Granted. My point is that there is a price point for most people. Hopefully people will list their requirements for a DAM/MAM system and we'll talk more.
IMHO, a smaller company's situation doesn't demand the enterprise-class setup, so seeing a price like that shouldn't stop them from checking out their networked products at $400 a seat plus server. However, I have to equate the trend towards DAM/MAM now with the great "shared storage" migration of the last decade:
We all want the workflow benefits without the higher prices.
Still, most small shops can get along just fine without shared storage - or they go with Facilis or maybe Flavorsys. These are suppliers that have created solutions for what many boutiques find is an acceptable price.
As long as you are using technology that is constructed as a SYSTEM for your situation (workload/ IT support needed/ constrained by price) there is a price point for most anyone.

To be clear - a turnkey CATDV Enterprise software setup for 5 workgroup
users runs around $27K. That's with install and support but NO hardware
of any kind,
The ProCache5 hardware runs $10K. Plus tapes, install and support.
There is a huge difference in pricing for individual CATDV users vs the
networked products which is pretty hard to explain to owners of small
shops.
At $40K, this system is a better fit for a SAN based corporate facility
or broadcaster. Folks like NASCAR love it. But they often need a
larger tape library also.
Anyone in the small to mid category have feelings on this subject? Do
you see a better alternative?
