If it is a rendered file, there was an old console command that allowed you to open and edit with a precompute. If that's what you've got, then maybe you can use that to have permission to play it.
The console command is a bit tricky because the link to the file is still as a precompute so it's a little risky, but it could allow you to see and re-transcode the file to something that you could work with more safely.
Open the console (command+6 for Mac control+6 for PC) then type SUBSYS MONPANE DEBUG.
Once the console is closed again, see if that allows you to load the precompute into your monitor.
