The digidesign 888 i/o is available on Ebay under $200- often under $100. You cannot use the Avid version, and you cannot use the even older 16-bit version (although the 24 works ok if you use a 16 bit signal) because of a minor circuit difference. The beauty of the 888 24 i/o is that if you don't connect it to a computer, and provide a solid AES signal on input 1/2 on power-up, it switches into 'stand alone' AES to Analog converter mode. I actually had Behringer D-to-A converters installed, and this works much better at a much lower price point.
