Actually, John, I don't think all the later versions of 6.5.4 are 10.9 compatible, only the ones specifically patched for the OS version.
The download center is down right at this moment, so I cannot download the readme for the most current version of 6.5.4, but the document I quoted above specifically says that some of those patches are for specific versions of OS only. Just because you are running a newer version doesn't necessarily mean it works with 10.9.
