Hi Mike,
I agree with your Adobe assessment. I needed to transcode an AVCHD file to H.264 for the internet. 100 minute clip transcoded in 60 minutes. I think it would have taken hours in Avid.

Id download the avid codecs and give adobe media encoder a test.
Its by far one of the best mutlithreaded apps for encoding ive come
across and ive tested a lot of transcoders in my time...
