You need to use BootCamp Assistant from the Utilities folder.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Partitioning Redux

And to add a wrinkle to this overall discussion... I got the 250G solid state drive. So f I split it into two partitions then I've got 2x125G partitions. Can anyone think of any possible capacity issues insofar as installing both FCS and MC Soft is concerned?

I took my 500 gig internal drive on my macbook pro and dragged the slider in disk utility to make it a 250 gig partition and then created a second 250 gig partition. I haven't made it a second start up drive yet. With this process I could create a third partition but how would I format it for Vista? It's been a while since I split the drive in to two partitions but I don't recall having an option to create an NTSF volume for the second partition. Am I missing something in disk utility. Basically can I take my second partition and reformat it to NTSF using disk utility.

[Avid-L2] MOJO DX setup problems

I know I can wait until monday but I have just put together a MOJO Dx
and new mac and rewired the edit bay and now Avid won't start up. My
engineer has cabled all the monitors and decks and the mojo is
connected to the right card on the mac. It worked at the vendors
office as they set it all up. The error I get is "problem connecting
to hardware. Wrong type of download was found" followed by another
window that says Exception: SETTING NO REGISTERED SETTINGS. If anyone
has any ideas I would love to hear it.

Make the partitions, then do a full system install with all the updates and apps you want. Then clone that to the other partition and do your Avid and FCS installs.

Carbon Copy Cloner is the software I use for cloning:

Hi David,

Not sure I get your question.
If you partition your internal HD, you can have multiple OS installs. So you
can have one partition with one version of OSX plus Avid and another
partition with another version of OSX plus FCP. Each OS will have its own
Utilities folder (in Finder, hit CMD-U), as well as the default OS apps like
Preview. Any other apps you install, you will need to install on either one
or both partitions.

I have my MBP divided into three partitions. One with Leopard, one Snow

[Avid-L2] Re: DX HDMI monitoring?

If you do decide to go the route of a consumer monitor -- you might want to look into AJA's Hi-5 3G. It takes accepts any HD profile via its HD-SDI in -- and it "unifies" and outputs any pSf profiles -- into progressive over HDMI. It's worked well for me.

As a footnote, I have had many conversations with Avid on this subject -- and here is a support inquiry response dated December 3rd, 2009 that sums-up the situation quite nicely:

"The Avid sends the HD SDI and HDMI signals out as Progressive Segmented Frames. Some TV/monitors can interpret this signal and display it. Unfortunately, right now, Avid does not fully support 23.976 and 24 fps through HDMI. We know of some people that have luck with these frame rates and again, it depends on what TV they have. We do have plans to add this support in a future release, but I do not have a time frame for that. From what I understand, there are some hardware and software changes needed to make this work. My advice to you is to get on the forums and ask for it. The more customers demand it, the more Avid will have to address it".

Hope that helps.

[Avid-L2] Partitioning Redux

I just want to be clear about this... To an extent, we've established that when putting both MC Soft and FCS on an MBP (or any other laptop, for that matter), it's not a bad idea to partition the hard drive and load these apps on different ones.

But what happens to all the other system files and apps on the laptop? Forgive my computer naivete but suppose I am running FCP on one partition... What about apps that may live on the other partition? Are there any performance issues associated with running these? And where are all the built-ins such as Disc Utility and Grab and Preview and all the rest?

I don't even know what I don't know. Help.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: DX HDMI monitoring?

Save yourself several trips to costco and just buy your favorite
monitor along with the blackmagic hdlink converter which handles 24p.

Convert the DX HDSDI to DVI-D, then use a simple HDMI adaptor or DVI-D
to HDMI cable to get signal to the monitor.

It's only $495. AJA make a similar box.

Prior to this solution, I tested Samsung and Sony consumer monitors
that did not support 24fps even when they said they could.

The blackmagic also has lots of color 3D luts that you may find handy.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: DX HDMI monitoring?

After looking in the MC Advanced Guide it looks like we can use the
Cross Convert settings in the Video Output settings for our edit only
systems that are not going to be doing any I/O. The two systems doing
I/O will have access to a Sony HD CRT via a router when they need it.
Which should be fine for our workflow and tasks.

Thank you for all the assistance on this so far. If there is anymore
input I would be interested in hearing it.

[Avid-L2] Re: DX HDMI monitoring?

Are you talking about the HDMI signal being RGB vs. YUV? Or is this the component in. I'm confused, so much for that New Year's resolution.

You could also opt to use the HDSDI outputs and feed it to a monitor that
handles it. As per Terry's recommendation, I went for the Panasonic
TH50-PF11 with the HDSDI option board. Only 30ms delay, which I compensate
for in my sound monitoring system.

[Avid-L2] Re: DX HDMI monitoring?

And, with the Dreamcolor, you need to have an RGB signal (not YUV) or you can't adjust anything on the monitor.

PS: Most video conversion devices don't output RGB so check first if you go this route.

[Avid-L2] Re: DX HDMI monitoring?

That's good to know. I think the dream color is a rare case for that. My understanding from the previous threads was the HDMI standard did not support Psf at least at the consumer level. Perhaps the standard has been improved or there are different versions of HDMI spec. I'm not that up on all the HDMI specs.

[Avid-L2] Re: DX HDMI monitoring?

Just to be clear - the signal over the HDMI from Avid hardware is pSf, not p - so the monitor needs to be able to support pSf or get a converter to go from pSf to p. When I use the Dreamcolor monitor over HDMI, it works fine with pSf from the Avid hardware.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: DX HDMI monitoring?

Is that similar to how the DVI out on the DNxHD card for the
Adrenaline box worked? It only matched what the project was and could
not have the frame rate converted? That's painful. I guess I'm going
to have to wait until I get one of the DX systems in and start testing
it with TVs and returning them until I find one that works right. Or
buy some sort of converter right from the start. What a drag.

Thanks for reminding me of that.

[Avid-L2] Re: DX HDMI monitoring?

Beware of the HDMI not supporting 23.98 Psf. You need a geffen or other converter to get the Psf to P so the HDMI will work. There have been a bunch of threads on this but the search isn't working very well for me. I tried Google and got a few links to some of the threads.

Re: [Avid-L2] DX HDMI monitoring?

oops

LN40B650.

It is the 40" model of the 6xx series. The one you are looking at is the
32" of the 5xx series.

7xx series = 240 hertz
6xx series = 120 hertz
5xx series = 50/60 hertz only

I disable the 120 Hz feature, so effectively I have the 5xx series.
