Symphony for offline? Decadent indeed! I agree with everything else you wrote as well. Symphony development has stalled, and it is shameful that only this very long in the tooth color set really separates it from MC. That said, I must have the color functionality, and I haven't yet found any other product that combines the flexible workflow of Symphony, allowing you to both edit and CC in the same environment. Perhaps Avid needs to face real competition in this particular space before they will be motivated to transform Symphony into the real, high end finishing tool it ought to be. FCP's Color, however powerful, doesn't constitute head to head competition, because it's workflow is so profoundly inconvenient for people who work in my situation. I can only hope that in the next few years some market development will motivate Avid to move from the place where they've been stuck for the past ten.

Me, I'm an decadent a-hole, as 99.9% off what I do on my Symphony is offline.
It's my own machine, I needed to get away from Meridien some years ago, wanted
to be able to move to HD (even HD offline), I didn't like Adrenaline, I wanted
8ch audio I/O (as I had had for years on MC) that the Nitris box featured, and I
was able to cough up the dough. I do use source based correction in my offlines,
a lot. It's great for any editing, even matching takes in offline is much nicer,
faster and cleaner (no timeline clutter) that way. I don't even see source-based
CC as solely a finishing feature.
My main point for starting the topic on the forums is that, for some years now,
Symphony development has stalled. This color correction feature, along with
Universal Online, is about the only thing that separates MC and Symphony. But
what development has taken place on Symphony since, say, v3? Nothing that was
not a feature of Media Composer too, AFAIK. At the same time, support contracts
and upgrade prices for Symphony have been up to 2.5x the price of MC. That means
Symphony owners have been paying premium after premium, without getting anything
in return.
If you add up the prices of the upgrades from 3 to 5.5, it might have been
cheaper to get a brand new license of MC, and use that alongside Symphony.
Also, when asked last year, Avid commented on the forums that they were not
abandoning Symphony, that they were committed to continuing it. But they have
nothing to show for it so far. So when they release a new version (5.5) and list
an MC-only feature (PT hardware support), that's adding insult to injury, IMHO.
So it's time Avid step forward and explain themselves. For a lot of
owners/users, Avid has run out of credit. How much longer do they need to buy
into the promised commitment?
I say either develop the product, or phase it out. Just roll those two remaining
features into the core product, Media Composer, and offer the Symphony owners
something to calm them down (difficult, I know, but still).
The whole Symphony adventure is looking like a failure. When introduced, it
outfeatured the MC9000, which was sold as their flagship product, and of which
they had claimed that it would always have all features, just before they rolled
out the original Symphony.
Or bring in some killer features. Even if I personally wouldn't use them, it
would be so much more fair to all post houses owning Symphonies.

If so, you must have some third party color solution in mind. As superannuated
as the Symphony color interface is, it's still exponentially more powerful than
that of MC, unless there's something I'm missing here. I had to CC a feature
documentary on MC only once, and I'll never consent to do that again.
