What he said about deeper, modifier key based mapping! I'm basically out of space with just the regular key and its shifted cousin. Hey, FCP does WAY better than this!

This is something you could do with QuicKeys, a macro maker. Assign A9
& A10 to buttons you don't need otherwise (SHIFT-D, SHIFT-F, or
whatever) and create a Quickeys sequence that presses these buttons
for you, one after the other. The trouble with this, in the long run,
will be that you run out of unused keys, since really only the
straight key and its SHIDT sibling are available. That's some thing
the Avid folks should work on, IMHO. In other words: make the other
modifier keys available and mappable, too.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Adobe to announce CS5 on April 12

If you look in the Help>About Photoshop you'll see it is really Vers 11.
CS4 is just to avoid confusion that the Photoshop you buy separate is
different than the Suites. The headache is upgrading. You can't upgrade just part
of a suite.

Re: [Avid-L2] Tuxera NTFS for Mac...anyone?

I use NTFS-3G, the free version, on my Leopard 10.5 Macbook. Works
great for my simple needs. I don't need the commercial version,
which is primarily about speed but has some other differences that
might matter in a larger enterprise. Read the comparison on their
site. By the way, the free version is just down farther on the
page. :)

[Avid-L2] Keyboard Snapshots

Crosspost to Avid-L2 and ACI-L

Hi all,

Checking my site visitor logs, I've been seeing more and more visitors
looking for examples of keyboard mapping.
They're visiting the "Keyboard Exchange" ( http://hershleder.com/content/keyboard-exchange-get-ideas-other-editors-mapping
) but man is it old and moldy! Even my own keyboard that I posted
dates back to v7.x . . .

If anyone would like to help me update this section, just send me
screen-grabs of your Top and Shift levels (I'll clean them up for you
in Photoshop), and if you'd like to include a brief note about the
majority of the type work you do and/or why you mapped the way you
did, that's even better. I will include your name and city (unless
you ask me not to) and further, if you'd like a link to your web site
or some other page related to you/your work, I'm of course happy to do
that.

For Mac users, here's a snapshot How To:
http://hershleder.com/content/screen-snap-shots-screen-grabs-how-take-screen-snap-shots-mac

TIA.

Have a good weekend all,

Re: [Avid-L2] "Secret" frame rate of sequences

I don't think that this setting is "secret", I think it has to do with the
"Field Motion" setting for the sequence. IIRC.

Re: [Avid-L2] MC5

&@$# the NDA!

Here's what I know:

(I ran this by the beta team for approval)

It's going to be a XXXX year for Avid at NAB!

I can tell you that Avid WILL ship version XXX, and it will be full of
XX features you definitely XXXX want to miss.

Expanding on the "open timeline" concept you'll see the ability to XX
XXXX media in any project, and output as XXXX files, X times faster than
realtime. Big news for owners of XXXX cameras.

Avid continues to listen to their customers. You can now expect to
capture and play uncompressed XXX in realtime, using any XXXX on the
market, including XXXX, XX, and XXXX.

The legendary Media composer XXXX has been completely XXXX to appeal to
a new generation of XXXX users. They'll really appreciate the ability
to edit native XXXX through the use of XXX glasses!

Cool new AVX-X plugins from XXX and XXXX will make XXXX XXXXX than
ever. Imagine never having to XXX again!

In a move that will XXXX the industry, Avid will announce a merger with
industry giant XXX XXXXXX, makers of XXXX for the XXXXX market. The 2
companies will share a booth for the first time. Frank Capria will
demonstrate the latest port of Media Composer V-X on the hot new XXXX
XXXXX device.

The title tool will still XXXX

Registered users of XXXX and competitive products will receive XXXX
upgrades to XXXXXX Version-XX through July 2010.

Re: [Avid-L2] Mapping A9-A10 To The Keyboard

I'd love to see an option to select/deselect stereo pairs

Alt/Opt clicking A1 would toggle 1& 2 together.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: MC5

1 - Terry, also check out Blip.tv as a host. They have some nice
features (bulk uploader, multi-movie player, player customization,
maybe more).

2 - MC5 . . . I know nothing specific, other than a very positive
"rumble in the jungle" that there will be smiles when the next release
comes (NAB?). For me, I'm hoping for AMA to support QT files.

Cheers gang,

Agreed. The new management at Avid have me very positive on MC - even though I prefer to edit on something else I'm happy to recommend it.

It's a great feature request now that we can monitor 16 audio tracks in

[Avid-L2] Tuxera NTFS for Mac...anyone?

Has anyone had any experience Tuxera NTFS for Mac? It's built on the
MacFUSE open source fs bridge but is the commercial product apparently more
enhanced. Downloading it now to try but thought to ask first.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: MC5

I'M excited. This is what has reinvigorated my interest in Avid
again. What has brought me back into the fold again. But most of the
places that are doing shows and hiring editors aren't upgrading. They
have stuff that works and feel like they have no need. ONly the
places that need to embrace the new shooting formats are doing this,
because it means a whole new system. Which is BY FAR cheaper than the
one they are replacing, but when faced with something that works
opposed to getting something new...

...producers can be cheap. But not all of them. I was hired by three
places that upgraded. But from Meridians...so they were LONG overdue.

At least if you made the jump to 3.0, going to 5.0 won't hurt
much...unless you are still using G5s. Ick.

Would you rather wait two years between and then get a pale upgrade like the last FCS?

Personally, this approach is keeping me far more excited about Avid's possible future. Makes it feel like they are going to keep improving the product at a strong pace.

Re: [Avid-L2] Mapping A9-A10 To The Keyboard

I apologize. I thought there were higher numbers than 9 in the command
palette.

So the answer SHOULD have been. Mapping 9 is easy and in the manual.

Mapping above that is not possible. Though I thought there was a way
to use a modifier key and a number selection, but that might have been
for something like adding a track that is not in numerical order...

Again, sorry for my hasty reply.

Above 9, use "select all" or "deselect all" tracks and mouse-select
the ones you want or don't want. Avid has 12 color tab selections,
there's no reason they couldn't add as many audio and video buttons as
are commonly used. I'd think making up to V12 selectable by keyboard
and maybe A16 would be good. Also remember that lassoing your tracks
reverses their "enabledness."

Well, you could look at recent history. Avid has been releasing a half point each half year (roughly) since the new regime really kicked in. That would mean a 4.5 coming some time soon and a 5 to follow half a year later. That's if they follow the pattern they have already set. We won't really know until NAB.

Now what I do know is that Avid will be showing all the new stuff at a special Editors' Lounge Friday May, 14th. So those of you who don't make it to NAB still have a chance to catch up.
