[Avid-L2] Re: Lower End Reference Monitors

I've been on the JVC DT-V24L3D for a while and it's okay. Not strong in the blacks but I've grown accustom to it and really rely on my Tek scope more than my eyes, not ideal but not as bad as you might think. My JVC is slightly above eye level and I've found a slight tilt back (slightly upwards) gives me better even viewing across the screen, nothing scientific but just my perception although a Sony monitor guru said that makes some sense due to the type of LDC screen the JVC has, to be honest I forget the exact reason he give but it had to do with the LCD crystal layout I think. The horizontal off axis viewing isn't good so I stay smack in front of it to be in the sweet spot. This is problematic for screenings with producers who want to look critically at the image. Fortunately in my situation they trust my judgment most of the time and it hasn't been a big issue at my current production company. It's decent to work with and a few years back I found it far superior to Panny monitors but of late the Panny's have improved and might look a little better than the JVC these days. I don't remember the Panny monitor I used recently but it was a rental that seems to be pretty common these days.

More specifically, if your Avid monitors were 24" and were mounted very low to your working surface (say, only 3" inches above) -- and the JVC was sitting directly above your Avid monitors -- would you consider the JVC's performance to be compromised by being slightly higher than eye level? Would you feel it was necessary to "aim" the JVC at a slightly downward angle in order to achieve an on-axis orientation? Or would you prefer to put the JVC at the same elevation as your Avid monitors -- just off to the side?

If you want to donate to Red Cross quake relief, you can do so through your cell phone. Text redcross to 90999 to make a $10 donation. It will be on your next cell bill.
