Search capabilities and criteria based collections are always good to have. There's no downside there. But it seems not good if Apple decides that FCP X is like a basket that only holds so much, and in order to add something sexy like range keywording, they something less sexy but also useful, like subclips. Why can't an NLE do both?

I think that's the wrong way to look at it. This is a redesign - not a "fix".
Many of these concepts already exist in Aperture.
I'm working on a project right now in which Smart Collections would really be
nice to have.
