Re: [Avid-L2] ArriRaw Crashes MC 2018.4 - Help!

I agree there should be an Avid friendly solution but my understanding is Avid has left the ama/link plugin development to the Camera manufacturers.  The fact that Arri has not seen fit to develop an Avid plugin is the core of the problem.

For there to not be a simple, turnkey, in-Avid, happy AMA link to all flavors of ArriRAW (with painless transcoding) is kind of a scandal. Alexas are only the most popular cameras for high-end cinematography on the planet.

As of Resolve 12.5 it handles Arri Raw my clips were 2880x1620 still 16x9 but they called it 3K or maybe 3.5K.  I had one problem clip that wouldn't show up in Resolve.  I found out from the DIT that he had the same problem with the clip but his Silver Stack software was able to process the clip.  According to the DIT the camera lost power during this clip so it didn't get wrapped properly.  Fortunately the Arri Raw Converter, available for free from the Arri site as long as you are logged in, would play the clip and I transcoded to ProRes 444 which then worked in Resolve so I had the same path as the other clips after Arri Raw.

I transcoded to Avid .mxf DNxHR HQX 10 bit but it showed up as DNxHR 444 in the Avid bin. I don't know if that is different than HQX but it worked.  I had to create a custom preset for the 2880x1620 to render out to that size.  Perhaps there is a way to just render out to the native size of the source clip in Resolve regardless of timeline settings but I don't have the experience with that.  In Resolve I set to assist using reel numbers and had the reel numbers come from the file name.  That way in Avid the Tape Name is the file name so it's easy to play along.  At first I didn't choose assist using reel numbers and choose the Resolve Avid AAF preset.  That probably could have worked but I noticed the Tape Names in Avid were something like msmmob.01, msmmob.02,  I've seen that behavior before from stuff transcoded in the field.  I guess if I imported the AAF it would work but I was just letting Avid create the media data base and dragging it into a bin.  When I saw this I then imported the AAF and then the Reel numbers changed to something more normal but not as obvious as using assist using reel numbers based on file names.

After a little research I found that initially only 3 software programs handled Arri Raw but now it's more like 12 or so.  As far as I know Avid had an Arri Raw plug in a while back and it may have worked then but it is not compatible with current Avid Media Composer.  It didn't work with 8_9_4 or later.  Not sure which versions it worked for but I think the last version for Avid was 1.5 for the ama plug in.  I wasn't going to back Rev Avid to get access.

Given the Arri 3.5K footage is less than UHD even the free version of Resolve should process this.  I have an expansion chassis at home with two Titan X GPU's and Resolve was processing about 16 frames a second.  This was with a usb 3 external drive.  I bet if I had taken the time to copy the camera original to my internal 3 way strip raid it would have cranked faster.  I did find I could play the Arri Raw in Resolve and it would stall along the way playing back from the USB 3 drive.  As a test I copied the media to the internal after I finished the transcoding and I was able to get 23.976 playback without stalling from my internal raid on my mid 2012 macpro 12 core 2.66 GHz 64 GB ram.

The problem clip transcoded to prores 444 at about 6 frames/sec.

I didn't have any footage that didn't work so I can't speak to if there are flavors of Arri Raw that just don't play nice.

There are some flavors of ARRIRAW files that are incompatible.  You can use this to transcode.

For what its worth, the same issue occurs with Adobe Premiere.   I couldn't get Resolve to deal with it either.

I think we JUST covered this in a thread here, but now it concerns me, so it's important :-)

I can't either link to, nor import/transcode ARRIRaw clips into MC 2018.4 MC crashes on any effort to deal with this stuff. So…wassup? What do I need to be able to link to and transcode 3.4K Arriraw clips (in my case, they're also anamorphic)? (Someone suggested Glue Tools, but I only see references to Phantom, and not Arriraw)

Thanks,

DD

[Avid-L2] [FR] - TC Burn-In Effect

Hello all . . .

A tweak to the TC Burn-In Effect:

When choosing to display either Src Bin Column or Seq Bin Column data
it would be helpful if the column name selections list was in Alphabetical Order.

Cheers,
Benjamin
