattened each layer, created an alpha channel using the quick
mask tool and exported out each layer as a tiff or png file. In SD, the
export looked awful.

This is extremely laborious because any letter with a hole in it i.e. O,A,D,
etc has to clicked by hand.

But even after all this, the matte is still rough when you zoom into it.

I also did the same thing with illustrator thinking I would have a better
matte, but it was not perfect.

My primary problem is that on a TV monitor, it looks alright, but on a
computer screen, it looks rough as guts and now, so much is viewed on a
computer.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Importing PSD or Tiff with alpha ... They look awful

And I think that if you make sure that anti-aliasing is turned on on
the Magic Wand Tool you may get a better edge. And you haven't said
what they format is - SD or HD? I wondered if you were bringing HD
frame sizes into an SD project.

[Avid-L2] AFE+Export,+PAL+24p+MC+to+DS

Here is an idea that is not ideal but should work in a pinch. Conform
via AFE. Then do a conform via EDL. Put the EDL conform on a layer
above the AVE conform. Pull down the source footage from the AFE
conform into the EFX replacing the AFE footage. Then copy the EFX
sequence back into the EDL conformed track. The EDL conformed track
should then be correct. Hopefully you do not have a gazillion EFX
sequences.

If you decrease the Tool Tolerance to 1 or 2 pixels before you begin the
selection, it looks less rough.

Re: [Avid-L2] Error Code -2034

Not using AMA are you? At the back of my mind is the faint notion that
this might not work unless you consolidate to a different drive first.
And QT 10 does not directly support exports (I've come across this
with my students and FCP). Not sure if Avid will let you do it and
bypass QT Player though. On the FCP rigs, we have to do a special
installation of QT 7.6 so we can export from Qt Player.

The underlying frameworks are the same from QT X and QT 7. QT 7
player should be in your Utilities folder or install from 10.6 install
DVD.

FWIW that's an old, original QT code. I had a huge list back in
Austrlaia (more than a decade ago) but a google search (once I removed
the '-' character) returns this url

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Avid Keyboards

I'm reminded of the old AudioVision keyboard stickers that, over time,
would start to slide off the top of the keys, leaving behind a sticky
residue that was impossible to remove.

In the facility I used to work at, we had a company of 'specialist' IT
cleaners tout for business. So they came in on a trial basis. My boss
at the time had the idea that they'd be a crack team of IT guru's,
coming in with state-of-the-art surgical-grade cleaning equipment to
vacuum dust and debris from the innards of our Avids and office PCs.

But no, on the first day a bunch of little old ladies with frilly
aprons, armed with dusters and furniture polish took to our screens and
keyboards. And if any of those AudioVision stickers were loose
beforehand, they saw to it that they were removed completely!

[Avid-L2] AFE Export, PAL 24p MC to DS

Hi All,

A friend of mine is considering DS as a finishing system for feature film.
He is editing the film on Media Composer.

The film project in MC is a 24p PAL and the rushes are telecined at 25fps.
The project in DS is Full Aperture(2k) 24fps. Now when I import the AFE to
DS, it converts the TC rate to 24 resulting in conforming incorrect frames
of the 2K DPX scans due to the mismatch in TC.

I understand the same is possible through EDL but with having to recreate
all the effects.

Any suggestion on going through the AFE way, because if has to be only
through an EDL it is going to be difficult to convince the editor on DS.

He was infact impressed with all the other features though.

MC ver 4.0.2
DS 10.3

Thanks,
Vishal Alex

Re: [Avid-L2] MC4 - Wrong, Disappearing KN values

Thanks Job,

Exporting ALE is an excellent idea. This struck me after re-entering KN
values to all the 22x7 tapes for more than 8 times over the past 2 months.

now what i did was make a copy of the entire rushes in a separate bin. made
sure the KN values were correct and exported the ALE. this means all i have
to export is a single ALE file and if there is a missing KNs in any of the
other bins, i simply open this consolidated bin and import the ALE back in
and this sets the KN values in the other bins right too. then i select all
the duplicates and delete the master clip only.

so.. there we are with yet another workaround.

Regards,
Vishal Alex

Re: [Avid-L2] MC4 - Wrong, Disappearing KN values

Hi,

The issue of the Avid sometimes losing metadata has come up before, and I'm
fairly certain that Avid is aware and trying to find the culprit.

I'm not sure that I heard about _changed_ KN values, but I defintely heard
about lost KN, Labroll and Camroll entries.

I found that sometimes, if none of my source bins were open, the Avid would
not "see" some of that metadata for the clips in a sequence anymore. When I
would open the Media Tool, the metadata would be gone there as well. When I
subsequentely would open the source bins, the metadata would be gone there
as well.

If I do it the other way around, first open the source bin, before I would
open the Media Tool, the metadata would show up in the source bin, and also
in the Media Tool subsequently.

I have used a workaround, which is that I create a bin with ALL (sub)clips
for the project, when the metadata is correct. Then I save this bin
somewhere on the desktop, as an ALE and as an AVB. That way, I can always
bring in source (sub) clips with the right metadata whenever the sh*t hits
the fan.

[Avid-L2] MC4 - Wrong, Disappearing KN values

Hello All,

After upgrading the previous version of XPP to MC 4, Avid seems to display
KN incorrectly or totally lose it in some of the clips randomly. This
happens across the projects or sometimes when we try to re-link clips in a
project.

Initially we thought this could be because of omf media files
incompatibility so we transcoded the clips to mxf. but the same problem
seems to repeat.

I have my doubts here, is the additional metadata like KN stored in the MXF
file or part of the project file(avb)?

MC version is 4.0.2. any possible solution to this?

Thanks,
Vishal Alex

I'd suggest that the thread name migrate to QT and color levels, it's what it's really about, and it's dead on topic in today's file based workflows. Apple should be appalled at the garbage they make.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: OT: FCP and color levels ) OT:

Alright Admins, (this actually means JDS but I don't want anyone to feel
left out) it's time!

Enough is too much.

I read OT: to find the humour and only find more references to work.
Where are the hot dogs, BBQs GFIs, Turducken, puppies, dancing and other
references which make life more worth living?

Can we please have a new category? We have pr jobs FR OT and a few others.

It is time we encouraged an FCP: or [FCP] designation. Certainly FCP is
not OT: to many on this list and it would be nice when looking through
older messages to be able to filter one way or the other from the gitgo.

Pullease!

So can you still get the older G5 style keyboard with the avid key caps already installed? I don't see the unit I have on their site. Of course I'm usually search challenged.

[Avid-L2] Re: Avid Keyboards

I've got logic for both avid and fcp. The old style not the thin versions of late. White keys with characters. I seem to experience a double bounce, e.g. characters or functions happen twice when I only hit once. Both my logics exhibit this some times. Not enough to make me get rid of them but enough to make me wonder if there is a design flaw or did I just get two lemons?

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Is this a bug in MC 4.x?

This was great advice. The problem persisted after Terry's suggestion
to turn off AMA. Thought I was hosed. Adding the .avp to the
project allowed me to open.

RE: [Avid-L2] Show of support needed for Marianna

Well, I haven't signed on to the "official" forum. Marianna has been of
invaluable help to me here at the station, FAR above and beyond the
call-of-duty. Many thanks to her however here on the UNofficial AVID

Re: [Avid-L2] Show of support needed for Marianna

Posted at 3:32 PST from Kirk Arnold:
"Hi everyone,

Sorry for the delay responding, Gary and I have been traveling, and
we're looking forward to seeing a few of you tonight at the Editor's
Lounge in Burbank!

I love seeing all the passion and enthusiasm you've been sharing about
Marianna and her effect on Avid Community as a result of Adam's post
in the "Who is the DS Product Manager" thread. We couldn't agree more
about how invaluable Marianna is to our organization.

I'd like to take a moment to reassure you that although Adam has moved
from an online marketing focus to a segment and product marketing
focused role, his move in no way changes or devalues what Marianna is
already doing today.

Adam's role change is part of a broader realignment of marketing staff
based on the direction that our new SVP of Marketing Jose Lazares
wants to see. However, any changes on the marketing side would not and
should not detract from your relationship with Marianna and the many
things she does to support our customers. If anything, our goal is to
raise visibility of communities and social media among our various
subject matter experts.

Again, we couldn't be happier with Marianna's positive influence
here. Thanks again for expressing your support.

Kirk"

The underlying frameworks are the same from QT X and QT 7. QT 7
player should be in your Utilities folder or install from 10.6 install
DVD.

FWIW that's an old, original QT code. I had a huge list back in
Austrlaia (more than a decade ago) but a google search (once I removed
the '-' character) returns this url

Hi Guys -

Am running MC4 on a MacBook Pro, 10.6.3. Trying to export a Quicktime
file from an XDCam project and getting "Exception: Movie export from
procedures FAILED!, error code -2034. I tried several different codecs
with the same result.

An hour of searching hasn't lead me to this error code any place on the
web, or in the Avid or Apple KB's. Anyone have any ideas where to head
next? I did check, and Quicktime must have updated automatically,
because it's on 10.0, and should be on 7.6.

Thanks

Re: [Avid-L2] 5.1 audio monitoring via DX's HDMI?

Yeah, $900 is a bit much... I was just thinking of the future when he
decides to abandon Avid for FCP like most are doing.

Just kidding :))

If you just want to monitor 5.1/7.1 from an HDMI source, the Motu HDX-
Express HDMI seems like a better choice:
<http://www.motu.com/video-products/hd-express-hdmi/>
Still, this device is much more expensive than many home receivers,
two of which I listed previously. The Motu HDX-SDI that you suggested
retails for almost $900.
