[Avid-L2] another gotch for Resolve 9 .mxf files created by the Avid and renamed on the media drive

another gotch for Resolve 9 .mxf files created by the Avid and renamed on the media drive.

In Resolve version 9 - If the user changes the name of an Avid created .mxf file on the media drive, Resolve 9 will not be able to find or see the .mxf file in the library. Resolve 10 can see and use renamed .mxf files.

[Avid-L2] Re: Importing a Resolve Generated AAF into an Avid Bin??? Destruction of metadata???

Other issues with Resolve/Avid .mxf round trip relinking and playback that I have noticed.
*Resolve version 9 - if a single frame was imported using file import in the Avid. The first frame of the Avid .mxf file is video and the rest is blank. In the Avid and Resolve version 10 seem to be filling in the blank and playing back these .mxf files as a still frame. Resolve version 9, only the first frame will have video when played back.

*clips in the Avid with an alpha channel
*Resolve version 9 timeline can have a clip that will not link to the "Media Pool" if in the Avid that master clip's "Source" name metadata found in the "Bin Menu>Set Bin Display...>Sources" is missing a suffix in the name and the media was offline at the time the Avid created the AAF file.

Re: [Avid-L2] Importing a Resolve Generated AAF into an Avid Bin??? Destruction of metadata???

Other issues/gotchas with Resolve/Avid .mxf round trip relinking and playback that I have noticed with using .mxf round trips..
An Avid collapsed effect - the video on the lowest number track will be pulled only.
Some Avid Fast Import created .mxf files are not supported in Resolve.
I recommend to stay away from using video mixdowns.
spanned c300 files will not playback properly or render properly in Resolve v9 and the current version that I tested of version 10 - for c300 these I handle them by first prepping in the Avid by exporting a quicktime reference file naming the file the same name as the master clip's source found in "Bin Menu>Set Bin Display>Souces". I AMA these and transcode the quicktime reference file so I end up with a pretty exact file that will now link and playback in Resolve.

Re: [Avid-L2] Importing a Resolve Generated AAF into an Avid Bin??? Destruction of metadata???

This method is one of the best inventions I have come up with. It is almost tech support free. All avid media files created from master clips have a "Tape Name" embedded into the .mxf file. Avid will appear to blank "Tape Name" metadata in the Avid Bin if there is metadata populated in the "Source File" column for that master clip.

The Avid has a command called relink selected. In version 6.5 I can now take a sequence and link metadata to essence using a custom column with the relink selected command.

When Avid licenses .mxf to third parties so far I have seen "Tape Name" metadata embedded not "Source File" metadata. This "Source File" metadata appears to be in the AAF. So I stay away from importing the AAF into an Avid Bin. What I love about my workflow invention is I end up with exactly what I want.

I get to have "Tape Name" metadata linking for every master clip. This is amazing. In theory this supports multiframe rate .mxf files and Resolve can export both drop frame and non-drop timecode at the same time. What Resolve cannot do at the same time (so far as I can tell) is export both progressive and interlaced codecs. That must be done by sorting and done in 2 render passes in Resolve.

I think what he means by "supposedly" is that the problems are inherent or endemic to the hardware. When it could be a poor installation or something else.

I've had people tell me they gave up on Avid because it crashes constantly, but I go for months without crashes running the same software.

Company introduces Avid MediaCentral Platform and major product innovations at NAB 2014, uniquely addressing the strategic needs of broadcast, pro video, and pro audio

NAB (Booth #SU902) Avid® (OTC: AVID) today made several key announcements around Avid Everywhere™, the company's strategic vision for the media and entertainment industry, centered on connecting creative professionals and media organizations with their audiences in more powerful, efficient, collaborative, and profitable ways. The company introduced its new Avid MediaCentral Platform and set of modular application suites that together represent the most open, integrated, and flexible media production and distribution environment in the industry.

"The media industry is going through a period of unprecedented change and needs a leader to step forward with a clear vision for the future," stated Avid President and CEO Louis Hernandez, Jr. "Our Avid Everywhere vision uniquely solves the key issues facing the industry. By getting on the Avid MediaCentral Platform today, broadcast, video, and audio customers can strategically address both their current and future needs, with complete choice over how, when, and where they deploy and scale their solutions."

The new MediaCentral Platform is an open, extensible, and customizable foundation that enables customers to streamline their entire workflow—from media creation to distribution and monetization—with greater flexibility, choice, and security. By fostering an open approach, the MediaCentral Platform provides a standardized foundation that connects media creators and distributors together, regardless of who makes the tools they use. This fundamentally changes how media organizations and professionals operate, providing greater flexibility to choose solutions and easily customize and scale complete end-to-end workflows tailored to meet specific needs.

Building on the Avid Everywhere strategic vision, Avid has reorganized its existing hardware and software products and introduced new solutions in three suites, all built upon the MediaCentral Platform. With on-premises and cloud-enabled deployment options, as well as subscription, floating, and perpetual licensing, customers now have greater choice over how they use Avid solutions.

  • Artist Suite encompasses all of the products and tools used to create content, including digital audio workstations (DAW), music notation software, control surfaces, live sound systems, video editing solutions, and graphics creation systems.
  • Media Suite includes all of the tools and services used to manage, protect, distribute, and monetize media, including solutions for newsroom management, asset management, and multiplatform distribution. Over time, the Media Suite will expand to include metadata tagging, protection and encryption, and analytics.
  • Storage Suite refers to all of the products and tools used to capture, store, and deliver media, including online storage, nearline storage, and ingest/playout servers.

Avid is developing the MediaCentral Platform and application suites to uniquely solve the needs of broadcast, pro video, and pro audio customers by offering a comprehensive ecosystem that encompasses every aspect of the digital media value chain—from media production, collaboration, and management, to distribution, monetization, and data analysis.

Re: [Avid-L2] DPX via AMA

DPX is the file format from hell.

Made sense when it was invented in the 1990s for Hollywood effects work — where a shot might be 200 frames long. And fine for TV spots. But there are people who insist it's a good choice for film archiving — yeah, why not have 14,400 files when one will do!
