[Avid-L2] Quicktime Alpha and AMA

I don't think that's a big issue myself. If the QT has an alpha, chances are it's a pretty short clip and so a pretty simple import. I've not used AMA in anger myself but my understanding of the horsepower required and the dangers of going all FCP with media management, there's no harm in importing as much as you can to the safety of an MXF folder anyway.

Assuming a QT with alpha can be played via AMA then at least you can look at it, check its field dominance and whether it's correct (even pop it in the sequence to play with) before importing once you're sure. For me, not having to wait for import before looking at a file in context is as much of an advantage as playing in the timeline.
