Here is the reason - we use XD-CAM for shooting. There are two ways to get that footage into Avid: You can simply play it in and record in real time, or you can 'FAM' - open a folder and drag all the files into your bin.
This second method is much faster (about 4x), but you end up with a bin full of 100 or so short clips.
For my kind of editing, I prefer to have one single, long clip that I can scrub up and down in.
