Re: [Avid-L2] transcode speed

Apples and oranges. If you export to h264 in MC, it will use the QT encoder. Same as if you would use QT pro. Terrible, old software.

The only codecs that MC can transcode are its native codecs. That will be a lot faster than using other codecs.

When we're talking about Alexa files, these often are shot in log-C, so you would not just need a transcode, but also some LUT to get to Rec709.

Plus, you might want to maintain metadata. Not sure how FFMPG would handle that. Plus, it saves time if you transcode to Avid MXF files rather than QT, as QT would still require a fast import.

Hi Mike,

I agree with your Adobe assessment.  I needed to transcode an AVCHD file to H.264 for the internet.  100 minute clip transcoded in 60 minutes.  I think it would have taken hours in Avid.

Best Wishes,

Paul

Id download the avid codecs and give adobe media encoder a test.
Its by far one of the best mutlithreaded apps for encoding ive come
across and ive tested a lot of transcoders in my time...
