Yes, it's overkill, but you need to be able to listen to the tape if you're laying off to tape. (Which we still do sometimes) I couldn't justify the cost, and found one of these second hand-

It's also a bit of overkill, but has been great for us and I got it cheap. (for D to A we use an old digidesign 888/24 box - not the Avid version, has to be digidesign.)
Had the SPL, didn't like it, sent it back. (Can't remember why I hated it, though)
