We get the error when we close both on windows 7 and 10.  from the research i've done, it's based on the NITRIS DX box we've got connected.  running the same software on rooms with just a KONA card do not show the same problem.  since the nitris is EOL, avid is not actively pursuing a solution.

Re: [Avid-L2] Error on Close

I still get it with DNxIO box but I also install the Nitris DX drivers because I also have an old Nitris DX.  I've seen this error for many years long before Nitris was EOL so perhaps there are multiple reasons it can happen.  I haven't had it mess up a project so it's just another little annoyance along the way of life.

For years I've been randomly getting error messages after quitting Avid.  It was a known issue years back but I never really explored it because I always close my sequence bins etc... prior to quitting.

Re: [Avid-L2] OFFLINE

Same behaviour as in MXF/XY

you can increment __bg.1 to __bg.x pending your workflow (as with MXF/xy-folders)

You're absolutely right. I just verified on my systems that the media does stay in the _bg folder. I swear I thought that it moved once it was done making it, but I guess I got it confused with the Creating folder(?)

Background

Avid-L was established in 1994 at Calvin College by Steven Koster.

It was created to be a forum for Avid users to meet, discuss, and share

information.

Avid-L quickly grew into the premiere on-line users group for

professional film and video editors. It was one of the earliest examples

of an Internet community, allowing hundreds of editors worldwide to

share their experiences and expertise with their peers. There was no

better place for a professional Avid editor to get such wealth of

informed professional advice.

At various times, individual subscribers volunteered services to the

group. Searchable archives were maintained by Germany's Berlin Users

Group as well as the UIUC. A tips & tricks list was posted by Andy

Birkhead of Innovative Edit. Wes Plate, a longtime contributor, not only

shared key techniques on his Web site, he also created a photo gallery

for members' portraits.

In 1997, several subscribers began a tradition of meeting in person at

the NAB trade show in Las Vegas. The first gatherings were organized by Jaime Fowler. In 1999,

Avid Technology itself began sponsoring these gatherings as an exclusive reception and seminar for Avid-L members only.  In 2002, this changed to the "Avid Users Group" meeting.

By 1999, Avid-L boasted over 1600 subscribers, exhibiting a true

international scope with over 300  international members. The community

included participants from a wide variety of well-known corporate

organizations in broadcasting, technical, and content creation fields,

as well as and  multiple local TV stations, colleges, and universities.

In 2000, Avid-L joined AvidProNet.com, and then, in 2002, was integrated

Into Avid.com.

In 2005 Due to problems with signal to noise ratio and abusive posters, the Avid-L2 was formed. A year later the Avid-L was discontinued by Avid.

At the middle of 2006, the L2 has around 1100 members, with plenty of "lurker only" members who simply use the web version of the list.  The L2 is spam-free, by moderation and with Groups.io’s tools and will remain that way.

In 2019,  the Group has migrated to Groups,io from the previous Yahoo engine-   the Groups.io page  maintains the complete Avid-L2 archive.    The original Avid-L archive has been lost to the history of the interwebz.

Welcome, and Enjoy!

Extras!

With a Groups.io account tied to your subscription to the Avid-L2,  you can use the web features of the Group.

Calendar  Various Avid events are in the Calender.  If you have an event you'd like posted,  pull down and fill out the Calendar event request and send it to any Moderator

Database - The database area contains Avid Feature requests,  Help Wanted,  Freelance Listings and For Sale sections.  Feel free to add your listings to any of these areas.  Job Postings will remain up for 1 month.   Please date all postings to the database areas, being pertinent is a good way to be.

Files-  The files section contains various sundry files, including the latest Avid release notes.  Check back often for changes.

Photos -  Pictures of your Avid setup are welcome, or pictures relating to a post you need a photo to explain.  Photos will be posted after moderator approval.  Who knows, your picture might grace the front page for a while.

Links-  Various helpful links, including direct links to Avid CPR releases can be found here, also the link to the archives.

Re: [Avid-L2] OFFLINE

That is not how it works on all my systems.  The media I transcode or consolidate in the background goes into the _bg.1 folder and stays there.  When I have issues I just rename it to a number but then after rebuilding the database I will restore the _bg.1 name.  In my case it lets me know where my camera original media is because the is what I consolidate/transcode in the background.  I'm working on mac systems without shared storage so perhaps in a Nexis etc... environment the behavior might be slightly different but I've never see Avid move media out of the _bg.X folder to a numbered one on its' own.

The _bg folder is where things go when you Consolidate/Transcode/Render in the background. Once they're completed, they should move from there and into a normal numerical folder. I don't think it should have any bearing on media that has existed on these drives for years prior.

Re: [Avid-L2] OFFLINE

A very sincere thank you to all who took the time to respond.

I am back online.
Parts of the media are scattered over three drives.
One drive - which I had intended as backup only,
had the Avid MediaFiles in the wrong place.

This became an issue when I had to repair the problem drive.

I moved the misplaced media folder and re-indexed all drives.

Bingo!

I don't pretend to understand it, but the drives are all playing together nicely.
Waiting to hear back from Avid to ensure this doesn't happen again!

Re: [Avid-L2] OFFLINE

I am a little fuzzy on terminology, as stated been away awhile.
Camera originals I define as those handed over
directly from the camera, before linking or importing.
I believe most of the cam files were linked, but may have done
some direct importing.  As I said, this has been strewn over years
and do not recall every procedure.

I'll screenshot the timeline and a couple bins a bit later.

When you say "camera original" you mean master clips inside of MC? or literal camera originals as in "I can see the files in their original folder structure in Finder?"

If you're talking about camera originals as master clips within MC are they Linked clips or managed media?

I think a screenshot of the bin/timeline or whatever might be helpful.

Since you've recently repaired this drive, I would check permissions.

Should have full read and write for everyone. Once you've done this, make sure you 'apply to all enclosing items' (in the little cogwheel settings) and 'OK' the confirmation that pops up. This will ripple the permission to all sub-folders.

I would create a new Avid MediaFiles folder on each drives and move the
media to it.

Support is always a good idea.

The media is spread across a couple drives, so confusion is very possible.
The project once lived on a 1TB drive.
Producer provided a large 3TB drive, to which that 1TB
was backed up.

As I had pretty much run out of space on the original drive,
I set Media Creation to another drive.

After the media went missing this weekend,
I ran Disk Utility and sure enough the new media drive
had some issues, which I then repaired.

May be reaching out to support

a new experiment.  Probably not.

2.  I had a drive go nuts
over the weekend   I repaired it,
but now no linkage.

Transcoding and Consolidating did not work.
Relinking the sequence did not work.

Right now I am feeling pretty stupid.
What's the way back?

I suspect this may be an Avid Attic solution.

Re: [Avid-L2] OFFLINE

Is all the media offline or only the sequences?

Re: [Avid-L2] OFFLINE

Hmmm.  Do the Media drives seem to have about the right amount of data
in the folders and are the file dates consistent with when you created
the media?  Assuming you're not on an Interplay/Media Central system,
there's not much that can go wrong.

Are you sure your Media drives(not just the project files) are connected?  You will see AvidMedia files folders at the root of the drives. Those folders need to be at the root level of the drive. Are you seeing your clips when you use the Media Tool in Media Composer?  If not, you can try rebuilding the media directories. Go into the numbered folders inside the MXF folder. Delete the MDB and PMR files. They will rebuild when you restart MC. JB
