Re: [Avid-L2] Legacy format / legacy quicktime / legacy headache

If you don't have success getting a good conversion of the file, you could always try opening the project in Avid.

I would:
a) copy the original Bins and media to a new drive (make sure that OMFI MediaFiles folder is at the root of the drive)
b) create a new project in Avid
c) copy one of the original Bins into your new Avid project folder

It should be evident almost immediately if the OMFI media is ok. If it is, locate the sequence you need and then export out a new file.

You might also consider consolidating the original media from the new project as it should create new MXF media files for you.

[Avid-L2] Sticky mark clip in timeline

Yesterday in 2019.11 I couldn’t clear my V1 in-out (mark clip) marks (which spanned several clips) and reset new ones in the record monitor.I believe this was happening when I had 2 sequences ganged together. Clearing any marks in the source monitor didn’t help. The workaround was to click on a different track in my record monitor timeline (A1) and mark clip, then clear the marks. That would allow me to successfully mark the clip on V1 that I wanted. Anyone else having this problem?

[Avid-L2] Audio Waveform setting

So I recently made the switch from 2018.12 to 2019.11. I mostly like the new interface, but a few things are tripping me up. Is it possible to tie waveform settings to the timeline view? This is how I've always used it, but now it seems that the waveform settings are tied to the clip. For instance, when I use my Audio workspace, I want the waveforms turned on, but when I switch to my Effects workspace, I want them turned off. I'm linking my workspace settings to my timeline settings, but not getting the results I expect. Am I missing something? Is there a simple setting to adjust this? Thanks in advance!

FOLLOWUP:

I finally got this cleared up.  For some reason, the code had to be sent to an alternate email address.  My regular email address never worked.
It's odd because my regular email address works REALLY WELL receiving all kinds of other crap . . . . . . . ;)

[Avid-L2] AE - Script Prep Question

I haven't done this in a while and I can't remember how to solve the problem -

I have a copy of the script in .pdf, and can export it as a .rtf file to maintain the formatting, but I don't seem to be able to maintain the formatting when converting to .txt.  All the margin changes for the dialog text disappear.

Can anyone clue me in to maintaining the formatting over into media composer?

I just did this too saving more than a hundred bucks for each license.  I dare say this might be the first time I renew where I won't have to bother Marianna with my lack of renewal skills.  Wait I think I already had subscription vs. perpetual messed up in my head and she straightened me out on that along with Wilson.  This HDR stuff is rotting my brain.  How can 700 mV be sooooo taxing.  ;-)

Well I went online and chatted with them and they told me they were authorised to only selll in the US.
Interesting, maybe something has changed? I’ve been doing multiple Support Renewals each year with Videoguys for at least 4 years from Australia, just get emailed the codes and apply them. Have always found them good to deal with and good price. If it’s true they are now limited to US sales it sounds a bit like cartel behaviour but what would I know? :-)

Not true, Pat, I'm in the UK and have been buying my support renewals from Videoguys for the last few years.  I just bought a new support plan through them a few weeks ago. Bought through their website, they email the code, I fill it in on Avid's website and I'm up and running again. It's literally £140 more expansive on the Avid UK website. Absolute rip offf.

Videoguys has a perpetual license support renewal deal running for $299 per support plan plus 5% off.  Not sure if the URL below will make it through.

Re: [Avid-L2] Working in HDR 2084 automatic SDR white point color management has no effect?

HLG and PQ are very different beasts.
But even so any auto conversion is going to be pants.
It's the video equivilant of AGC sound.
HLG has no metadata so is much simpler (a combination of gamma curve for the bottom of the exposure and log for the top. So easier to automate but there is no esthetic control.
HLG is ideal for transmission but also for general playback as no metadata needed. Just switch the TV to HLG.
The HLG file also works on SDR.

[Avid-L2] Working in HDR 2084 automatic SDR white point color management has no effect?

[Edited Message Follows]

In Color Management Setting page there is "Automatic HDR conversions from SDR media (Rec709"  Then there is a choice to map to 50% or 75% for HLG.  Does this mean this only works for HLG which I'm told is mainly a live broadcasting format and not common in post.  At least that's what I was told in my recent HDR class.  I'm working in smpte 2084 and it has not effect.  I don't even know how Avid would know a clip is SDR.  I played around with Source Color Space in the source settings window but no effect.  Perhaps there is no effect because I didn't choose an HLG color space?

This is all very confusing to me.

Re: [Avid-L2] VideoGuys MC subscription renewal vs support renewal?

Yes mine are all perpetuals.  That makes it clearer.  So the subscription ends at the end of the subscription.  I've been perpetual so long I forgot the new licenses don't last if not updated and now I understand the terminology better than I did before.  It's a little confusing that VideoGuys lists perpetual EDU licnenses on the same page.  I assume Academic licenses work a little different and don't adhere to the same distinction between subscription and perpetual in the real world.

Re: [Avid-L2] VideoGuys MC subscription renewal vs support renewal?

John,

Just to expand on Marianna's comment:

A "subscription renewal" gives you 1 year of Avid licenses, updated with the latest releases.  After that 1 year your Avid stops running if you stop paying.

A "support renewal" of a perpetual license gives you 1 year in which you can update with the latest releases. After that 1 year, your Avid continues to run forever with its latest-installed release, even if you stop paying.

I'm in the same boat as you. Just FYI, I'm still running MC 7.0.4 from 2014, even though I've continued to buy support for my 5 dongles.  "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

Re: [Avid-L2] Legacy format / legacy quicktime / legacy headache

Streamclip also supports DNxHD export, as I recall.
After Effects may be worth a try, I have sometimes
gotten it to open cranky files nothing else would touch.
May have better deinterlacing....?

Good luck!

The quality of the de-interlacing was not great tho, so I will need to do this in a couple of steps.

So now I get to see if JES Deinterlacer runs on this old box...

Thanks again Chip!

[Avid-L2] Old DLT transfer question

We have some old DLT tapes created by a mid-90's Avid Media Composer 100. We would like to get the media recovered if possible. The DLT is a Fujifilm DLT IV.  Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: [Avid-L2] How to set up HDR Avid Project with Panny Varicam 35 Vlog, Vgamut material?

Boy, is that ever true.
Style over substance … I wish
they would throw some of that tech money at scripts!

Background

Avid-L was established in 1994 at Calvin College by Steven Koster.

It was created to be a forum for Avid users to meet, discuss, and share

information.

Avid-L quickly grew into the premiere on-line users group for

professional film and video editors. It was one of the earliest examples

of an Internet community, allowing hundreds of editors worldwide to

share their experiences and expertise with their peers. There was no

better place for a professional Avid editor to get such wealth of

informed professional advice.

At various times, individual subscribers volunteered services to the

group. Searchable archives were maintained by Germany's Berlin Users

Group as well as the UIUC. A tips & tricks list was posted by Andy

Birkhead of Innovative Edit. Wes Plate, a longtime contributor, not only

shared key techniques on his Web site, he also created a photo gallery

for members' portraits.

In 1997, several subscribers began a tradition of meeting in person at

the NAB trade show in Las Vegas. The first gatherings were organized by Jaime Fowler. In 1999,

Avid Technology itself began sponsoring these gatherings as an exclusive reception and seminar for Avid-L members only.  In 2002, this changed to the "Avid Users Group" meeting.

By 1999, Avid-L boasted over 1600 subscribers, exhibiting a true

international scope with over 300  international members. The community

included participants from a wide variety of well-known corporate

organizations in broadcasting, technical, and content creation fields,

as well as and  multiple local TV stations, colleges, and universities.

In 2000, Avid-L joined AvidProNet.com, and then, in 2002, was integrated

Into Avid.com.

In 2005 Due to problems with signal to noise ratio and abusive posters, the Avid-L2 was formed. A year later the Avid-L was discontinued by Avid.

At the middle of 2006, the L2 has around 1100 members, with plenty of "lurker only" members who simply use the web version of the list.  The L2 is spam-free, by moderation and with Groups.io’s tools and will remain that way.

In 2019,  the Group has migrated to Groups,io from the previous Yahoo engine-   the Groups.io page  maintains the complete Avid-L2 archive.    The original Avid-L archive has been lost to the history of the interwebz.

Welcome, and Enjoy!

Re: [Avid-L2] How to set up HDR Avid Project with Panny Varicam 35 Vlog, Vgamut material?

Unless you use the nit range over 100 then your HDR won't look that different to SDR.
An HDR 800 Nit TV looks like SDR for content under 100 nits.
And yes 5.1 can be immersive but only if the content is designed to be immersive.
I have clients needing 5.1 for a head to head interview.
The issue is we aren't using these new developments to improve the story telling. We are just using them for the sake of it.
