Re: [Avid-L2] Favorite mac encoder these days?

9.99 version is playback only.  The $119 and $499 version can fix stuff

Love the experience of editing with those Avid branded boxes - none of the "rubber" feeling you get from most 3rd party cards.

Got hold of a Mojo DX, works as well as the Nitris for monitoring and is quiet. So the Nitris is going.,,

It's not like buyers are fighting over it though.

Assuming you are making MP4's at moderate bitrates (2+Mbps), almost anything will do. MP4 codecs are highly refined. I happen to use Encoder mostly. I get slightly different results between Encoder and Compressor, but I can't see that either is better. I stopped using Sorenson when I saw that it was altering gamma significantly on my MP2s. That was a VERY long time ago and I've never gone back.
If for some reason you are making MP2's, then I'm not a fan of any of those. I use TMPEGEnc (now Video Masterworks) from Pegasys on Windows for MP2 except for DVD spec elements at 7-9Mbps. In that case, I use Compressor. If it looks bad I go to TMPEGEnc. It's actually the only thing I still use Windows for. It does a good job with MP4 as well. I never tried to install TMPEGEnc in a virtual machine on a Mac, but I considered it. I believe it would work, especially if you have an nVidia card.
I also like Handbrake if it is more convenient. I generally do this only to go from MKV (Encoder does not like) or directly from encoded disc.
By the way, the big three are all pretty crappy at deinterlacing with Encoder arguably the worst. I still struggle with deinterlacing. Oddly Handbrake is pretty good, but not at it's defaults. Fortunately I don't have to deinterlace very often. When I do, it generally requires some experimentation.

Re: [Avid-L2] Do I really need my NITRIS DX?

BMD doesn't have 5.1 over HDMI sorted out (wrong channel order). This is addressed on the Avid-branded versions of the BMD hardware (DNxIO and DNxIQ).

AJA does seem to have more robust drivers etc. So I got the T-Tap (and now have a spare BMD mini).

Like you, when the time comes, I don't think I'll replace my Nitris DX with a similar box with lots of I/O.

i disconnected my Nitris DX.  We had a Blackmagic Design UltraStudio Mini Monitor laying around.

hooked it up... works flawlessly so far.  I get output to SDI and HDMI with full format crossconvert options.

this sells on B&H for $137... why do i need anything else

Re: [Avid-L2] Favorite mac encoder these days?

Adobe Media Encoder automatically deinterlaces for progressive outputs.

Yes, it does. It's just not the greatest. After Effects is commonly considered one of the better software deinterlacers and the best of the Adobe suite. For my last project, where I had many interlaced SD source shots, I compared several paths in Adobe, including After Effects. I followed several recommended recipes, and then compared the best results (After Effects) to Handbrake with optimized settings. Handbrake gave me better results. It took about a dozen tests to find those optimized settings, but they were slightly better than After Effects. And still not as good as could be achieved.

My experience using hardware (mostly AJA Kona 3) are better, but using hardware to scale files requires round-tripping to tape, which is impractical for me.

I've also had very peculiar problems with hardware deinterlacing and scaling on input. It looks great, as long as the footage does not require further processing. But on the last project where I did this, scaling this footage a bit further (which the card can't do), resulted in a bizarre and completely unacceptable moire pattern in the footage. I have no idea why, but I had to fall back to software deinterlacing. This was depressing.

So, I'm still looking for software scaling that can rival hardware scaling. It should be possible. After all, what happens in hardware is ultimately just a software process. But...

Cheers,
            tod

It has been awhile since I last checked out the options for encoding.

I tend to export a QT Reference and then encode outside the AVID.

Assuming Mac only, any opinions on Squeeze vs Compresser vs Adobe Media
Encoder (vs Handbrake or anything else?)

Mostly I am making screeners of cuts from a 10.10.5 Mid-2014 MBP to post
for client review.

Thanks for any advice!

Dan
